The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The deceiving thing about alternative extensions even before the launch of new TLDs is that it is easier to obtain better keywords in these extensions than would be the case with .COM which has some 125 million registrations and is viewed as the default TLD in the US. Sometimes domain bloggers which announce recent .COM acquisitions and I am unimpressed. Of course in less popular extensions it is easier to obtain better keywords. But when you try to put $5k to $25k prices on them you price yourself out of the market. The only reason a developer will consider buying your .Whatever when there are hundreds of alternative TLDs is because they can buy a great keyword for $XX.

Mike Berkens wrote a great article:

Frank Schilling’s North
Sound Names Starts Deleting Its 230,000 Uniregistry Domains

http://www.thedomains.com/ 2016/09/...arts-deleting-its-230000-uniregistry-domains/

Guy who's pushing new gtlds giving up on it? How many names u guys dropped? Anyone still believes in it?
nothing wrong with the new gtld's and some will sell for an absolute fortune but remember frank owns a registrar and some of the new gtld's were never going tell or were trademark infringed from.the start etc but i still think that overall frank will make a considerable profit on the absolute peach new gtld's that are highly liquid that will far outweigh any initial losses from his investment in new gtld's not forgetting that holding to donai s usually proves extremely profitable as TIME is the best investment tool

Many people use the excuse for not having spectacular domain names is they weren't around to pick them up years ago. Years from now what will be your excuse, when you could have gotten a generic one word or 3l in a cctld or legacy tlds, anyways you opted to see more value in new g's.
It's been a couple years now and new g's are still considered highly speculative.
Just my opinion.

Even in real life, anything that don't make sense you lost.
I didn't buy any chips

there were a lot of posts on here from experienced domain investors saying stick to .com and even the experienced Chinese investors prefer .com domain names albeit 2 letter and 2 number .com s

Domain names are like cars - there are many variations of cars but if you want the best you buy z rolls royce they cost more but are worth it and for those that buy a rolls royce money isn't an issue

It is possible to get the same keyword.ngtld or keyword.cctld for the same price these days, I personally see more value in the latter. So the money difference is not an excuse for not taking advantage of opportunities.

I also had dropped some. But invested in dot com especially in 4ls.

If you look at new GTLD names with a right now attitude then obviously you will not be satisfied with perceived value. You need to hold these things!
One word keyword names that directly relate to the extension, hold them...

Impatience is leading to the cocky "I told you so" mentality, but its only been two years! Everyone is accustomed to domains as they are right now, it does not just change overnight. When .com domain names launched at the beginning of the internet most large corps didn't even see a need to register their own name! Remember the McDonalds negligence comedy?

.com is king now, and will probably long live, but no king ever rules forever.

The problem is that even patience will not pay off.
For example the pioneers who bought .info/.biz domains early are not making such a good return should they liquidate now, that is15 years later. New extensions won't be any different. They should be treated as toxic investments.

The ROI has been made from registries, registrars, and ICANN. :)

Unclear but yeah. Namecheap stopped support of .COLLEGE and .RENT domains too.

To me at least, all the .mobi bashing is a good sign. It means people are aware of the extension and of what it represents: change. We'll soon (to be understood sometime within the next decade) be using our mobiles insted of our computers to do the bulk of surfing. This is a negative sum game: the traffic gained by .mobi will be traffic lost by other extensions, mainly .com. And obviously there will be those trying to fight this change, but in the end the advent of mobile internet is a logical necessity and therefore unstopable.

So hell, no amout of mobi bashing should scare us. In fact we should only be scared if there was none!

Absolutely true :) But seems like most people can not get this simple idea. I already understood we can never explain this to someone who needs to have immediate cash flow from domain trading, who depends on it. Many people here needs to earn money from domains NOW. They are professional domainers, doing this for years, some of them have developed very good business models and they can repeat it again and again. They do not like new gTLDs, because they know that part of investors money which will flow to new names (and it is huge part now), will not flow to their - proven - names. Their proven business models are already suffering in many cases. Some of them are not doing well lately...but it is also too difficult to jump on new names, exactly because they are perceived as risky investments, they are so many at the same time, there are no statistics, its difficult to process correctly all the information, and also they are not (yet) producing repeated sales and monthly cash low.. so they wish new gTLDs would just vanish from existence ..

There are lot of people here who does not need NOW..we can take educated bet and wait for later..we do not really depend from cash flow from domain sales, although when there is some, it is great. We believe we need to buy assets (in this case new GTLD names) when almost everyone is unsure about these assets, so prices are very low..when everyone will be finally convinced, priced will skyrocket, this is time when most people are like.."oh, we are also going to buy.."..too late then! Is there a possibility we will loose money? Yes. Should we care about it? Well, if you really need to care about it, stay where you feel confident ,in your proven business models..but do not expect different (=better) results when you just repeat old things.

PS: I know about ..mobi and other extension. I can google and have studied the hype in old posts which were ongoing on this forum. However, you can not again and again compare .mobi + few others from that time with thousands of new TLDs which are out now - now internet is really changing, .mobi is maybe 1% of importance, comparing to importance of what is going on at internet today.

I am surprized @Michael Ehrhardt hasn,t asked "where Gtld,s ever alive?

But they are dead Beautiful.Luxury they all suck. The registries expect us to promote them, because they haven't. Namecheap dropping 3 of danny's extensions, with email providers blocking xyz, only the .top registry is doing good, +4,600 names again today. Entire industry is corrupt. Got an update on the shill bidding here at namepros thread, what a disgrace dontBet.HorseTo.Win

“Just like any other private business starting up, all these new TLDs will have a 50 per cent chance of going out of business in two or three years,” Holland says. “That’s going to be somewhat disquieting to people.”

Old news, 2012, irrelevant. It's just like when trying to compare .mobi in 2016, doesn't fly today.

Also love how the article calls us cyber squatters, that term has always ticked me off..

Follow the money, way too much being invested in new g's for there not to be change and it's already been happening slowly but surely as far as end users.

Yes follow the money it's important. Off topic but Clinton will win the U.S. election whether many like it or not but again follow the money. Every offshore betting site has the big money on her, she will win like it or not.

Once again follow the money! ;)
