As most of you know, the .eu domain goes public on Friday.

How valuable do you think that the .eu domains will be then, and what about in 2 years? Where will it stand relative to .com and .net, and individual country code domains within the European Union?

Your opinions are appreciated :)

I think it's not much valuable such as net because of reg price .

Registrations after two years will probably be lower than after two months. With the massive interest in .eu almost everyone will register one. After one or two years many people will let their names drop.

no idea but reg fee is definately recoverable..so no loss.ofcourse not for crap domains

I can see ".eu" surpassing the value of all other ccTLDs.

Eurid have said they will drop the price that registrars have to pay them from the current e10 to e5 next year. I have a very strong feeling that .EU will most certainly be more popular then .net and will equal .com in popularity. You must remember .eu is particularly attractive for firms located in Europe already as it will give them greater coverage within the eu and outside and foreign companies who want a strong presence within Europe will want to have a .eu domain as well.

i dont see it getting to big... not in just 2 years..
all eu countries already have heavily promoted extensions

Pre-registration figures indicate it is already getting big with tremendous interest in .eu.Europe's economy is experiencing rapid growth and the common currency has had the result of all kinds of trade and employment barriers dissapearing. I think .eu will be huge. All the indications are there. Companies with current cc tld's will add a .eu tld as well to get more coverage.

Yep but in 2 years there will be another big extension and .eu will find it difficult to gain value for premium but not sex/business/money etc... type names.

and for lets say the top 1000 truely premium names you'll be lucky if 20 people/companies own them all.

I see .eu becomming one of the main extensions. And certain the biggest gTLD. There are more than 450 million residents of the EU and more to come. The EU is a large developing area, with some huge growth rates. Should be very interesting.

I think .eu will be huge, but more of a 5-10 year time frame.

and how many of those pre-reged are domainers loking to pick them up?
everyone said the .us extension would thrive but it hasnt..

problem in my opinion is all domainers will pick up all the good domains then no companys will get them and the extension wont be promoted enough

I disagree. The extension will be promoted by large companies with large advertising and development budgets. These are the companies which promoted all of the major extensions, including dot com. If a domain has already been registered, the company will pay the domainer for it (or take them to TM court for it).

Also, before the public pre-registration period that we are now in, there were a few months of trade mark holder registrations for companies to claim their domains (for example, Microsoft and Mircrsoft.eu)

Hi,

I don;t think that everyone isnt grasping the difference between the .EU and the country code domains. This is a TOP LEVEL DOMAIN, with this label it will be amongst the big domain extensions without any problems.

The interest already expressed in the sunrise periods suggests a phenominal interest in comparison to that of other domain extensions that have been released in the past.

I have high hopes for the .EU extension and I have a few pre-registrations. So I look forward to the final rush. I hope that when I get home from school on the 7th Arpil that I can smile with sweet relief that I actually have some domain names that are worth holding on to and DEVELOPING.

I have to admit that I really do wish for the .EU not to become a playground of domain parking pages. To anyone that is pre-registering a .EU or two or twenty... PLEASE DEVELOP THEM and don't leave the .EU with cluttored parking pages.

Good luck in the landrush :tu:

- Luke :)

yeh but how many companies actually kow about the .eu ext trademark holder registration period? its not like they were all contacted or anything..
google yahoo mircosoft etc... all might secure thier trademarks but i dont see them using them google already has .co.uk .de .fr .it etc.. all people from those countries are redirected to there own ext.. so i dont really see what google and other huge comapnies will do with the domains..

i just cant see why all the companies(including very small ones) will go for .eu when they are already setup in other extensions with top search engines spots with tons of money already spent on advertising..

it wont be promoted enough (in terms of companies using .eu extensions and letting the public know of it..)

When you check Google for .eu sites, many of them have already been well developed. I think people under estimate the importance of .eu

I know that .com is an international TLD, however it seems to be more of a US extension, which is why I think that the .us failed.

Very valid point as i mention a while back in discussing the .eu my main company has thousands of businesses hosting with oursleves, we only host and provide business email and web. Not one of them has asked us to pre-reg the .eu for them because of the amount of money invested in the .com or .co.uk extension they already have. In there eyes when i discussed the new .eu the reply i get is well i have the .com and to me that is the greatest extension we will need in partnership to our .co.uk or .de name.

i have a few pre-registered myself, and while i have seen some hopeful signs about the future of .eu domains, your message was probably some of the most discouraging news i have seen

but unfortunately, if that's what you've been told by your customers it must be true, as far as a corporate interest in promoting the .eu extension

hopefully though, there is another way to get the .eu extension planted in the minds of the millions of internet users as a real and great alternative

possibly and maybe even a quicker way, than relying on the long term promotion of .eu by the corporate world, would be to get just a few sites functioning that "somehow capture the imagination of the public"

such as a myspace.com site - the .eu version

or something totally different, although in the end the most popular use of the internet today is what really it has always been, a personals message board

the challenge is intriguing...
