In chat, we've been testing out a new set of rules on Fridays to allow selling ("Casual Fridays"): More details.

Please let us know whether we should:
  1. Only allow selling in chat on Fridays like we have been doing.
  2. Extend selling in chat to the entire weekend.
  3. Allow selling every other day in chat.
  4. Always (24/7) selling in chat.
  5. Never allow selling in chat.
  6. Other (explain in a post)

Thanks in advance!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
Well, it's not getting handled now. I'm seeing Alienware giveaways posted over and over again. Is the goal to have a free for all? You hiring extra people to monitor it? Who's watching it now, are they doing it for free? The forum is getting busy itself, you going to overload the mods?

At this point i believe all week is the best with the rule that it cannot interrupt discussions that are in session. (keeping the 15 min rule should be sufficient. There will still be the need for a moderator to step in from time to time of course. allocating 1-2 "Chat Moderators" for this wouldn't hurt.

I seem to recall that years ago NP used to run auctions in chat. If I remember correctly the names would be submitted to NP and the auction would take place, these were well attended by members.

Perhaps something similar could be tried again. Perhaps the number of names permitted by member could be limited, say 2 individual names or one portfolio of domains to be auctioned as one lot. Those that submit domains could talk 'fairly' openly in chat prior to the auction that there names are included.

The auctions could be themed according to domains being auctioned. The auctions possibly could be weekly to start with and then perhaps specialist / themed auctions could also be inserted the schedule. Perhaps Friday evenings would be good, with perhaps the specialist / themed auctions occuring on Tuesday evenings.

NP could make a small charge for entering domains to cover running the auctions.

Anyway just my 2 penny worth.

Casual Weekends Time Zone Cheat Sheet

Casual Friday begins at 10:00 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) Thursday
Casual Sunday ends at 12:00 Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) Monday

https://savvytime.com/converter/y-to-utc-lint

On the above page there is a text box "Add Time Zone, City or Town" - To make it custom, everyone can enter their own Time Zone and then bookmark that page for easy reference

The first place on Earth to start a day is GMT +14:00 h
The last place on Earth to end a day is GMT -12:00 h

Line Islands and Yankee Time were the best I could find that worked with that web site
Every NP domainer should know UTC to facilitate our World Wide community : smile :

One suggest, if I may, would be to put a little more verbage directly on the chatroom page that reminds/teaches users some of the great features of the chat and NP.

For example, on sales days, some users have regular conversation while some users are just repeating the same sales message over and over again for the most part.

It took me a while to realize that I could "temporarily" ignore those users that were just running sales ads all day. Even if I forget to unignore them, I just check my profile page for people I ignore, and unignore everyone.

It is possible to have a pleasant experience in chat even on sales days if you set it up correctly.

Oh so this must be why I couldn't get your attention when I was giving away $1000 in chat the other day..

After first reading your suggestion of always selling the chat, I thought, nope, nope, nope. That was because I thought the chat would get spamy. However, now that I think of it, casual weekends are usually not spamy. The conversations are usually of higher quality due to more active chatters. I like this idea.

SPOT ON! (y)(y)(y)

Hello,

Don't forget to "Change Your Vote" in the poll if your choice has changed. ;)

Those members should not be allowed in chat as they are abusing the system at the expenses of others..
We banned a couple people from chat earlier today. We take action whenever we are aware of an issue. Please report.

I'd also like to see a clock in chat..or a countdown timer that one can start to make sure the 15 min have passed before posting.
https://www.timeanddate.com/stopwatch/

As someone else has previously pointed out instant messaging between chat users would be a great addition for selling.
I've added it to our suggestions list. Thanks,

One for just discussions, and the other for just selling.
It's been suggested a few times, but it would cause sales to be always hidden away in another chat room.

The value of chat is that it appears on every thread and has major exposure/views. We could create another chat room for 24/7 sales where only buyers and sellers look, but we already have a page dedicated to that here: https://www.namepros.com/marketplace/buy-domains

It wouldn't make sense to create another area that would have less exposure than what we already have. The idea of "24/7 chat selling" provides no value if it doesn't have increased views/sales. ;)

Hope that helps explain it,

Casual Weekends, but please move this freaking ON/OFF dot somewhere near to the input box or send button :D

With the current rule of 15 minutes in between sales posts, I don't see there being a problem having it open 7 days a week

so, every 15 min. somebody could post the same :poop: names, 7 days a week?

and you wonder why, it's not that much conversation there.

imo....

