Domaining 2021 For some 5 or 6 years of middling .coms or new gtlds has not panned out. Some have told me they really wished they had abandoned domain names and put all their time and money into crypto. 2020 certainly has been a trying year around the globe in dealing with things much more important than domain names. But this is a domain blog so I am going to keep the topic on domain … [Read more...]

I am going to keep the topic on domain

-portfolio management
-aftermarket listings
-less drops, more flips
-no drama.

... that's what I hope to differently in 2021 when it comes to domaining.

I would like to start actively buying more again, unfortunately the vast majority of auctions at public venues are going for prices that don't really make sense with the math of an average portfolio turnover.

Outside that I want to explore some new lander options.

Incorporate more BINs on all my landers;

Love this straight-forward way of business.

No games.

I am used to sticking to either Dan or Afternic landing pages for long stretches of time spanning 2 years and above.

This year, I might try switching it up every 4-6 months and see if that has any effect on my STR (both positive and negative)

What things are you looking to do differently in 2021 when it comes to your portfolio and strategy?

Will you be spending more time and money on domain names or less?
Differently? I'll actually finish building my portfolio system and finally launch it :)

I'll likely spend less money buying new domains and a lot more time marketing them which should result in a lot more sales.

I'm consolidating my entire portfolio at Dynadot in 2021 and will make a start with investing in .nl domains as 2020 was the year my family and I moved to the Netherlands and the domain name aftermarket for the .nl ccTLD is very mature.

Happy New Year everyone!

Going to try to remember to remove my mask earlier.. wearing it in front of my computer and realizing my anti-virus program doesn't work any better..

Nice- it's a great feeling when your own thing is complete.
I'll likely spend less money buying new domains and a lot more time marketing them which should result in a lot more sales.
This year I deviated from my focus on using my own landers to putting some names on marketplaces, and it was my worst year ever. But perhaps you mean marketing in terms of social media etc. Hopefully it works out for you, and would be glad to hear so.

I think in this biz hearing about the methods/strategies we use to sell our names is rewarding but also almost a handicap. Just because not everything works the same for everyone, but the only way to find out is to try. Some names might do better in a setting than others of different caliber.

It's easy to get stuck doing something in a certain way and expect different results. So I suppose for 2021 I'll keep that thought foremost not just for domaining but for everything.

Focusing on higher quality domains which I am willing to hold long-term. Less chickensh##
Just sold a domain for 27K, bought it for $850 a few months ago. Realized that a good domain sells by itself.
On a side note - will continue to keep buying physical gold and silver to protect against a possible inflation/ hyperinflation, so I can continue the domain game and scale up.

Thanks for a great topic, @equity78

My list of 'plans" for 2021 is large, but here are some....
  1. I plan to finally give the brandable marketplaces a try for some domain names. I have at this point never submitted a single name to them.:xf.eek:
  2. I hope to put more effort and attention into .ca, especially single word and short brandable.
  3. I resolve to finally make sure all my names are listed with nice landers.:xf.smile:
  4. I think descriptions and presentation can help, but plan on making my descriptions much shorter.:guilty:
  5. I am going to try my hand at writing some articles about names and brands for a broader audience outside the domain community.
  6. I plan to have more 'niches" (contrary to what I said a year ago) but they will be narrower and focussed.B-)
  7. I plan to expand my learning in some topics related to domain names by more reading and MOOCs, perhaps intellectual property law, contract law, and branding principles.
  8. I plan to continue to acquire through a mix of NameLiquidate, NamePros acquisitions, registrar marketplaces, and hand registrations, and expand to one more technique I don't currently use for acquisitions.
  9. I started building a portfolio of single word .cc early in 2020, and plan to continue to grow that. I plan to keep adding some new gTLDs but really focus on quality one word matches. If I have success with acceptance of brandables, want to build brandable .com to some degree. I still like domain phrases, and see continuing to expand that. As opportunities arise, will replenish .co in portfolio. I still have less than a dozen, but grew my .org holdings in 2020 and plan to keep doing so. I probably will hold more .link at end of year.
  10. There are many sectors/niches I plan to emphasize, but learning, lifestyle, health, the peer and sharing economy, new commerce/delivery, nanotechnology, biotechnology, space, mental wellness, creativity and innovation are high on my list. Unfortunately several of the hottest sectors of late I know nothing about and have not invested in :xf.frown: for several reasons.
I have one more goal, that may be memorable (hint :-,) if it really happens, but it is a major undertaking and don't want to mention unless I really am embarking on it.

Have a happy and prosperous 2021 everyone, and avoid those pitfalls (hint 2 :-,) along the way. May all your domain investments be catching the right trains in a timely manner, and avoiding domain trainwrecks.

Sorry for writing at such length. I was mainly writing for myself, and actually it was a useful exercise to clarify my goals.

not really.....I have my Defi, mushroom and tech domains, and a few others plus some dog sh& ....I have a website going live with more in the pipeline

so......all good

Fu-k predictions, what if's and what could be.....if something happens......it happens...I'm not financially dependent on domains....I want to invest in certain areas at the right price ( Geo's :xf.wink: ), will probably buy some domains that end up as a waste of money, some might be gold....but hey ho.....it will not break the bank

The hobby will continue into 2021......more focus on domains with personal end user development might be the name of the game for me personally....we will see......

each to their own......

