In chat, we've been testing out a new set of rules on Fridays to allow selling ("Casual Fridays"): More details.

Please let us know whether we should:
  1. Only allow selling in chat on Fridays like we have been doing.
  2. Extend selling in chat to the entire weekend.
  3. Allow selling every other day in chat.
  4. Always (24/7) selling in chat.
  5. Never allow selling in chat.
  6. Other (explain in a post)

Thanks in advance!

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
A separate chat for sales only would create a comfortable chat for non sellers and buyers while providing a 24/7 live sales for buyers to scan when they want and even request domains they are looking for. The forums do get more sales but there are a lot of domains mentioned in chat that are not in the forums..
thanky for your time :)

To me anything where someone posts: "vugihih.me for sale pm me" then 15 min later posts it again, and again, will lead to the chatroom being the sales chat room.

What I would like to see is if the chatroom is talking about a subject and someone has a domain within that subject they can say 'I have one of those PM me if you are interested" without be admonished.

No offense to NP staff, I'm sure they have better issues than monitoring the chatroom 24-7. I also appreciate that they gave us this privilege.
I am putting use of the sales chat on hold. I do love the idea of it but it has some issues I feel would be easy to fix.

1) SPAM - It is not very fair to other members who follow the rules when others come in and post their sales every 1-5 minutes (sometimes several with a minute) pushing all other advertisements off the page leaving only theirs for the most part.

2) NAME BASHING. I do love a good lesson in chat but when someone posts a domain for sale and someone instantly follows with " That domain is horrible, I feel sorry for whoever buys that name" This is flat out disrespectful and should not be tolerated. The majority of these name bashers are not usually experienced in either domain investing or the niche involved anyway.
How to fix this?
Having a separate chat room for sales only (hoping it could be set at the minimum amount of time to advertise again currently 15 minutes between posts per member) if it is possible? Questions about their posts can be conducted via PM. Having this 15 minutes between posts will also help prevent intentional name bashing. Other option is to bring in a volunteer chat moderator or two to oversee things.
This will not only prevent spam from pushing ads up but heavy conversations can clear a screen within a minute or two. Having the separate chat for domain talk will help take care of this.

Look at the new Casual Weekend GREEN Light!

Just so everyone knows, it does not show up in the mini chat in the sidebar OR in the "Full Chat" window
Hoping this is a work in progress and it will be on all chat displays AND much bigger : smile :

To get the pop-up words, mouse over the green dot

Why not create two chat channels/rooms just like back in irc days, one for casual chat one for selling.

I vote for always for a number reasons :

First , we can peomote the domains and running auctions without having to wait 24 hours to bump.

Second , the chat will be more active. Right now if it is not Friday, the chat is almoat abandoned.
So it should be allowed all the time .

Another thing, the 15 min interval is good but there should be a way for me to know when I laat poated a sales message. Right now , it is hard to meet the 15 min interval

There's already a section of the forum to buy and sell domains. Keep the chat to casual discussion.

1) SPAM - It is not very fair to other members who follow the rules when others come in and post their sales every 1-5 minutes (sometimes several with a minute) pushing all other advertisements off the page leaving only theirs for the most part.
Please report when this happens by visiting the member's profile page and using the "Report" link at the top right.

We've banned a couple members this week for violating chat rules, but if members don't report them, we won't be able to catch them all. Everyone must follow the rules but it requires help from members who follow the rules to report members not following them.

2) NAME BASHING. I do love a good lesson in chat but when someone posts a domain for sale and someone instantly follows with " That domain is horrible, I feel sorry for whoever buys that name" This is flat out disrespectful and should not be tolerated.
This is not allowed in sales listings and it's not allowed in Chat either. The chat rules have been updated to make that clearer:

Added for clarity:

Do not violate rule 6.1.1 by posting anything about another member's domains for sale that may devalue or hinder a sale. The only exception to this rule in chat is if the seller has requested opinions or commentary on their domains.

For your consideration, I would like to request to revisit the idea of ALWAYS selling in chat.

The Casual Weekend has been in place two months, I would venture to say most active chatters are enjoying the long selling weekends and has proven to be positive along side conversation. Allow ALWAYS would eliminate the confusion members are experiencing with the current allowed hours.

I'd love to know what the sales rate/percentage is for names posted for sale in the chat box and that sell as a result of the chat post alone. I would guess its miniscule. Pretty pointless spamming names in chat when there's a whole section of the forum for selling. Might as well knock it on the head. That's the easiest solution.

Addition - I also wonder if the sales spamming actually deters people from participating in the chat room and that if there wasn't the constant threat of having names solicited to you, you might be more likely to have a look and maybe take part/instigate a chat. I know I very very rarely even look at the chat let alone post as I know it's just broken up with names for sale.

At first, I thought NamePros chat would be the perfect place for live sales. I imagined quality domains being advertised by a wide variety of people. Unfortunately, the reality is that the same handful of people push the same terrible names over and over and over again.

Personally, I would love to see chat sales disappear.

*poof*

Hi Eric,
I hope you remember Rami's fundraising Chat sales
Is there any chance to bring such chat auctions ?

