Entered in this vibrant sector after selling my personal domain to an end user in Mid May 2020 and got introduced to the world of domaining. During the peak of pandemic, used series of lockdown periods constructively & building small portfolio. Found few good and very supportive friends here who helped me in diversifying my portfolio with some incredible 4L domains. Last year I also entered in two interesting & expensive experiments i.e. fighting with huge domains & finding best parking strategy.

This year, I will focus on Sell and improving my portfolio quality by replacing sold domains with high value better quality new domains without stretching my total portfolio size.

Wish you all A Very Happy & Prosperous New Year!

    Not really but:

Will increase the prices of my good domains.
Will be trying more "make offer" landers as I always put a bin.

2021 is be a busy year.

I want to buy a few premium names and build out a premium domain portfolio of a few one word .coms, some two word .com and some stellar .co, .io and GLTDs with great synergies.

I also want try to build out a 5000 portfolio of brandable domain names on SH and BB.. Since I only started in 2020, I only managed to get to 150 mark so I have a long way to go and I need to find a way to scale it. I still lack the skills to pick good 2 word names, so I will be relying on portfolio buys and better quality auction names for a while.

Well, aim for the sky :)

I'm consolidating my entire portfolio at Dynadot in 2021 and will make a start with investing in .nl domains as 2020 was the year my family and I moved to the Netherlands and the domain name aftermarket for the .nl ccTLD is very mature.

    Happy New Year everyone!

What things are you looking to do differently in 2021 when it comes to your portfolio and strategy?

Experimenting with different style sales landers, for example, from basic to elaborate and using old school hit meter.

    Cheers

More focus on quality names for me this year. My portfolio is comprised mostly of GD closeouts, speculative hand regs, and auction names that I bought for <$150 over the past few years.

My ultimate goal with domains is to build a portfolio where I can more or less set it and forget it (with the odd review for price revisions, etc.). This means investing in names that are a no-brainer to keep long-term.

80% of the time I spend on domaining should be devoted to two things:
    • Finding good opportunities for smart purchases of quality names
    • Targeted, customized outbound of generic EMDs
Good fortune to all this year!

The majority of my goals for 2021 are pretty much the same as 2020. Continue downsizing my portfolio, not buy anymore names, add more BIN's to my domains, and focus on developing.

The only thing different in 2021 is maybe building business relationships with other domainers with similar interests. I have my own projects but wouldn't mind working on something with someone else. I've considered this over the years but never really put myself out there. Who knows, maybe 2021 will be different.

This thread is giving great insight. Want to know if it's better to put BIN prices or "make an offer"? Here's the answer:
You want to know if it's better to put on marketplaces or to try to sell directly? Here's the definitive answer:
    Pretty clear, isn't it? ;)

    My "Do Differently in 2021"

I plan to have my domain outbound marketing strategy up and running. I just learned of this industry three years ago, and it's still the craziest industry I've ever had the pleasure/displeasure to know. I've never understood the traditional business model used by a select few domainers, and the more I learn about it the less I like it.

I see the domain industry much like the debt buying industry that I'm very familiar with. The business model in the debt buying industry is to buy debt for 5 cents on the dollar, and then use your skills tools etc. to recover 15 cents on the dollar over a period of three years.

Top professional debt collectors recover sometimes 25 and 30 cents on the dollar, and they make a commission of 20% of what they collect. Some of the top pros in the field make over 200K a year.

I already have a portfolio of about 1,200 domains of which my/our sales people can choose which ones they're best at selling. Sort of like a real estate agent who is best at selling starter homes, and another agent is best at selling luxury homes, and another one is best at selling foreclosures.

Having been successful in the debt recovery business, I know this model works for debt collection and I have every reason in the world to believe it will work for the domain industry.

Finally, i can't do this all by myself, but I've targeted a couple of individuals who I believe can help. The stars are aligning as I key this, and I can only hope and yes pray my plans come to fruition.

2020 was pretty bad for me in terms of sails... reached a point some time in the summer where it was so dry that I started to think I was just not getting it and wasting money and wanted to drop everything.

Then the fall came and same.

But i kept reminding myself that we're in a pandemic and that the patient investors are who make it. So I kept renewing faithfully.

I ended up selling a cannabis domain for like high xxx sometime late fall... might have another sail.

