Trouble with 1and1 registrar

I've begun transferring domains out of 1and1.com. I actually thought things looked good...I made it through their maze of instructions and settings to "cancel" domains at expiration...yet would unlock them for transfer.

The transfers took around five days. After plugging in the authorization code when I initiated the tfr, I received no notices from 1and1 of transfer requests (they said I wouldn't), but the tfrs went through.

Yesterday, I received an invoice for some domains I forgot to cancel. My mistake. The problem is that they also included charges for renewing domains that were already transferred to a new registrar (nine of them)...not pending or anything...done deals ahead of expiration dates.

When I wrote to them about it, they sent me a response that makes me think this is going to be a tough process. Below is their e-mail to me after I asked them to fix the invoice by taking off the transferred domains:
--------------------------------------
Dear xxxxx xxxxx , (Cust: 100xxxxx)

Thank you for contacting us.
I can understand your frustration, however if you read in your terms and
conditions, domains are non-refundable...just refer to the billing section of our
FAQ in our 1and1 website.

If you have any further questions do not hesitate to contact us.
------------------------------------

I don't know what to make of this. How can they charge me for something no longer registered with them? And why such an attitude?

I have not dealt with a registration issue with them before but they can be knuckleheads and usually provide lame canned feedback to issues. I suggest getting on the phone and dealing with someone directly to correct the problem.

I was also charged for domains moved out before, never got the money
back. They will send a collector agency if you don't pay.

1and1 and yahoo are known to charge for domains you no longer own.

yes indeed you got caught in the 1+1 honey-trap. It is not good enough just to transfer the names to another registrar, you have to also cancel the contract that goes with the original names registration and get confirmation from 1+1 that you have successfully cancelled the contract. Did you do this? (note: 1+1 is the same company that runs sedo)
1+1: the no. 1 slime registrar.

Yes, in the 1and1 cancellation panel, I set it to cancel with unlock / cancel at expiration.

I also acted on the follow-up e-mail they send to confirm the cancellations...and got the confirmations by e-mail of the cancellations.

You get what you pay for from registrars. Trying to save yourself pennies today could potential cost you countless headaches and dollars tomorrow.

Even if registering with 1and1 was a beginner's mistake a year ago, it is still no excuse for unprofessional service and possibly credit card fraud.

I agree totally. They are notorious for their red tape.

What 1and1 did to you is exactly how registrars like 1and1, RF, and GD stay in business--charging renewal fees (often for a hefty profit) even when the domainer does not want the service anymore (or has cancelled it).

Stay away from 1and1.com. They are mean and nasty to their customers from a billing standpoint. I spoke with a Ian Morris this guys has no compasion. My username and password were comprimised and I got a police report to validate the claim. Thye refuse to wiave the charges of $40.41 cents. They sent it to collections. Remember, if they send it to collections must write a letter back to dispute the charges within 30 days. I did this and the collection agency sent the claim back and closed it out. However, 1and1 refuses to give me the authorization code to get them back. The sadi thing I never had a bag experience until now. None of their people will make exceptions even if you jump through their hoops. Remember, if they send you to collections dispute the claim within 30 days otherwise it will show up on your credit report. I spoke to people at NCO agency they will make with your SSN even if you didn't give it to them and it can show up on your credit report. I opened a case with the FTC, BBB, and my us attorneys office. This isn't even about the money. It's about what they are doing is just wrong. Please do the same. Thanks.

I agree with all these posts...1and1 is a rediculous company...it couldnt be designed worse. Scares me that sedo and 1and1 are related and sedo should be ashamed to be connected with such a horrible service company.

3 words: Moniker moniker moniker

I still have some domains with 1and1 and I transferred some already. I'm still in the process transferring away from them. When I was transferring some of my domain they told me that I don't need to fax the cancellation. Something I learned with this company is that don't take any of their word for it.

Here's the procedure I've been taking:

1. Transfer out the domains first. Each line of contract can contain 3 domains so if you have 3 transfer all 3 within that contract. Wait until your domains shows up with your new registrar.

