WARNING: How to Avoid Domain Scams and Scammers

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
Prevention:

Google the domain (also try adding words like stolen, scammed, help, missing, etc), asking other domainers about the domain in question, checking the various marketplaces and making sure things add up... The biggest single indicator of a potential scam is the price. A scammer will want to price the domain low enough that it sells before he gets caught. Keep a watchful eye on new members. Recently modified whois is another warning sign. If other indicators are present (ex. extremely low price), proceed with extreme caution.

Some known scams:

1. Appraisal Scam -- If they ask for an appraisal, it's probably a scam.

2. Snail mail scam letters -- Letters through the mail reminding you to renew your domains from companies which aren't your current registrar

3. Compromised web-based email accounts and keyloggers -- Using an email provided to you by your Internet Service Provider is generally safer than web-based email solutions. There have been known security flaws in certain webmail applications in the past (ex. Gmail) which made compromising member accounts considerably easier than guessing a password. Understand the risks involved with using a web-based solution. Download spyware software such as Adaware Lavasoft and scan your computer daily. Keyloggers are A) easy to put on someone's computer and B) potentially catastrophic to a web based business.

4. Unauthorizing funds (particularly bad with Paypal). Paypal makes it very easy to create chargebacks. Don't accept large amounts by Paypal unless you're dealing with people you absolutely trust. Moneybookers/Escow.com are a step above Paypal, however the best option would be to go with a true escrow service such as Sedo Escrow, Moniker Domain Escrow Service or EscrowDNS.

5. Emails saying your domain requires renew/transfer/you to take a certain action. Check the email and make sure that A) it's from your registrar and B) the url mentioned matches what your registrar's would be. Safer to just visit the registrar than click the links in the email.

6. Incorrect Whois emails -- if your whois isn't incorrect, beware. Phone your registrar if you think they made a mistake.

7. Traffic/Click Fraud -- Self explanatory. If it isn't direct navigation it shouldn't be sold as such. Due diligence is required here.

8. Hijacking -- If you use one of your own domain names as the nameserver, be sure to make sure it doesn't expire or someone could fraudulently gain control of your domains.

9. Escrow.com is NOT 100% safe. They do not cover stolen domains -- buyer beware. Don't think processing a "bargain" through Escrow.com won't potentially end in you being out money. In the event a domain is stolen from someone's account, the domain WILL be returned to the original owner and you'll be out whatever you paid for the domain.

10. One thing I should add: Most free webmail providers will delete accounts after certain periods of inactivity. A clever scammer could notice that your Hotmail/Yahoo/other webmail account had expired, register that same email address (which is now available) and then proceed to "Request Password" at various registrars using what was previously your email address. If you plan on using your webmail infrequently, it's recommend you verify what amount of inactivity is tolerable and won't result in email account deletion.

-- SCAMMER ALERT --

A reputable member of DigitalPoint has become a scammer.

Member Name: Ash

She stole my domain names:

Zmul.com / Zmul
GJRF.com / Gjrf

Please see this thread where I dealt with her publicly.

She paid me once, took away the payment. I called her out. She then had her "partner" pay me. Now, that payment has been reversed.

The first PayPal email address used for payment was: [email protected] / kellywillhite
The second PayPal email address used was: [email protected] / mstearns84
The Scammers contact email and the name I transfered the names to is: [email protected] / bobwilkok

Personal Website: http://whois.domaintools.com/shopraider.com

Be on the look out for this scammer and do not do business with her, no matter how convincing her story.

I will post updates.

The more you yell about this the more sharks will come knowing PayPal won`t protect domain sellers, just STOP USING THAT COMPANY.

Wow, this is starting to get really ridiculous. Is PayPal that incredibly bad that they don't freeze accounts which have "X" amount of charge backs in a certain time period? Or even just 1 charge back atleast until they verify the REAL owner of the account is the one processing these charge backs.

Domain sales is becoming incredibly popular, PayPal really needs to get up to date with these type of sales. It's really pathetic that they already haven't.

