Over the last year, I've steadily transferred most of my domains out of 1and1. Once I figured my way through the labyrinth of their cancellation process, it has gone quite smoothly.
Much to my surprise, one thing I've noticed is that I've put in for a transfer on some domains only a day or two before they expire, and the transfers (which take 1and1 five days) have all gone through.
So if you are transferring out, there's hope!
