I've started a thread for the CIRA TBR here. My hope is to make it a slightly livelier thread than this one.
CIRA TBR
I have so far been posting my thoughts about name values in upcoming drops.
Feel free to engage in a discussion, comment, criticize or even flame. I'm fairly thick-skinned and you won't hurt my feelings.

Open question to all: How have your .ca sales fared over the summer? I have received very few inquiries, no counter offers and no sales this summer. I only own about 30 .ca's though so it's a small sample.

Without giving away any state secrets I would like to know how you all have been faring.

Torrents and uhh will be the hot tickets.

Got a great expired company domain last week. Averaging 40 visitors per day with 90% CTR and .35 EPC! Hope the traffic lasts a long time!

Thank you for your help guys!
REP added to all (tried to rep you again mis_chiff, but it says that I need to rep others first)

What is the recommended backorder company for .ca?

•••
Right now I would be sure to use Pool.com and Sibername.ca

I hesitate to recommend pool dot com. They are good at catching but I have had a helluva time with customer service experiences plus they don't have a tollfree number and their e-mail responses are slow.
They do however have a half price sale until the end of august on their .ca backorders.

I don't have any experience with Sibername but will check them out soon enough.

Don't hold out! Which one was it? PM if you must.

If it is a single word and remotely usable it will be grabbed or try to be grabbed by multiple people. The recession has had little bearing on the tbr - auction prices are down slightly but the numbers of people seeking domains is as high as ever.

The domain was a provincial one

I got four so far today too. In auctions for more - good times ahead.

Thanks.

However, if I use pool.com and backorder a .ca name, will pool.com reveal my name in the public to the potential bidders if I'm the only one who backorder?

No, Pool doesn't display what names are backordered to other users, so you can request the domain in advance without being concerned about attracting attention to it.

But as whitebark alluded to, many people participate in the weekly tbr, so don't be too confident that nobody else will be trying for the same name...

Are you backordering or straight dropcatching?

TBR Wed Aug 26

Some interesting stuff in this weeks TBR. Nothing truly outstanding though. Here goes:

I'm declaring not a single site but a group of related sites as this weeks top pick:
TopMovies.ca - 90500 global searches,8100 local searches,$.72
TopSongs.ca - 165000 global,14800 local,$.67
TopVideos.ca - 14800 global,590 local,$1.13
TopWebsites.ca - 14800 global,1000 local,$1.58
TopShows.ca - 1600 global,140 local,$.68
A few of these should generate some type-in traffic. Perfect for development and you only need one template. Crosslink to generate even more traffic.

The rest in no particular order:
Fiero.ca - 40500 global,8100 local,$.83. Yes, there are trademarks involved but not from whom you think. Do your research.
NaughtyGirl.ca - 135ooo global,5400 local,$.45.
IndoorGolf.ca - 8100 global,1000 local,$1.28
HometownHeroes.ca - 2400 global,1000 local,$.86

Thanks for the information :)

I've backordered several .ca domains, but they are going to be dropped after August 26.
It seems as though pool.com's .ca 50% off special lasts until August 26.

Does it mean that if pool.com catches the domains after August 26, I will pay $60 each?

You would have to contact pool for the answer, but I suspect you will $60.:'(

So did anyone get anything interesting or are you stuck in auctions?

I got declare bankruptcy and public air waves - nice expired traffic domain... now if only pool would hurry up so I can park it. But then pool still hasn't responded to my domain from last week. It's only been eight days and three unanswered support requests since...

Pool support sucks!!! Now that the .ca backorder sale is over I won't be using them very often. It took me 3 weeks, 2 money orders, more than a dozen e-mails and about 4 phonecalls (which I paid for) to get a backordered domain. I can't believe this company does not provide a toll free number. I have a tollfree number, it was free with my webhost. It's totally unprofessional to not have one for a company of this size. And they don't take Paypal or Moneybookers. Their stupid customer service guys don't know if they have to charge GST (which they do). They said they didn't so I sent a money order that didn't have it then they wouldn't give up the domain cause my money order didn't have it. So I sent another one, Expresspost two day delivery signature required and they(Pool) lost it. COuldn't find it. Tried to fax them copies of the expresspost waybill with their employees signature and a photocopy of the moneyorder, their damn fax was busy the entire day!! I kid you not!! They said there was nothing wrong with it! It was a very frustrating experience.>:(

They are lucky they are very good at catching drops. It's their only saving grace, IMO.

Rant over.

I skipped this weeks TBR, although I see quite a few good names made it through and are available for hand-regging. Maybe if I get bored this weekend I'll take a 2nd look.

While pool is great at catching dropping ca's they suck at service. It's almost midnight here, still no email from the registrars that got me domains this week and nothing from CIRA. My traffic domain is sitting with pool's dns while I lose the money it would be making. Still no email from last week's registrar. They used to send this stuff fairly quickly - it's nice to know who/how to contact for changes during the first 30 days. I believe most are like me - after 30 immediately transfer to our favorite registrar.

And now that their fees are going back up to $60 US I don't think I will even bother with them for any marginal domain name.

Steven, the 8/26 tbr was the last one eligible for the half price offer. If it's your first time backordering at Pool, also keep in mind that all of their billing is in USD.

If it's one thing Pool is know for among ca'ers, it's the length of time it takes for them to get a name to you. (Though they have no problem billing you right away) But lately, it's taking even longer than usual - like Whitebark, I'm still waiting on a name from the previous tbr session as well.

It's almost becoming a joke - pool's service. Still nothing from CIRA or the registrars for two more domains from this past Wednesday's drop. Meanwhile I have a mean traffic domain sitting with their dns. Betcha anything google will come along, see the pool site and index that or drop it all together. I may not even get a chance to save the PR/rankings etc - let alone just park it and reap the traffic!

Now that they are $60 US again, the domain had better be top-notch or I won't even bother. Sibername can have all my business - at least they pony up the domain right away! Longest I ever had to wait there was two days.

Sept 02 TBR

Well this is clearly the best drop of the summer. Loads of quality keyword names dropping, several very lucrative niches and a lot of dictionaries with a lot of favourable search stats. There is a lot of good value here, in fact there are so many good names this week that a substantial amount should make it through to hand register.

Also introducing a weekly award I call "The Dropsies". Each week I will award a "Dropsie" to the absolute worst name being released. I have a lot of experience in this area as you can see here. uthfgytfytfy.com

Lets get to it.

This week's winner:
BallCaps.ca - 43400 global,3100 local,$.84 CPC
BaseballCap.ca - 301000,12100,$.89
BaseballCaps.ca - 246000,6600,$.90
BaseballHat.ca - 135000,14800,$.97
BaseballHats.ca - 135000,6600,$1.12

I love .ca's. Another strong niche dropping. Just buy the names and find a backend partner, or if your a developer looking for a stand alone business this is it. Potential of 516000 searchers per annum looking for a product that sells between $20 and $150. This niche even lends itself to the leasing option nicely.

Keyword Domains: - in alphabetic order.
AffiliateMoney.ca - 40500,1600,$3.11
ArtWorks.ca - 255000,9800,$.85
BadCreditAutoLoan.ca - 49500,1900,$10.21

CaribeanCruise - 14800,1300,$4.37
Caribbean.ca - 1000000,90500,$1.70. This name should rightly have been this week's winner but I'm biased, I don't ever let the sun hit my bald spot. Still the strongest keyword name dropping this week and a strong, strong buy.
