Hello Everybody,

During the weekend I made a research on "COM.AI" extension. If you have time I would like to share my experience & thoughts as follows:

1) Why I did this research?

Because ".COM" and ".AI" (separately) are the star extensions of the domainers, however according to Namebio "COM.AI" (together) is not.

"COM.AI" registration is unrestricted and open to anyone worldwide like "COM" and ".AI", however 5 most expensive sales of the history of "COM.AI" are as follows:

x.com.ai (205$ @2021.08.02)
1.com.ai (140$ @2023.09.04)
sex.com.ai (140$ @2023.06.05)
xiaomi.com.ai (120$ @2022.02.08)
b.com.ai (120$ @2021.05.03)
(Source: Namebio)

There has to be a reason for these record-breaking low prices.
We immediately can interpret that "COM.AI" is not a good extension.

The reason can be its SLD?
To understand this, let's compare another SLD for which there is no problem: "COM.AU"
There are several 6 fig sales of "COM.AU" up to 280.000 USD;

Money.com.au (280,000$ @2019-06-27)
Investmentproperty.com.au (127,000$ @2011-09-28)
Pay.com.au (117,000$ @2019-07-07)
Cruises.com.au (103,000$ @2013-10-16)
Fetch.com.au (100,000$ @2017-04-02)
Deals.com.au (100,000$ @2011-04-28)
Poker.com.au (100,000$ @2011-01-12)
(Source: Namebio)

So in this example we see that an SLD can very well sell at 6 fig price levels.

This means that the reason why domain investors and end users don't (or let's say dit not until now) prefer "COM.AI" has to be somewhere else.

2) Where is the problem:

First of all, from where people can buy this extension?
Registrars like Godaddy, Dynadot, Namecheap, Namesilo, Network Solutions, Spaceship, Name com, Domain com, Squarespace, that most people use, do not sell "COM.AI", this extension is either "unsupported", or "not valid".
Of course if people cannot buy, there cannot be a market (and awareness) for this extension.
This may explain why historical prices are so low.

Secondly, do we have enough platforms where we can sell this extension?
I found that from Porkbun I can register this extension and I hand-registered 10 dictionary words, then immediately I tried to list them.
-Godaddy Auctions did not accept, because when you begin writing "com.a" Godaddy shows "com.ag" and "com.au" but not "com.ai"; "com.ai" is not existing.
-DAN accepted, but Afternic did not accept.
-Sedo accepted.
-Atom didnot yet accept.
-DNWE didnot yet accept.
Even ExpiredDomains net doesn't show this extension.

As a result, my experience shows that the problem of this extension (with possible good potential) comes from the lack of awareness.

I mean, if (1) some pioneering domain traders/investors/brokers/media invest now, and (2) if more registrars sell & more markets list this extension; more potential buyers will be aware; then the visibility will increase, together with the value.

So what is your opinion?

You can't really compare .com.ai, which nobody needs or asked for, to .com.au, which has been the main .au extension for years, in fact still is (.au entered general availability in 2022 but even now it's not the first choice, similar to .co.uk vs .uk).

Don't waste your money would be my opinion. Plenty of established investors know they exist and are not buying and certainly not buying in the secondary market.

.Com.ai is a pretty ugly derivative from .ai. But honestly, I just heard about it for the first time 5 min ago, after reading the OP's thread.

the problem of this extension .... comes from the

.... fact :

when registry is not the registry .... the company is not obliged (ToS)

x.com.ai (205$ @2021.08.02)

When did X become available, for (COM.AI) or (.AI)? X is reserved.

I passed on the opportunity to purchase 1.com.ai and b.com.ai (cherry picked single numbers and letters). The (TLD not supported) on Afternic and GD doesn't prevent you from purchasing a (COM.AI). During the months of Jan and Feb various single letters and numbers were available in (COM.AI). All are now taken. The bottom line is the average domain investor will not spend the money for a COM.AI or .AI.

Very few free online appraisal sites recognize ccTLD's period. The lack of registrars that offer COM.AI isn't a factor when it comes to evaluating COM.AI.

I use several different registrars for specific reasons. Domain.com offers (.ZA) at a fair price. Porkbun offers several ccTLD's I'm vested in. Sedo accepts all my various ccTLD's I'm vested in.

Essentially you let the cat out the bag. You could have milked COM.AI. The fact that you registered 10 dictionary words, but you're low key dissuading other potential investors from buying is disingenuous.

I know what kind of numbers COM.AI generates.

humbleworth.com
furm.com
dynadot.com
qeip.com
symbolics.com
godaddy.com
namechk.com
estibot.com
domainindex.com

On any given day I can look at DNjournal, Domainnamewire, ect and see several gTLD's and random ccTLD's sell for no less than four figures.

I anticipate a gold rush to purchase the remaining short dictionary words.

COM = Bitcoin
AI = Ethereum
COM.AI = BCH

I guess the investors that registered .health, .club, .vip, .casino, .miami, .biz wasted their money too???

If you had read this thread carefully, you'd know and see what the extension is that he noted to be a waste of money. He's referring to the op's posted .sld.tld, not a straightforward .tld.

Are any of them .com.ai?

This topic is not new gtld sales, it's com.ai specifically.

Not yet. It's not as popular as .AI .
Every extension will not be on a domainer's radar.
Purchasing SEDO's showcase domains will definitely increase awareness.

I wasn't trying to make a direct comparison, I was trying to show every extension has some inherent value.