Lol, thats understandable for you to say. As considering everything that has been going on, I will only be using Escrow for any type of domain sale.

But you also can't argue with these people for being pissed, this is also understandable. PayPal really needs to get on top of things..

I wonder if they ever start an Escrow service themselves... of course their charges would be ridiculous as they are already, but well...

What if it's a $50 domain name sale? $50 is $50.. I don't wanna be scammed out of it nor do I want to pay $25 to Escrow.com for a $50 transaction. What do you do then? Heck... I feel ripped off paying Escrow $25 for a $100 transaction. I guess it's better than loosing a domain name but it still feels like the lesser of two evils, IMO.

This is my first time being scammed after completing alot of successful domain name sales, I even dealt with a reputable board member, searched everything out did all I thought I could. This crap can happen to anyone using PayPal, I am deffinetly seeking other funding sources unless we have had previous dealings or I am familiar with you as a member.

I STILL WANT MY NAMES BACK YOU SCAMMER!!!! -- They have already been indexed by Google as being stolen.

it seems TRs, time you have been a member in a forum dont count regarding LLLL

they are so valuable people is destroying all their reputation to steal them... and what will hapeen to them?
with names indexed as stolen at google as GreenGambler made with yours (and i hope others have done the same thing), they will lose the best thing they had; their reputation

good luck and keep us updating, you that unfortunately had your names stolen
i really hope you all get them back :)

PayPal does not care because if they did they immediately would have fixed this, there also scammers the other way around....too long to explain but I have heard other stories of people given a different domain......so for PayPal to get on top of things they should get specialised in domains.....and till this industry won`t be as popular as others , the best thing to do is using Moniker Escrow.
If you want to trade $50 domains then you take the risks because there is nothing in the world that will give you back the domains , PayPal won`t absolutely do anything. It`s nothing new.

There is Moneybookers escrow. I am really happy customer. I even posted a thread in the break room:

http://www.namepros.com/the-break-room/431801-thank-you-moneybookers.html

They have an 1% escrow service. From what I heard it is secure, and I used it.

The problem is the "mass" does not use MoneyBookers. The Mass uses paypal and there is NO REASON why paypal can not offer the same thing MB is offering! Send them feedback. It will only take a couple seconds and you can help making a difference!

I sent PP feedback regarding my account limitations from July 2007 till now, and they still keep sending me their automatic emails regarding the steps to remove my account limitation.

I do not believe they read their emails sincerely. You can read my story in the above thread.

But, you are right, for some reason people use Paypal. Weird.

email: [email protected]

He/she claims to have a partner and that their email is:

PQHY GoDaddy 10/31/2008--->$59
PQYT GoDaddy 10/31/2008---->$59
UZRK GoDaddy 8/2/2008---->$59 (live site .ru)

Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated. I already contacted BlowDaddy and GayPal they are absolutely no help. "Nothing we can do on our end"

GreenGambler was also scammed. I need those names, that was my income, I was relying on them to pay my tuition and rent next semester. This sucks.

Maybe someone should contact the "Media" about
all the scamming PAYPAL allows. err, I mean all
the paypal chargebacks....There must be literally
hundreds of chargebacks as of late....and what
no red flags to paypal? They can see the transaction
history, how many chargebacks are people allowed to make?

If this happened at your bank, you can bet it'll be all over the news!

Anyone know any reporters?

I told about this to PayPal last August.......did anything Change? Nope.

And the more domains get noticed to be valuable the more bastards will come to scam.

Yofie: there is nothing worse than a company that does not want to listen.

I just contacted my lawyer. He is a corporate domain attorney and deals mostly with TM issues but I am hoping he can help. I also asked about a class action suit. I will keep everyone posted.

Thank You everyone for your help.

I agree, that's why we as a Whole community need to contact them. Some Very Negative press would help us along as well.... Any "marketing" members so it hits all the news outlet's and not just the domain news?