I then did the math... and realize why HD and other large whales keep on renewing and acquiring:

In a 10-year span, you only need to sell 10% of your names for $2,500 each to make 3x your renewals.

If, for example, you have 800 domains, so that's $64,000 for 10 years. So selling even just 40 domains in 10 years for $2,500 each is $100,000. And that is only 5% but is way above the renewal cost.

So I'm just going to keep renewing.

Thanks for a great topic, @equity78

My list of 'plans" for 2021 is large, but here are some....
    1. I plan to finally give the brandable marketplaces a try for some domain names. I have at this point never submitted a single name to them.:xf.eek:
    2. I hope to put more effort and attention into .ca, especially single word and short brandable.
    3. I resolve to finally make sure all my names are listed with nice landers.:xf.smile:
    4. I think descriptions and presentation can help, but plan on making my descriptions much shorter.:guilty:
    5. I am going to try my hand at writing some articles about names and brands for a broader audience outside the domain community.
    6. I plan to have more 'niches" (contrary to what I said a year ago) but they will be narrower and focussed.B-)
    7. I plan to expand my learning in some topics related to domain names by more reading and MOOCs, perhaps intellectual property law, contract law, and branding principles.
    8. I plan to continue to acquire through a mix of NameLiquidate, NamePros acquisitions, registrar marketplaces, and hand registrations, and expand to one more technique I don't currently use for acquisitions.
    9. I started building a portfolio of single word .cc early in 2020, and plan to continue to grow that. I plan to keep adding some new gTLDs but really focus on quality one word matches. If I have success with acceptance of brandables, want to build brandable .com to some degree. I still like domain phrases, and see continuing to expand that. As opportunities arise, will replenish .co in portfolio. I still have less than a dozen, but grew my .org holdings in 2020 and plan to keep doing so. I probably will hold more .link at end of year.
    10. There are many sectors/niches I plan to emphasize, but learning, lifestyle, health, the peer and sharing economy, new commerce/delivery, nanotechnology, biotechnology, space, mental wellness, creativity and innovation are high on my list. Unfortunately several of the hottest sectors of late I know nothing about and have not invested in :xf.frown: for several reasons.
I have one more goal, that may be memorable (hint :-,) if it really happens, but it is a major undertaking and don't want to mention unless I really am embarking on it.

Have a happy and prosperous 2021 everyone, and avoid those pitfalls (hint 2 :-,) along the way. May all your domain investments be catching the right trains in a timely manner, and avoiding domain trainwrecks.

Sorry for writing at such length. I was mainly writing for myself, and actually it was a useful exercise to clarify my goals.

    Bob

Bob is that a one year plan or a 10 year? :p Don't put too much on your plate, no room for dessert.

But best- seems for you 24 hours in a day is but a formality. Looking forward to more of the good stuff, broadening your audience I don't think will be too much of a reach for you. Happy New Year friend.

It is a one year plan, but I don't do 9 out of every 10 things I plan:xf.wink:, so all is good! (but thanks for your advice and kind words)

You know, since I have been back this has been my primary objective: LIST EVERYWHERE!!!

About 10 years ago I bought a bunch of domains, parked on Sedo and took a 10 year nap! Lol

One original? idea I had when determining which landing page (i.e. Nameservers) to use is this.

Think about WHO your likely buyer or end user would be.

Are they comfortable submitting an offer via an online form?

Would this person even know what a Registrar is?

If not, you may want to direct that domain to Afternic NS3/NS4 due to GoDaddy Logo, Phone Number. Contact with a Rep who can set this buyer up.

End user an online business or tech company? Direct to DAN, Epik,

    International Player? Maybe Sedo...

So, to answer the OP question I am going to: 1. List in EVERY Marketplace I cam
    2. Seriously create Buyer Personas for each domain I have listed and let that determine whete it's pointed, how I market it and to WHOM I market it

Ok, let's say I list at Afternic, and I use ns3.afternic.com and ns4.afternic.com .. then what,.. would buyers directly make offers, or would I still get price requests only? .. I prefer to deal with endusers in realtime. ..Buyers will go to GD, and a GD agent will make a price request at AN, I will respond to it, and my response (prices) will go to GD agent and not to enduser directly. too complicated and risky process.
Also I don't want agents to delay those price requests just because the domain is about to expire, and dropcatch would be more profitable.
