After years, even decades of leveraging parking options, many of us find ourselves back at the starting line with all the changes in parking policies, payouts, structure, etc. over the years. There's also those of us that haven't used parking that much in the last decade or so and need a refresh on what to look for and how to test what we find.

That's what this guide is for, a refresher for those of us that are looking for something more up to date than our old notes from back in the day, when parking was as easy as 1-2-3.

Let's dive right in...

Domain parking can be a smart way to generate passive income from domains that aren’t being actively used. However, the key to success lies in choosing the right types of domains and then methodically testing their performance.

Best Types of Domain Names for Parking Revenue

  1. Keyword-Rich Domains Domains that incorporate high-volume search keywords naturally attract organic type-in traffic. By aligning closely with common search terms, these domains often display highly relevant ads, which can increase the likelihood of visitor engagement and clicks. This type of domain works well with ad placements that target specific industries or topics.
  2. Short & Brandable Domains These domains are memorable and easy to type directly into the browser. Their simplicity helps build direct visitor traffic, a quality that can lead to better ad performance. A strong, brandable domain can also open up opportunities for a longer-term brand identity or for resale at a premium, which adds another revenue layer.
  3. Expired or Authority Domains Domains that have been previously used often retain residual SEO value, thanks to established backlinks and previous traffic figures. Such domains can continue generating organic visits even after being parked, creating a steady stream of ad impressions and clicks. However, it’s essential to check for any legacy issues or penalties that might affect their performance.
  4. Geo-Specific and Niche Domains Domains that directly reference a location or serve a niche market (like a specific industry) tend to attract a concentrated group of visitors looking for localized or specialized information. The focused audience makes the displayed ads more relevant, which can elevate click-through rates (CTR) and revenue per click.
  5. Misspelled Variants Capturing accidental or typo traffic can be lucrative if done correctly. These domains benefit from visitors who inadvertently type in the wrong address of a popular domain. However, caution is warranted here because of potential trademark or legal issues, ensuring these domains don’t infringe on existing brands is crucial.

Important Note: It's important to check all the backlinks from a domain prior to acquisition. It has become way too common for blackhat backlink campaigning to be implemented to try and boost the value of a domain artificially. None of those bad neighbor backlinks are going to help with your parking endeavors. Domains with heavy evidence of backlinks coming from bookmark sites, directories, forum signatures, blog comments, review sites, link-lists, parked pages, landing pages, domain portfolio pages, etc. should be skipped over to save you the registration/acquisition costs and headaches.

There are a ton of sites for checking backlinks and SEO/SEM, here's a few I like to use:

How to Test Parked Domains for Revenue

  1. Set Up with a Reputable Parking Provider Start by parking your domains with established providers like NamePros, Sedo, Afternic, Bodis, or GoDaddy CashParking. These platforms typically handle DNS settings and ad display automatically while offering a dedicated analytics dashboard. This setup allows you to observe key metrics such as impressions, CTR, and revenue per click.
  2. Implement Integrated Analytics While parking providers supply a wealth of data, integrating external tools like Google Analytics can provide deeper insights into visitor behavior. Track metrics such as the number of unique visitors, average session duration, and bounce rates. Running the test over a period (typically 30–90 days) can help account for fluctuations and produce reliable performance data.
  3. A/B Testing Across Settings and Providers Experiment with different configurations or even switch between parking providers on similar domains to see what yields the best return. For instance, you could test an A Record setup, pointing directly to a parking server with a placeholder page, with an alternative CNAME configuration where you redirect to an ad-optimized page. Evaluate which configuration garners higher CTRs and better revenue outcomes.
  4. Monitor and Compare Metrics Focus on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as:
    • Click-Through Rate (CTR): How often visitors click on the ads.
    • Revenue per Click (RPC) or Cost-Per-Click (CPC): The earnings generated per ad click.
    • Overall Monthly Revenue: Total earnings over time to determine consistency and seasonality.
    • Keep a detailed log or use spreadsheets to compare the performance of different domain types over similar testing periods. This systematic approach will help pinpoint which domains are the most lucrative for your portfolio.
  5. Iterate and Optimize Domain parking isn’t a set-it-and-forget-it venture. Use the data you gather to adjust DNS settings, switch providers if needed, or consider repurposing underperforming domains for other revenue stream uses. A continuous improvement cycle, testing, analyzing, and optimizing, is key to long-term success.

By carefully selecting domain types with inherent traffic potential and rigorously testing their performance through built-in and external analytics, you can build a robust domain parking strategy that maximizes passive income. Each domain type has its benefits and limitations, so diversification and informed adjustments based on reliable data are crucial.

All the above should be enough to help as a refresher and get us all on the right track.

Remember, at the end of the day, a domain name is truly only worth what a buyer and seller agree on.

What works for one may not work for another and vice versa.

Happy Domaining!