I like the idea of having two separate chatrooms, but I'm a bit concerned that it would result in the chatroom that doesn't allow domain names becoming inactive. Perhaps it would make more sense to differentiate between promotional messages and other messages, then add a preference to hide promotional messages.

A limit on how many messages can be posted by one member can be set in general... that is consecutive messages, within a certain timeframe, etc specifically on Fridays.

I voted for Fridays only.

I could not bear to view all the "Premium" domains for sale, when I am in chat on a weekday.

Since fewer log in on weekends, weekends may not be such a good idea, but at the same time, it could help improve traffic on weekends? I'm usually not on NP on the weekends, so it wouldn't affect me and other members who are not online.

I think 1 chat is enough, only on friday's I think it's enough, no one like spammy chats.

But, I must say there should be certain rules for everyone to follow there to prevent chat from spamming. May be, it ll need active 1-2 mods in chat every time to stop spamming there.

This is what I suggest.
Thanks

I agree with the separate "sales Chat" with 1 or 2 trusted Mods to stop the Spamming or at least control it.

Now this is embarrassing... :) I only just discovered there was a chat room on this forum after reading this thread...

Sales chat and non-sales chat are two different things, and a mixed chat room won't work as well as two separate rooms would. The two require different approach, different attitudes, different rules.

I.E.
  • Non-sales chat = relax, unwind
  • Sales chat = business, serious

It's not even ideal having a split in the same chat room, ie "Sales for X hours on Y days, non-sales all other times", as outlined below.

ONE CHAT ROOM

If this is kept to one chat room, whether Friday only or multiple days and times throughout the week:
  1. There are times where each chat room is closed to allow the other one to be open, chat should be available 24/7
  2. When the "sales" period begins, many will have been waiting all week/all day to post their names, which at one time could mean too many being posted in the small window to make it useful
  3. The two chat room types (sales/non-sales) are fighting for prime time slots, and yet it's ideal for both to have them
  4. It's not ideal chatting away about anything one minute and the next you're forced into a sales environment and your conversation cut short (which could be useful or important)
  5. It's not ideal if sales are being discussed and the "sales period/window" is over and chat returns to non-sales chat

SUGGEST TWO ROOMS

NON-SALES CHAT
  • Relaxed discussions about any topic
  • No need to worry about joking one minute then the next trying to sell a domain name and appear business like and serious
  • No sales of any kind, or promotions, or links to threads or sales-chat room offers etc
  • Chat and banter can take place all day everyday without interruptions, at a time/day convenient to each user
SALES CHAT
  • Official and serious sales discussions, no place for "Hey did you see that video the other day - [youtube_link]"
  • Discussions only to be about sales, prices, offers, which registrar, length of ownership, etc
  • Heavily moderated with stricter rules to stop people over promoting their domains, etc
  • Serious sales can take place all day everyday without interruptions, at a time/day convenient to each user

I'm sure both rooms would be busy enough to warrant it.

I don't see any real advantages to using only one chat room, other than costs/dev time etc. Seems everything points to it being a bad idea and two rooms being much more suitable.

I know two chat rooms is more work (dev, upkeep, moderating, etc) but I think two different chat rooms is the sane solution to make it manageable for differences in rules/moderation, and more structured and purposeful places to cater for different needs.

Integrate an IRC network for namepros, that way there can be multiple channels for different chat subjects including sales.

So if majority of the votes went with always... why cant we always sell in chat?

2
•••
dont matter hes right the vote is in by a big margin.

2
•••
You could also flip this around for 88 to cover the whole weekend

2
•••
It's not that simple:
  • 58 votes are for Always
  • 94 votes (At least) are for Not Always (Never, Every other day, Weekends only, Fridays only)
That's why we do not plan to change it at this time. We are considering creating two rooms (One for Chatting and one for Selling).

True, I didnt think of it that way. Interesting to see the 2 chat rooms in the future maybe.

@Eric Lyon - Thank you for sharing how to report a member in chat. Can that be added to the Chat Rules or Help page?

Actually both rules and help links go to the same page : grin :
