I guess they will use it like directx for new realities.

Time will tell.

So now we have "DR" to add to our AR/VR/MR/XR etc., etc... ???!!! (You can go broke trying to keep up! ;))

On another topic, a quick nod to "Holo" names:

Interestingly enough, HoloHack.com points to a non-MS-related company working on a VR real-estate/architecture play...

360VRPhotography

What’s next for 360-degree photography?

360-degree photography and VR are breaking new ground, not just in gaming but also in business. Leading companies are finding that a more immersive experience pulls their users in.

Some of the world’s biggest players, such as General Motors and McDonald’s, are getting serious about VR and 360-degree technology, building new products and VR experiences for their customers. For example, if you stop by a McDonald’s in Sweden, you can turn your Happy Meal into a pair of virtual reality goggles. Just slide your smartphone into the specially folded box and you can play a game where you hit the ski slopes.

Last year, I declared VR was not quite ready to explode, due to cost of the equipment, a gaping hole in available content, clunky headgear, and the financial viability of some early innovators. That prediction turned out to be true for most industries, with the exception of gaming. On the business-to-business and business-to-consumer sides, too many businesses are still viewing 360-degree photography and VR as bells or whistles they don’t need to think about yet, or ever.

That is a big mistake.

I will never tell anyone to keep or drop names on my advice because I would hate for things to go another way than I am expecting and someone ends up dropping names that they should of kept.

But I am pretty sure we are not seeing a new "Reality" here and the fact they refer to direct reality "software" for gaming and online gaming suggests it's going to just be some sort of application that is going to be used for gaming.

By this I mean Microsoft will still be 100% Mixed Reality as far as their ecosystem. But a program or app called direct reality will be introduced to enable the ability to access a certain type of gaming in the same way "Xbox Live" does.

This is just what I am expecting though. If people feel there is enough promise to keep or reg "DR / Direct Reality" names then I have no problem with that (y)

It seems like good news for those who bet on mixed reality.

Congrats.

How is that good news? If they start using yet another term on top of Merged and Mixed to confuse their customers even more it's not really good news for Mixed Reality domain investors....

This isn't another term though mate.

It's just a trademark for a computer program for playing games, so likely just an App or Emulator that will enable cross platform headsets to play against each other in a live environment.

The same sort of thing as Xbox live is my guess.

Mixed Reality is still their ecosystem and the name of the tech they are trying to achieve. Direct Reality will just be a computer program within the the Mixed Reality OS.

Well that is my take on it anyway.

If they promote another "reality" terminology, whether it be a trademark or name of an app or whatever, it will confuse consumers more than they already are with AR VS VR. It doesn't matter if it's just a product. When they hear "direct reality" they will automatically associate it with the other realities...

If they're not going to promote this trademark as a brand of a product that will hit center stage, then it may not cause any confusion.

Yeah mate pure speculation from my part. Who knows.

I suppose we won't have to wait long to find out.

It is a brand, it is not bad for the VR that Oculus is called that, what is really important is that new products and services are created for MR, and more if microsoft.

I think it can be more than just an application, maybe the next MR platform

If DR is a platform for MR which most will see as advanced AR it will be very, very confusing for consumers. Very unprofessional marketing IMHO.

R.I.P Microsoft lol....