2. Go to 1and1 cancellation control panel where the contract of those domains reside. They will give you an option As soon as possible (be careful selecting this option this is where their scum come into play. they will not cancel it ASAP as stated instead they will wait until your domains is almost expired so they can charged you for renewal). or cancel it in 30 days (this is the best option for me because after 30 days it gets cancel).

3. Go to 1and1 control panel and make sure that the contract with those domains you canceled says Delete. You'll know this because it becomes deactivated. Then get a confirmation just to be in a safer side.

I would suggest that you give yourself plenty of time to do all this. I noramlly give it like 2 to 3 month before the domains expires.

I had over 3oo name reg with 1and1 and I to experienced a major headache when trying to transfer out.Whether it was after I sold some names or wanted to end a contract it never was a cake walk.
If you don't cnacel the contract and get out of auto renew at least a month before the domain expires your stuck paying another years reg.
These are the exact reasons why class action suits are filed and I'm sure sooner or later it will be and 1and1 will have to change it's ways.

For those who cancelled their domains successfully with 1and1 please provide an additional information if I missed something from the procedure above. This way we can help others to be 1and1 free.

xman is correct re what to do
add.
always check the small print that a fax is required and send the fax re cancellation of anything.
do not wait for near the renewal date.
start transferring out now
start cancelling domains now
start cancelling contracts now.
forget any form of email or phone conversation with these crooks..they deliberatelly outsource their nohelpdesk to those whose English is poor and know that there is nothing that they will do to assist you.
1+1 complete and utter rubbish.

I called customer service and also emailed to confirm about faxing and they told me faxing is no longer a required procedure. So far I've canceled everything in my account...I have 2 domains I canceled back in Aug 07 and these have been released to the public. I have about 8 more domains waiting for them to be released and 1 package w/ 2 domains going to expire when contract ends which is in a week.

I really hope I wont get bothered by 1and1 about anything. So far I heard nothing from them...I emailed billing department and they said so far no my account is fine nothing outstanding....I 've not received any emails about anything so I hope I am free after my last package deletes from my account.

Can someone give some feedback anyone successfully delete and completely free from 1and1? How would you go about delete your 1and1 account afterwards? Thanks!

When you login and can find nothing on your account, either names or contracts then you should be free BUT if there are any instructions on the old contract to send a fax, then send a fax: you need to have an acknowledgement that the fax has been received. Ignore any advice given to you on the telephone.
1+1 are the No.1 worst registrars by far.

Exactly!

I still have some few domain with them and I can't wait to be 1and1 free.

Be careful not faxing the cancellation. They have this trick.

Few months ago when I was canceling some of domains the fax didn't apply to cancel your domains. Then about a month or so ago the cancellation process to be complete you need to fax the copy of the cancellation. And now when you cancel your domains you don't need to fax it. So they will keep changing this process to trick you. What a total scam.

Man i can't sleep at night this sucks I keep worrying I dont know why a company does this to their customer. I have emailed twice now and was told to just follow the cancellation link and no faxing is required to cancel a package/domains. On the phone I was told several times as well and I remember clearly one of them said that faxing is no longer a required procedure because people complain and are too lazy to follow the steps....I emailed them just wanted it in writing so I emailed them.

Where in the contract does it say a fax is required? Also if you forgot about the fax how would you go about obtaining the form afterwards?....

When I login to my 1and1.com account I only see 1 package with 2 domains. My CC has been canceled a long time ago when it was lost and I didn't bother renewing the info for 1and1 so they can't auto renew my stuff. I have had 3 domains release to the public so far...awaiting about 6 more and this one package with 2 more domains to be release to the public.

I emailed 1and1 in regards to why I can't log into cancel.1and1.com it saids "customer number not found or doesn't exist something like that" to check the status of my last package, which is currently on delete, and they said my account has been terminated. I can still log on into 1and1.com they said that after all the domains expire that account will terminate as well... they said no user info will be kept. I hope thats true or I may change my info to some fake stuff I hate these guys...I want this over with!
