The official .mobi/ .asia/ .me/ .TV sucks thread

It seems every good thread these days gets filled with .mobi/ .asia/ .IDN/ .TV/ .us, debates. So here's a thread we can have at it! We can also refer people here if things get heated.

;)

I'll start with a neutral statement:

WTF is the point of .mobi?

To me a dead/stillborn extension is an extension either without meaningful purpose, or that has failed to win the hearts and minds of consumers (.pro being a good example).
For example .biz is widely regarded as a failure, but the paradox is that the extension is still growing (2m names registered). mobi may be growing as well, that is no guarantee of success.
Thanks for your answer to my question. I see .mobi having a clear purpose being the designated extension for mobile friendly content, and I agree with anyone who says .mobi has a long way to go as far as being widely known among the public.

Kath said:
Did a quick survey, none of my colleagues who are tech-savvy (but non-domainers) are aware of newer extensions like .mobi.
Not surprised by your results, thanks for introducing them to .mobi, perhaps you can refer them to why.mobi so they can better understand it.

Kath said:
Now I know, 'give it some more time'.
The established extensions (.com, ccTLDs) are also growing at a fast pace in the meantime, and the gap is widening. In the end we have JANE® (Just ANother Extension) :snaphappy:
How do you measure this widening gap?

The #1 question of the Fall '05 ... was "when will there be a .MOBI "default button"?!??" 2005.
Calm down and 'get your facts right, just once' please. Mobi wasn't released till May '06, so no one was asking that question 8 months prior. Except maybe you.

Jeff said:
....addressing the very real reasons and concerns[/B], please do so elsewhere where that type of immature and unprofessional behaviour is tolerated, if not encouraged, :
Now this is wrong, as 'your' unprofessional negative beratings and unsubstantiated remarks and innuendos, 'are tolerated and encouraged' here.

OMG, Jeff's carrying on about the .mobi button? Ignore was my best decision in a long time.

GF, you seem to present yourself as very knowledgeable and experienced in domaining, and of what is and isn't good or successful, whether it's an extension or domain name, and especially on .mobi. So, we can all just take it that since .mobi wasn't released or 'born' until May of 2006, 'your berating sig' notation of 'Born 2005' just...confirms that knowledge and experience you bring to this discussion.

Always nice to hear from the nose bleed section.

"July 2005- ICANN approves .mobi contract; dotMobi (mTLD) appointed as global registry for .mobi"

Instead of attacking me personally, why don't you please stick to the facts?

Again, this is comparing the searching for the terms '.com' and '.mobi' correct?

So..., I guess your analogy to being 'born' is the day of 'conception', not the day you came into the world. The rest of the world counts the actual first day of life. The first .mobi names were not assigned or pre-regged until May of '06, or 'their first days of availablity.'

(I don't need to bold it, most people know this.)

I'd say you guys are splitting hairs on this one, it could be interpreted either way. 'Conception' could be viewed as far back as I think 2000 when some good people at Nokia first started the whole mobile tld concept.

Please address the concerns professionally!

^ Correct, I was ... and perhaps still am ... ahead of the curve in the discussions of the "dot Mobey" (which was approved, by the way, in 2005, and - if you search the historical threads - also discussed here at that time, as well)! :gl:

The aforementioned request for a real discussion of the reasons and questions and concerns are again instead countered with the following immaturity, as has been the case and as had been predicted: :guilty:

'your' unprofessional negative beratings and unsubstantiated remarks and innuendos, 'are tolerated and encouraged' here.

OMG, Jeff's carrying on about the .mobi button? Ignore was my best decision in a long time.

I'll be on vacation for the long 4th weekend, but if ANYONE - any one at all - with a leaning toward the "dot Mobey" would like to professionally discuss and address the aforementioned chronological reasons and questions and concerns, please post here in an open & friendly, professional manner ... and I hope we can finally have that insightful discussion here for the membership and #1 Community, IMHO. :talk:
Thank you.

Sam, please don't call me a fool, I'm trying to better understand the nuances of google analytics. Are you saying by entering .com as a parameter it will also count any search for abc.com?

I would appreciate even ONE post/poster of substance ... who can clearly and intelligently address the myriad of "dot Mobey" questions and concerns without personally attacking the questionner and posting drivel subterfuge ad nauseum, IMHO.

Yes, I've been trying to say that for a while... didn't really think you don't know what * means.

Let's take your example of ESPN.mobi - http://espn.go.com/mobileespn/products?productId=3059185

"by entering this link into your BlackBerry® browser:
http://espn.mobi/bblauncher"

or http://www.rainierpac.com/content.asp?chapterID=46&subchapterID=52&pageID=159&SubpageID=427

"Q. What is the address to access the Mobile Locator with my mobile device?
A. http://www.rainierpacificbank.mobi"

Plus all the other "enter this .mobi address into your cell phone's web browser" (e.g. BofA.mobi).

Time is money! Especially when people are browsing the mobile web. There is no time to second guess like on the PC.

The vast majority of people will be using the mobile web for the first time.

Sure, they may have a play around with Google (if they are rich and have a lot of time on their hands) but more likely users will be navigating directly (type-in) to e.g. ESPN.mobi, CampRock.mobi, Nokia.mobi, whatever ad they see.

Things that will be searched for are "mobile Internet" http://www.google.com/trends?q=mobile+internet which as you can see appears to becomming a rather popular subject.

When users are more familiar with the mobile web and the prices for browsing are cheaper then I'm sure there will be a lot more use of the search engines.

I highly HIGHLY doubt any one will have the patience to type such a long and precise URL :yell: . They will search like most lazy surfers, if its a type in, it must be a .com, so really .com is "hurt" in this *.com vs *.mobi google trends.

Well enjoy yourself. We'll probably just have normal rational conversations while you're gone, but we'll try to enjoy them. Don't forget to leave off the suntan lotion, and fall into a nice long deep sleep as you lie in the sun. Hope the UV levels are high there this weekend.

Enjoy, and 'may you always be looking upward, as birds fly above!'

This is great you are developing your .mobi, but as said before, non .mobi domainers, not a single one in the top SERPs.

Btw, how in the world are you in the top for those names... what is the SEARCH TRAFFIC from these, or are these just low searched terms.
Low searched terms? Do you really believe that?

Just switch to an EXOTIC cctld and plaster it with ads = $$$, instead of wasted opportunity with crappy "admob" ads :yell: :yell:
How would that help the rest of my mobi portfolio? The admob ads are "something is better than nothing" at this point. Again...another point towards the "it's different" than typical domains. Monetizing a mobile site is quite different that monetizing a full site. Just another reason typical domainers can't "see" mobi making it. The "If you can't park it...it's a failure" mentality is for the weak. You have to think out of the box. There are other ways to make money than admob ads, but you have to take the time to be creative. My ways are still under wraps. Just quietly building traffic now and watching it grow every month.

If that is the case I think the the analytics will forever be skewed as there are so many people in the habit of using a search bar as a URL bar. I see so many people doing that, I ask why they don't use the address bar and they sort of shrug and say this works. I will be surprised if this same user dynamic carries over to mobile web, time will tell. Ultimately though I have even less confidence now in those analytics. Thanks for better explaining them.

It was a compliment my friend. :) . I envy anyone who can get into the top 10 for yahoo. I was saying as a top 10 in yahoo, makes much more sense to monetize it now and get great $$$.

I believe it has to be a low search term or your SEO is god cause I don't even see backlinks to your site (looks like a stand alone).