2020 was a big year for me in as much as i finally found a broker

After trying to find a broker since about 2012 with no success and i only found a broker after my phone broke and i could not receive 2fa from godaddy on broken phone and godaddy not being able to verify me and me not beibg able to renew my domain names so i lost about
60 donain names in my portfolio which i wasnt best pleased with as i had to let my domain names expire and try to buy them back for reg fee and i managed to buy a few of my lost domain names back but then i decided to change registrar which was a breath of fresh air and after trying to get a broker for 8 years at godaddy with no success i got a broker with current registrar within a day of asking for a broker which is a huge relief

Because having a broker i can now do what i do best which is have tech venture ideas and buy the domain names of my tech venture ideas and let the broker do what they do best eg negotiating the best price for my donain names and at some point a sale will add liquidity to my domain name investing hobby thus making my domain name profitable etc

And for some time now i have wanted to use my domain mames and my ability to swing trade options on the stockmarket to help those that are homeless and those living rv/vanlife in broken unreliable vehicles and struggling to get by in life and hoping to use my domain names to build a portfolio that enables me to do this although i would need to do outbound marketing for this but i have no interest in outbound marketing etc

Plus i would like to use some of my domain names to create a
Day trading fund
That would allow me to day trade the stockmarket to buy secondhand minivans for people to live in to stop them wasting money they cannot afford wasting that money payibg rent and ibstead using that money to pay off their debys and live a debt free lifestyle which many in longterm debt can only dream of etc

That said i already know the organisations that i want to help that can make this vision a reality

I've started sorting names into tiers...pricing on top tier names (only a couple dozen) will get a monthly review of any BIN pricing that may be posted for a particular name (full retail with make offer option).

Tier 2 two (a couple hundred) will get a review every 4 months and adjust any BIN now pricing that may be posted (full retail with make offer option).

Tier 3 (many hundreds) will get a look-see every 6 months or so and adjust BIN's accordingly (only best half will have full pricing with make offer...the others will be well priced with buy now only).

Tier 4 (way more than I care to admit) will have bottom dollar BIN's with no make offer. If they do not sell within 1-2 years, they will drop and/or I may give them away here.

NO BUYING CRAP NAMES IN 21

More focus on quality names for me this year. My portfolio is comprised mostly of GD closeouts, speculative hand regs, and auction names that I bought for <$150 over the past few years.

My ultimate goal with domains is to build a portfolio where I can more or less set it and forget it (with the odd review for price revisions, etc.). This means investing in names that are a no-brainer to keep long-term.

80% of the time I spend on domaining should be devoted to two things:
  • Finding good opportunities for smart purchases of quality names
  • Targeted, customized outbound of generic EMDs
Good fortune to all this year!

My "Do Differently in 2021"

I plan to have my domain outbound marketing strategy up and running. I just learned of this industry three years ago, and it's still the craziest industry I've ever had the pleasure/displeasure to know. I've never understood the traditional business model used by a select few domainers, and the more I learn about it the less I like it.

I see the domain industry much like the debt buying industry that I'm very familiar with. The business model in the debt buying industry is to buy debt for 5 cents on the dollar, and then use your skills tools etc. to recover 15 cents on the dollar over a period of three years.

Top professional debt collectors recover sometimes 25 and 30 cents on the dollar, and they make a commission of 20% of what they collect. Some of the top pros in the field make over 200K a year.

I already have a portfolio of about 1,200 domains of which my/our sales people can choose which ones they're best at selling. Sort of like a real estate agent who is best at selling starter homes, and another agent is best at selling luxury homes, and another one is best at selling foreclosures.

Having been successful in the debt recovery business, I know this model works for debt collection and I have every reason in the world to believe it will work for the domain industry.

Finally, i can't do this all by myself, but I've targeted a couple of individuals who I believe can help. The stars are aligning as I key this, and I can only hope and yes pray my plans come to fruition.

Trying to focus less on quantity and more on quality. The numbers game can work if you have an eye for it but it's better to look at upcoming renewal fees and instinctively want to pay them rather than feel 'iffy' or about them.

If I had been buying bitcoin in 2010-15 instead of spending that money on .TV and TV.com acquisitions and renewals most which I eventually dropped....

Everything has its own time. Who guessed an 11yrs old bitcoin will beat thousands yrs old Gold? Crypto currency was fantastic this past few weeks:happy:.

In terms of domaining, be very selective and hang on for the right time. Crypto investment may soon start down falls due to very high optimism, and ppl will start looking for alternative opportunities, like stocks, real estate, domain names, etc.
my 2 cents,

Entered in this vibrant sector after selling my personal domain to an end user in Mid May 2020 and got introduced to the world of domaining. During the peak of pandemic, used series of lockdown periods constructively & building small portfolio. Found few good and very supportive friends here who helped me in diversifying my portfolio with some incredible 4L domains. Last year I also entered in two interesting & expensive experiments i.e. fighting with huge domains & finding best parking strategy.

This year, I will focus on Sell and improving my portfolio quality by replacing sold domains with high value better quality new domains without stretching my total portfolio size.

Wish you all A Very Happy & Prosperous New Year!
