Humor is dying all over, for obvious reasons. All comedy is subversive and authoritarianism is the fashion. Comics exist to keep us from taking ourselves too seriously, and we live in an age when people believe they have a constitutional right to be taken seriously, even if — especially if — they’re idiots, repeating thoughts they only just heard for the first time minutes ago. Because humor deflates stupid ideas, humorists are denounced in all cultures that worship stupid ideas, like Spain under the Inquisition, Afghanistan under the Taliban, or today’s United States.

During the Trump era, there was a steep decline of jokes overall, but mockery of a president who’d say things like, “My two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart” rose to unprecedented levels. It was not only okay to laugh at Trump, it was mandatory, and the more tasteless the imagery, the better: Trump gay with Putin, Trump gay with the Klan, Trump with micropenis, Trump’s face as mosaic of 500 dicks, Trump as a blind man led by a seeing-eye dog who has the face of Benjamin Netanyahu and a Star of David hanging off his collar, Trump with a pen up his ass, Trump with tiny penis again. Pundits guffawed even more when someone threatened to sue artist Illma Gore for her “Trump’s tiny weiner” pastel, displayed at the Maddox Gallery in London. "It is my art and I stand by it,” Gore said. “Plus anyone who is afraid of a fictional penis is not scary to me.”

People cheered, because of course: anyone who even threatens to hire a lawyer to denounce a drawing has already lost. Cartoonists in this sense had no better friend than Trump, who constantly tried to block unfriendly renderings, including a Nick Anderson cartoon showing him and his followers drinking bleach as a Covid-19 cure (the Trump campaign reportedly called Anderson’s drawing of MAGA hats a trademark infringement). A lot of the anti-Trump cartoons were neither creative nor funny — if “He’s gay and has a little dick!” is the best you can do with that politician, you probably need a new line of work — and were only rescued by Trump’s preposterous efforts to defend his dignity. You can’t police a person’s private instinct to laugh, and there’s nothing funnier than watching someone try, especially if that person is already a sort-of billionaire and the president.

For all that, most of the jokes of the Trump era fell flat, precisely because they were obligatory. Modern humorists are allowed to laugh at bad people: racists, sexists, conspiracy theorists, Trump, anyone but themselves or the audience.

And why the dismissal of Tucker Carlson when he is one of the few in the media to cover the apparent fake Syrian gassing reports? Most Americans still think Assad did this, and it gives cover to the war profiteers.

Ricky Gervais has apparently chimed in on the row over a school teacher who showed his class a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad.

Batley Grammy School in West Yorkshire became the subject of protests after children were shown the cartoon, with parents complaining that the image was taken from the French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo.

The teacher in question has been suspended and has since apologised, while the school also offered an “unequivocal” apology.


The incident has prompted a row between protestors accusing the teacher of Islamophobia and those who claim the incident is a case of free speech and “censorship” in the classroom.

Gervais appeared to share his view on Friday (26 March), tweeting: “Blasphemy? F***ing Blasphemy? It's 2021 for f***s sake. What next? People being punished for insulting unicorns?”

The comedian has been a vocal campaigner for free speech for years, telling Fox News in an interview last year that people being offended was “the lesser of two evils”.

It's not the messenger, it's the message. The truth hurts. Quite frankly, there's still too many, far too many, living in denial for him not to remain central to the issue. Leonard Nimoy (RIP) would have been my choice.

Like you say, it's not the messenger, it's the message. If Trump was vaporized tomorrow, the message would still be there. He just took the ball and ran with it after countless successive Republicans betrayed their base. Ranting about the Donald will only make you unhappy.

Donald overstepped his presidential power. Far too many paid homage and lipservice to his rants, science denial etc. In fact the powers of a president are really quite limited in scope:

The president’s responsibilities are outlined in Article II of the Constitution and include:
  • The power to call state units of the National Guard into service (in times of emergency he/she may be given the power by Congress to manage national security or the economy.)
  • The power make treaties with Senate approval. He or she can also receive ambassadors and work with leaders of other nations.
  • The power to nominate the heads of governmental departments, judges to federal courts and justices to the United States Supreme Court. All nominations must then be approved by the Senate.
  • The power to issue pardons for federal offenses.
  • The power to convene Congress for special sessions.
  • The power to veto legislation approved by Congress. However, the veto is limited. It is not a line-item veto, meaning that he or she cannot veto only specific parts of legislation, and it can be overridden by a two-thirds vote by Congress.

He has the power to veto congress, but can be overridden. It is the Congress' responsibilty to promote Science and the Arts:

Amazing how so many of those on the left (and so many young people with degrees) are essentially automatons, repeating the same words incessantly, without a moment's though given to their meaning. Creates some absurd situations. Their mouths move, words come out, but there is no connection between the brain and the words. Like they are programmed.
