I am going to tell you about a gigantic project going on in Abu Dhabi called Reem Island. This project is so huge 3 of the largest developers in the UAE(Tamouh, Sorouh, and Reem Investments) are building it. It is even bigger than The Pearl Qatar project that appeared in this forum last June.

- Reem Island is a combined residential, commercial and business project being built on a natural island off the coast of Abu Dhabi City and will be directly connected to Abu Dhabi City by a number of bridges. The location of Reem Island is only 20 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport.

- Reem Island will accomodate and estimated 280,000 residents. Some estimates go as high as 350,000!!

- Reem Island will contain Numerous hotels, resorts, beaches, spas, shopping malls, restaurants, medical clinics, many, many businesses, a 27 hole golf course, etc., etc.

- Just one of the business projects on Reem Island is Addax Port. By itself Addax is a massive port project which will contain 5 huge towers: an office tower and 4 other residential towers. And this is just one "small" part of Reem Island.

- Of course there will be tons of luxury condos and homes and villas, etc. to accomodate the huge number of residents of Reem Island.

- Reem Island will eventually be the "center" of Abu Dhabi which is the Richest of all the Emirates. Even richer than Dubai.

- Do a google search to get lots more info on Reem Island and here are a few sites to get you started: ReemIsland.com, AddaxPort.com, ReemInvestments.com. There are many more.

- There are still many good names left. I picked up:

ReemIslandProperties.com

ReemProperties.com

...but there are still many more left. As a domainer if you miss out on Reem Island you will never forgive yourself. Good luck and I hope this post was of help to you.

Updates

Here is an interesting article that talks about how RAK is following the path that Dubai has created called "Ras Al Khaimah to emulate the success of Dubai according to Select Property."

http://www.webwire.com/ViewPressRel.asp?aId=53205

Here is a great article which compares 3 major UAE island projects- Reem Island, The World and Sharjah's Nujoom Island - to one another:

http://www.ameinfo.com/138446.html

This next article asks the question: will Abu Dhabi become a global financial center? Abu Dhabi is also compared to Dubai:

The Ras Al Khaimah Mega-Projects: WOW RAK

No kidding, WOW RAK is really the name of this RAK Mega-Project! WOW is a gigantic theme/entertainment park and some think it is being built as competition to Dubai's Dubailand Mega-Project. WOW RAK will span 120 acres and be located in the Khor Qurm region of RAK.

Shaikh Saud of RAK:

"The project would contribute to the comprehensive development boom currently taking place in RAK and would boost the tourism facilities available in the Emirate."

Dr. Massaad, CEO of RAKIA:

"The project is strategically located near the upcoming mega-property developments like Al Marjan Island, Al Hamra Village and Mina Al Arab and would complement the ongoing expansion of hotel infrastructure in the Emirate which is adding up around 8000 hotel rooms."

WOW RAK will feature:

- Oasis Aqua Park

- Planet Earth Theme Park

- Mall of Ras Al Khaimah

Oasis Aqua Park will have a plethora of water attractions including the largest manmade waterfall in the world; coral reefs; 26 different waterslides; Lazy River for relaxing, etc.

Planet Earth Theme Park will contain: The Mountain Zone which will feature roller coaster through the mountains as well as a Snow House area with winter theme attractions and lots of manmade snow ala Ski Dubai; The Oceanic Zone which will have a variety of water themed rides and exhibits; The Desert Zone which will be themed on local desert attractions.

The Mall will contain 120 retail outlets, indoor golf, 4D movie theatre, bowling, etc.

WOW RAK will be a fabulous RAK Mega-Project that will greatly contribute to the expansion of the Emirate. Read more here:

The Ras Al Khaimah Mega-Projects: UAE Spaceport

I have been saying in many of my posts here that the UAE will end up being a world 200 years in the future when all these Mega-Projects are complete. What does a world of the future need? A spaceport naturally. And of course the UAE with their great NO LIMITS attitude is building one!! In RAK!