  • A mod can auction the names.
  • User can submit upto 3 names for an event - $1 Reserve auction
  • Weekly auction

and similar thing for fixed price sale

Scheduled live auctions is a great way to go. (No reserve)
There should be a limit in how many Domains can be auctioned per seller.

That auction for Rami attracted many buyers including myself.

So if majority of the votes went with always... why cant we always sell in chat?
dont matter hes right the vote is in by a big margin.
It's not that simple:
  • 82 votes are for Always
  • 116 votes (At least) are for Not Always (Never, Every other day, Weekends only, Fridays only)
That's why we do not plan to change it at this time. We are considering creating two rooms (One for Chatting and one for Selling).

Edit: Stats updated on May 19, 2017

*** 2017 BUMP ***

Voted for always. The special holiday free-for-all was a great idea by @Michelle

Since there was no hurry up rush time limit for selling, it was spread out, members were able to have normal chat and occasional sales pitches intertwined, without much disruption of flow. The current system, Fridays get hit hard.

Allow Always - maybe there can be an adjustment to the time limits - only allow one sales post per hour and keep the limit per day, but make it a limit per member not per domain.

No offense @Eric Lyon the way you posted and interpreted this poll is mathematically misleading : grin :

There should be two individual polls - Allow Selling in Chat - YES or NO. Rather a moot point as it is already allowed. The only solution for this is two chat rooms.

Once determined the Allow Selling answer is YES, then How Often is a separate issue, AND only allow one vote, multiple votes skew the results. If you change the poll, the poll should be ZEROED out, and everyone can vote fresh with the new parameters.

How to Lie with Statistics
- 121 votes are FOR selling - Always, Every Other Day, Weekends, Fridays
- Then a mere 35 Votes for Never
Ignored Other due to ambiguity

Every Other Day should be eliminated because how confusing would that be to figure out with our International membership of every time zone?! Then define Weekends - does that include Fri Sat Sun and count if it is Fri Sat Sun anywhere in the world?

Plus even on non-sale days, you get members "Creatively" mentioning domains that just happened to be for sale anyway.

I believe the past week it was allowed for the holidays has proven that it doesn't ruin the flow of normal conversation. if anything it helps create conversation when chat would normally be slower. I am fine with 24-7 with rules in place.

*Allow ALWAYS would eliminate the confusion members are experiencing with the current allowed hours.

in Yoda voice

no confusion, rules ignored intentionally, problem it is...

respectful of guidelines, adherence, they feel, not apply to them.

staff, no see or not so important, uh, maybe

rules written for forum, chat part of forum, uh, then... rules apply to chat

hmmm

imo...

After first reading your suggestion of always selling the chat, I thought, nope, nope, nope. That was because I thought the chat would get spamy. However, now that I think of it, casual weekends are usually not spamy. The conversations are usually of higher quality due to more active chatters. I like this idea.

I think sailing in chat should only be on fri - sun for normal NPers. But for elevated paid accounts, they could have some kind of weekday privilege. Thjat helps NP out because more ppl will buy upgrades just because they want to sail... in chat. And eveyrone knows the x,xxx sails happen in np chat, ya.

But tbh, the mass bumping of NP auctions should be enough, u know? No need to pollute chat by new accounts. Leave the daily spam to gold accounts and above.

Namepros discord is what is needed!

From my experience with discord is that it's a Big NOOOO! For any forum community. It will destroy the forum in about a month.

So because I cant edit my post, I'd have to admit I was wrong.

i think selling should be allowed on the weekend.

the weekends are so boring anyway. i don't see selling hurting the chat it makes it more interesting imo

1.

Make a second sales chat, selling is allowed and no rules to to intervals also.... yet there should still be someone (who would want to do this of course) who is now regularly in chat, around with mod powers for the chat, to stop extensive none stop spamming of the same name every minute or 30 seconds....

2.

If we make to chats the very few that pop along and complain about casual Friday cause its so spammy and blahblah that are usually never in chat anyways, can then hit the nonseller chat and just post their clean: Hi message wait for 2 minutes maybe get lucky and have a 3 minute conversation and then leave again...

3. we can call them the dead chat (the non advertising chat this will be) and the active chat (this will be the selling chat)

I dont think it now matters if a chat is a bit spammy but atleast you can buy and sell names, cause otherwise it would just be empty with a hi, here and there...

Having selling allowed in chat always defeats the purpose of having it called "Chat".

The definition of "Chat" (Reference.com/Dictionary.com) is "to converse in a familiar or informal manner" manner, not "to sell in a familiar or informal manner". This would open it up to nothing but spamming and that will lead to a decrease of people exchanging good and useful information in the chat room. It will eventually be known as a selling only area, so then why not call it sales chat?

Allowing it always will basically hurt the exchange of good information via chat, so then where would someone then go who just wants to learn and ask questions about domains?

Having every other day would lead to confusion as to when it's allowed and when it's not, so that option isn't going to be the best.

If you want to allow sales/sales promotion in chat, then why not create a separate widget/area exactly like "Chat" and call it "Sales Chat"? That way anyone that just want's to chat about domains and good useful information can do that, and someone looking to buy and sell will have an audience that is there for that sole purpose.
