The official .mobi/ .asia/ .me/ .TV sucks thread

It seems every good thread these days gets filled with .mobi/ .asia/ .IDN/ .TV/ .us, debates. So here's a thread we can have at it! We can also refer people here if things get heated.

;)

I'll start with a neutral statement:

WTF is the point of .mobi?

Why the qualification?

a ccTLD is actually a plus for an international company ... it

indicates it will taylor itself to local differences and aims to be closer to

its customers ... also keep in mind American Airlines get ALOT of people

checking their flights etc on mobile and they found no need to use

anything but AA.com

So what need is there to use a ccTLD?

So you contend that companies need to use their brand ccTLDs?

So you contend that American companies should advertise to their Russian

customers in English ?

Is it necessary to use .ru to publish Russian content?

Because demand dictates it. You are a fool if your a company in Germany and everyone uses .de and you don't bother registering your .de domain name. Plain and simple. And .mobi has no demand. Common sense applies.

Just like why should a profit register its .com counterpart even though its meant for "commercial enterprises". Cause demand dictates it.

Case closed.

It is not necessary, you could publish Russian content on .nl (Netherlands country code extension) if you wished. Although this is highly unlikely to work out well for the Russian website

It is just Russians are familiar with seeing their local businesses in Russia advertised on the local .ru extension so it would make sense, until the superior Russian idn.idn (international character set domain) extensions are released. But I am guessing you already new all that anyhow, but just clearing it up for any newbies who may come past

So using this logic, a company that wants to deliver mobile content and uses their "brand".mobi to accomplish it is a foolish company?

read argument above more carefully please... this counter has nothing to do with my previous logic

theres no demand.
If consumers were demanding to use .mobi then of course the company's will follow. But of course, as 400,000 people in luxembourg will tell you, there's no demand.

Other alternatives are to use "brand".com/ru or ru."brand".com or you could use geolocation technology and deliver Russian language content to anyone who visits "brand".com from an IP located in Russia. .ru is not the only 'logical' approach.

If there is no demand then why are some companies using .mobi?

(Not sure what Luxembourg has to do with it. :? )

So I suppose as soon as .de was released everyone automatically knew what it was and it was immediately in demand?

Why can't companies just use de.domain.com?

Common sense tells me .mobi hasn't even been around for 2 years and the mobile internet http://www.google.com/trends?q=mobile+internet
has only just started to take off.

Sigh all your .mobiers keep pointing out launch to end user adaption.

LETS SEE:

Introduced in... 1986. Well no shit no traffic then. It doesn't take a genius to realize most developed cctlds today were established right from the get go. :alien:

The internet grew in Germany just as it grew in THE US. Except in the US which was .COM.

This AIN'T 1986. Your not going to see a new BOOM of user adoption.

Look at .info, .biz, .eu, .asia for your more valid comparisons.

http://www.google.com/trends?q=.info,+.de,+.biz,+.mobi,+.eu,+.asia&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0

No growth. No boom. Failure.

All failures.

Nothing, will ever supplant the 1990's internet boom. Its been ingrained in every internet user's mind.

Common sense applies.

Why are companies using .mobi? Cause it costs $8 or less to redirect a name to its mobile version. Why does google register google.** even its a random exotic TLD? Cause it costs nothing. Why not?

Now BRANDING IT is something totally different.

So what's going on when they advertise their "brand".mobi?

There are no advertisements. I have yet to see one .mobi advertisement in mainstream. It will take 100's of advertisements before any of your speculative domains to raise a single penny.

Show me one advertisement for .mobi ill show you 100 for developed cctld.

BOFA.mobi (the only mainstream ad yet) alone is not going to make your twokeyword.mobis higher in value.

I was referring to Luxembourg because apparently DEMAND for .LU (pop. 400,000) is equal or HIGHER then .mobi (population 3 billion) (I assume most ".mobi" searches on google are done by speculators).

http://www.google.com/trends?q=.mobi,+.lu&ctab=0&geo=all&date=ytd&sort=0

To put it in persepctive: Highest offer for cars.lu - $500. If there was no speculation among resellers, highest offer for cars.mobi should be $500 based off demand.

Of course people "speculate in the future" at their own peril :alien: :alien:

I've seen online ads for disney.mobi, others have seen traditional marketing for zagat.mobi, there are billboards in Puerto Rico for a .mobi start up, fox news has promoted their mobi, ESPN promotes their .mobi, Smirnoff is promoting their .mobi, there are more promotions from Europe I've heard of, all kinds of companies, many as simple as being the designated mobile website promoted on their main PC site, and some traditional advertising. I have heard from a Nokia employee that nokia.mobi often gets more traffic now as compared to nokia.com plus they are pushing forward with additional .mobi websites, which is to be expected I guess since they are ultimately the true founder of the .mobi concept originally.

I understand you have no interest in .mobi but unfortunately your disinterest is leading to false information about the realities of the expansion of .mobi.

I rest my case. All you need to do is look at google trends in another 2 years. Will not have changed at all.
