Do new gTLD investors buy domains from the aftermarket?

I would like to focus on hand regs, but it is getting more and more difficult, gaps are closing pretty fast
So in 2017 it is aftermarket for me (best source - sellers here at NamePros)

I like keeping a diverse portfolio. Focusing only on hand-regs gives you tunnel vision, I think its wise to keep a pulse on all markets. But since my forte is name creation, the bulk of my names are hand-crafted.

That begs the question: does buying from the registry count as aftermarket too or handreg ?
And if the registration price (and possibly the renewal price as well) is premium (higher than standard price), does that qualify as aftermarket or regular handreg ?
The question is relevant since most noteworthy sales are reported by the registries.
In other words: what is the definition of aftermarket in this context ?

Aftermarket = resale from any entity
Handreg = first-time registration from registrar

Even if it has a premium renewal or initial registration fee, it shouldn't be considered aftermarket until after initial creation. With some of those registrar price tags, it may seem otherwise, for sure.
