Brexit - Britain has voted to leave the EU !

.EU
is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the European Union

.EU domain are only available for organisations in and residents of EU member states

Could this mean a mass drop of .EU domains where British registrants no longer satisfy the requirements ?

Will there be a grace period where British registrants can quickly sell their .EU domains that they will lose there rights to ?

Or, have they lost the rights to this ccTLD with immediate effect ?

They have not left the EU, simply voted to leave which will take at least 2 years.

Plenty of proxies out there anyway so no problem.

uk residents usually prefer .co.uk or large multinational's prefer and can afford .com

even in eu? eg germany etc would prefer .de i'd have thought to .eu

will take at least 4 - 5 years to leave completely, possibly longer.

Woke up to the result here in the UK, and PM stepped down, all quite a day so far!

It's funny you ask this question @frank-germany ?

Most people I talk to who are dissatisfied with the European Union blame it's demise on it's German influence and they way they dictate matters concerning it's citizens.

The EU is a beautiful idea that is becoming sour. Powerful countries like Germany are destroying the small ones, like Greece, Portugal, Cyprus etc. by imposing massive reforms and austerity, bailing out failed banks, ridiculous regulations, etc. while allowing in millions of illegals without qualifications and without documentation and then imposing on EU countries, a quota of illegals that each country must accept... or else!

To add insult to injury these illegals get free everything (housing, schooling, unemployment benefits, training, Medical, Dental, even translators, internet and pocket money, to name a few) while the local population struggles with high unemployment, lower benefits, lower pensions, more misery, etc.

The EU needs a really powerful punch in the stomach, followed by a swift kick in the ass, so that they learn the lesson the hard way.

Having said all that... I have a sneaking suspicion that the vote will be to stay, thanks to possible voter fraud... just like what happened in Austria last month

There's a serious lack of democracy in the EU. EU wide legislation is influenced by the highest bidder and lobbying is ripe, you just have to look at the Tobacco products directive to see it at work, and it's a travesty imho. The EU needs serious reform, failing this, I firmly believe it's the beginning of the end of the EU as we know it.

Interesting times ahead.

Do you think domainers should stop investing in .EU domains now ?

Ireland are now the only English speaking country left in the EU. You would have to start investing in other European languages, then you have to compete with heavily favoured cctlds in most countries.

Short answer, yes. Demand will be low, and what demand will remain will not be from major companies looking to set up on .eu, so any ROI will be very hard to achieve imo.

.eu is open to EFTA countries as well (a rather recent change), that means Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein are also eligible.
It's no longer strictly reserved to EU member countries.

the .eu extention doesn't have a lot going for it as many countries want to leave the eu so add the unpopularity of the eu to the really good gtld's that are already available and some good ones on their way etc and investor would have to ask themselves which would i rather own an .eu or a great new gtld and the great new gtld would probably be cheaper if bought at reg fee because the investor buying a .eu to sell on for a profit would want to sell the .eu for considerably more than a new gtld at reg fee

Will some websites have to change there domain to a different TLD ?

Should British registrants get ready for the inevitable switch away ?

i suppose businesses that currently use the .eu may or may not be allowed to continue to use them but if they are required to change their domain names etc the only time changing from a .eu to something of a business equivalent would be a problem is if the .com or .co.uk was not available and subsequently the .uk was purchased by the .co.uk of their domain name which if such a business had to change they may be tempted to make an offer to buy the .com or .co.uk but .LTD is either now available or about to become available which would suit many uk businesses because many are LTD etc equivalent to .inc et in america i think? or gmbh in germany etc