Sheikh Al Qasimi of RAK:

"I am proud to announce Ras Al Khaimah as the site where suborbital space travel will begin and flourish. Space Adventures is the pioneer of space tourism, which is why we signed an agreement with them nearly a year ago and began this project. After we initiate operations here we look forward to expanding operations outside of the UAE. In this regard I would like to announce that we have committed an additional $30Million of funding for global spaceport development. We are most excited about spearheading this multi-billion dollar industry."

Amazing! No Limits! As noted above RAK has taken a company called Space Adventures as their partner in this project. Another space adventure company, Virgin Galactic, owned by billionaire Richard Branson, is considering locating in the UAE.

UPDATE: Dubai

Here is a very good article about the "Green Countdown" in Dubai. Remember a few posts back I noted how ALL construction is going green in Dubai by January 2008. This article covers what is going on to prepare for this big change.

It is interesting how two very, very HOT trends - Dubai/UAE and Go Green - are merging here.

Gulf Construction Boom: 2837 Projects Worth $2.4 Trillion!!

The construction boom in the Gulf Region of the Middle East is mind boggling: 2837 projects are underway (with more coming) worth a total of $2.4 Trillion!

Who do you think has the biggest Mega-Project going in that region? Dubai? NO! Abu Dhabi? NO! SAUDI ARABIA, with the King Abdullah Economic City worth $120Billion. Note: Shortly I will be adding Saudi Arabia to this thread and I shall begin covering their Mega-Projects. Saudi is undergoing a construction boom to rival that of the UAE and this is open field for domainers.

Who do you think has the second biggest Mega-Project going? Dubai? NO! Abu Dhabi? NO! KUWAIT, with the Silk City Project worth $86Billion.

Dubai comes in at number 3 with Dubailand valued at $60Billion.

The Ras Al Khaimah Mega-Projects: Saraya Islands

Saraya Islands will be a beautiful residential/tourist destination in a fabulous location of RAK situated between the Arabian Gulf and the Hajjar Mountains. This setting reminds me of Santa Barbara, California which is also located between the sea and mountains. What is especially nice here is that eventhough the islands are in a very pristine area they are just minutes from RAK International Airport, and Dubai is also close by adding further value.

"The project is a conception of shared visions to propel RAK into a cosmopolitan tourism destination and a new alternative in the UAE, offering exceptional tourism products that will illuminate the area's natural landscape and attraction."

The Saraya Islands will offer:

- A variety of hotels each having a different theme

- Waterfront luxury villas and apartments

- Townhouses on the water with their own piers

- Amusement waterpark and entertainment village

- Spas, shops of all kinds, restaurants

- Planetarium and cultural center

- Sports facilities, bike and walking trails, navigation training institute

- Sports center

- etc., etc.

Saraya Islands will be yet another great RAK destination. Read more and see it here:

Biggest UAE Fear: That The Whole Thing Will Implode

I like to push it out of my mind every time it pops in. Do you ever ask yourself - as I try not to - aren't all these incredible Mixed Use Mega-Projects just so amazing that the whole Mega-Project boom could one day go bust? One giant project after another, each one more incredible than the last. And...what if one day...like all booms...the whole thing...IMPLODES.

Here is a good article about this called "Developer's transient obsession" that I just read in Arabian Business. The final sentence of the article: "Mixed use projects may be flying now but they can't defy gravity forever." Don't get scared. The Emirates/Gulf region is AWASH IN CASH and will be for a long time. In fact the UAE/Gulf is probably the best place in the entire world to be investing in-- even better than China or India! I don't expect to see any kind of significant downturn for a long, long time. Read the article and post your opinions.

http://www.arabianbusiness.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=502957&newsletter=1

That picture in the article is just a small part of the biggest Mega-Project of them all-- King Abdullah Economic City which I will cover in a future post here.

It is very possible, it takes very little action to have a massive impact on any tourist destination.

I really hope they do manage to build a modern paradise but it will take far more than just throwing money at it IMO

They also need to quickly put a good legal system in place !

"However, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai’s ruler and United Arab Emirates prime minister, in April said the justice ministry was languishing 20 years behind other government departments, calling for the introduction of more modern systems and urging the “highest standards of transparency and accountability”."
