With thousands of startups needing a name for their new company and many more existing businesses also branching out all the time and needing names for their new line of products and services it seems that brandable domains is one of the areas that could be very beneficial to domainers both old and new and deserves to be explored further.

Below are a few points of discussion to get this thread started, if I have left something important out please let me know so that it can be added to them. If you have any tips or advice about brandable domains please feel free to share them with the rest of us.

1-What is a brandable domain.

2-How many different types of brandable domains are there and is one type better than the others.

3-What makes a brandable domain stand out amongst thousands of others.

4-What is the optimum length for a brandable domain, how long can a brandable domain be and still qualify as being a good choice.

5-What types of brandable domains are most desired by startups and existing businesses.

6-What is the best way to find brandable domains.

7-What is the best way to sell brandable domains.

Attention Newbies: It's probably best to first hear what some of the more experienced domainers have to say about this subject before you consider getting any domains, and even then it's probably best to experiment with just a few domains at a time. You should be able to sell one domain and then use the proceeds from that sale to get more domains, if you cannot even sell one domain then you are doing something wrong and need to adjust your strategy. IMO

I listened to this yesterday and the speaker had some interesting points.

Although I think "Network Solutions" is a great name!

Interesting that there are company's like hers, developing brands etc. I would love to have a company like this. Although you would need solid connections to get contracts I'm assuming.

I did too, and she is very talented + creative.
She revealed a S.M.I.L.E. strategy for choosing good brandable names:
S - suggestive
M - meaningful
I - imagery
L - legs
E - emotion
She also gaves a S.C.R.A.T.C.H. strategy for deciding which names to scratch from your list.
Domainers can stop wasting $ by utilizing SCRATCH.
Go and listen, you will be glad you did.

Yes but I did notice she pushed her own agenda a bit.

Not sure about Forcery... :)

All in all a good presentation.

Yeah, we r all pushing our agendas.
You're right about Forcery, it's not a great business name.
She also advised me to create my brand by using my last name in a pun. :td:
I don't agree with everything she says, but most folks in here (including me) can learn a lot about naming from her.

Just watched the whole thing, thanks for posting the link. It was very illuminating. :guilty:

It made me feel a bit like like we are going about it bass ackwards, but it explains why the simple 2 word, or play-on-a-common-phrase type name's popularity, over the truly madeupables. It gives a more traditional marketing and ad agency type of view to it, IMO.

It looks like you have to be very clever as a brandable domainer, as it is made harder by the fact you don't know a company's vision ahead of time. So you have to come up a story/idea/name so good, that a company will want to claim it for their own, along with the domain. Very similar to what Rader said in one of his posts.

I just got a couple of books from Ebay. "The Brand Gap" and "Zag" by Marty Neumier. They just got here so I haven't read them yet, and the second page he says "a brand is a person's gut feeling about a product, service or company". So it's not just the letters, it's the meaning/feeling. Though you need all the letters too, when possible, unless it's a blend of two strong words. I think I need to go back through the sold brandable domains and see if they have that. And check against the smile and scratch check lists too. :D

Lets hope your last name isn't Keihanaikukauakahihuliheekahaunaele. :)

My new brandable is Kwiglo dot com .

I figured there shouldn't be a similar name as TheMillionDollarDomainName "Quiglo" :D
