The official .mobi/ .asia/ .me/ .TV sucks thread

It seems every good thread these days gets filled with .mobi/ .asia/ .IDN/ .TV/ .us, debates. So here's a thread we can have at it! We can also refer people here if things get heated.

;)

I'll start with a neutral statement:

WTF is the point of .mobi?

I believe it counts ANY search on google albiet a pc or mobile, need to check up on it though. Google search is widely available on the mobile version of its site, albiet its google.com. Thus, there is no data bias. People who surf via their phone start off at google.com if they do the same on their pc.
Just so I understand, if someone searches about date rape on google's mobile search and then clicks on DateRape.mobi, what impact would that have on google analytics in terms of .mobi?

None, but i HIGHLY doubt with the lack of developed and INDEPENDENT .mobis on any SERP placement, this is not only highly unlikely, probably doesn't exist.

OK, thanks for clarifying, so you are only basing your point on people doing a search for "mobi" on google.

To me personally any tld with no traffic or traffic GROWTH is dead

DateRape.mobi ranks in the top ten for 'Date Rape' in Google mobile search. Many more out there as well. This .mobi site is getting traffic and ranking well in google, by your own measure doesn't that make it a success?

To all mobi bashers who say .mobi is dead, RIP etc.. can you please explain what you mean when you say an extension is dead?
To me a dead/stillborn extension is an extension either without meaningful purpose, or that has failed to win the hearts and minds of consumers (.pro being a good example).
For example .biz is widely regarded as a failure, but the paradox is that the extension is still growing (2m names registered). mobi may be growing as well, that is no guarantee of success.
Did a quick survey, none of my colleagues who are tech-savvy (but non-domainers) are aware of newer extensions like .mobi.

Now I know, 'give it some more time'.
The established extensions (.com, ccTLDs) are also growing at a fast pace in the meantime, and the gap is widening. In the end we have JANEยฎ (Just ANother Extension) :snaphappy:

No one uses quotes. Only techies or domainers looking to see what keywords are nice:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Date+Rape

I dont see a .mobi

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q="Date+Rape"

With quotes, I don't see a .mobi... has your google been .mobified with the amount of .mobi searches you do

EDit: hmm, looks like mobile google is different then regular google??? IS that possible?? My iphone doesnt show a .mobi either.
Last time I looked, not everyone uses Google. Check "date rape" in Yahoo. Might also want to search for "evacuations" or "FBI Most Wanted" and let us know if a mobi shows up. And no....don't use the quotations...

I'm working on getting better placement in Google, but for now, I'm happy with Yahoo

Kath has always been an experienced, informed and insightful, and balanced poster here on our beloved #1 Namepros ... a true professional in every sense of the word, IMHO. :music: :hearts:

IOHO's, for the volumes of reasons and explanations that I and others have been raising here (including this thread!) for some time, Paul. We can go over these, again, one by one if you'd like ... but it's been glaringly clear that NO ONE - not one single soul - from the "dot Mobey" camp truly wishes to adequately address and discuss (in an intelligent, forthright, balanced, and professional manner) these reasons and concerns that have lead to its certain demise, IMHO. :guilty:

Chronologically, if you wish, we can begin with mTLD's bumbling and fumbling ... specifically with regard to the abandoning of the RFP process and further NON developments from the failure to enforce the firm development mandates from the auctioned domains! 1,000's upon 1,000's of "reserved" domains still, to this day, languish at mTLD control and ownership while the much larger and unrestricted Mobile Webโ„ข rapidly expands and evolves ... which is evidenced by advances in mobile devices (based, in part, from users' and buyers' wishes for an UNRESTRICTED and FULL web experience while "on the go"), browsers, and auto detection capabilities and capacities, IMHO. :gl:

The #1 question of the Fall '05 ... was "when will there be a .MOBI "default button"?!??" 2005. :|
The question of Spring '06 was, "specifically, how will mTLD promote the extension?!?"
What happened to the developed, stand-alone, "ecosystem"?!? Where is the critical public awareness for the "dot Mobey"?!? :red:

Thanks for any insight ... and if you should feel the urgent need to post more unsubstantiated hype (a la Arnie), spam drivel (a la Bocavision) and personal attacks (a la Mjnels and Hawkeye) rather than actually addressing the very real reasons and concerns, please do so elsewhere where that type of immature and unprofessional behaviour is tolerated, if not encouraged, IMHO.

Best regards.
-Jeff B-)

This is great you are developing your .mobi, but as said before, non .mobi domainers, not a single one in the top SERPs.

Btw, how in the world are you in the top for those names... what is the SEARCH TRAFFIC from these, or are these just low searched terms. Just switch to an EXOTIC cctld and plaster it with ads = $$$, instead of wasted opportunity with crappy "admob" ads :yell: :yell:

Thanks for your answer to my question. I see .mobi having a clear purpose being the designated extension for mobile friendly content, and I agree with anyone who says .mobi has a long way to go as far as being widely known among the public.

Not surprised by your results, thanks for introducing them to .mobi, perhaps you can refer them to why.mobi so they can better understand it.

How do you measure this widening gap?

Calm down and 'get your facts right, just once' please. Mobi wasn't released till May '06, so no one was asking that question 8 months prior. Except maybe you.

Now this is wrong, as 'your' unprofessional negative beratings and unsubstantiated remarks and innuendos, 'are tolerated and encouraged' here.

OMG, Jeff's carrying on about the .mobi button? Ignore was my best decision in a long time.

GF, you seem to present yourself as very knowledgeable and experienced in domaining, and of what is and isn't good or successful, whether it's an extension or domain name, and especially on .mobi. So, we can all just take it that since .mobi wasn't released or 'born' until May of 2006, 'your berating sig' notation of 'Born 2005' just...confirms that knowledge and experience you bring to this discussion.

Always nice to hear from the nose bleed section.

"July 2005- ICANN approves .mobi contract; dotMobi (mTLD) appointed as global registry for .mobi"

Instead of attacking me personally, why don't you please stick to the facts?

So..., I guess your analogy to being 'born' is the day of 'conception', not the day you came into the world. The rest of the world counts the actual first day of life. The first .mobi names were not assigned or pre-regged until May of '06, or 'their first days of availablity.'

(I don't need to bold it, most people know this.)

I tried to enter it with * and it is rejected, what are you trying to say?

I'd say you guys are splitting hairs on this one, it could be interpreted either way. 'Conception' could be viewed as far back as I think 2000 when some good people at Nokia first started the whole mobile tld concept.
