Now that .APP is rolling out I thought I'd share a little of our position in .APP domains. I'd love to know what others are doing.

We budgeted just shy of $100k for .APP domain registrations. Several we've already acquired and several we've missed. I'll update our pickups as I can without giving away our position. So far I will share that we picked up:
  • Wedding.app

Trademark Claim
I do have a domain that we registered that has to pass their trademark claim process... it is very generic, not sure who decided to try to call it a trademark, we shall see.

Our Why
To sum it up, Google is our why. I became a domainer back in 2000, when the domain really mattered in SEO. My hunch is that Google won't be able to resist giving some type of preference to quality .APP domain.

Even a small advantage in the SERs or even the Play App Search results, make generic .APP domains valuable.

You can simple check the renewal fee at another registrar. The price you have to pay to transfer-in to new registrar = the renewal fee.
Thanks! I hadn't thought of that, that's a fun way to find out how much they're costing people. I'll be doing that to a few domains!

Am I correct... google wouldn't have any issues with the domain forwarding to a https site. Correct?

The site itself must have a certificate before a browser will let you pull it up. Therefore it won't redirect without a SSL. (or your forwarding service providing one)

Perfect. Thanks.

Makes me wonder about setting up SSL. The service I use needs to have the domain pointing already. I may have to test it out later.

Correct, me if I'm wrong but it appears on Godaddy every .app domains comes with free SSL Cert? If, so does anyone know if the SSL cert. costs extra 1 year from now (at same time domains up to renew)?

The documentation (during checkout) strongly suggested that the FREE SSL

Agreed. Registrants need to configure SSL for their .APP purchases. Without that, you're not going to get very far, being one of the key points of using an .APP domain. The browser and visitor know that the domain name is secure and not redirected off to god knows where, installing god knows what.

SSL set-up with GoDaddy is straight forward, complete within 2-3 minutes. This is how the net is involving, moving away from "not secure" web content, so if you're not accustom to installing certificates...it's worth learning.

.app is one of those extentions i am not to sure of mainly due to some crazy renewal prices and i have noticed a good few sites that use apps not registering their namexx .app even though they are low price.

so makes me think is it for investing or developing

yes there are plenty of those, i was talking about the renewal fee one word names that have any real commercial meaning
as for those $14 - 20 ones yep one or two i might buy but when it really comes down to it how many of these do you think will be a good investment ?

What a lot of people aren’t realizing is with this .app extension it will make a lot of consumers feel more comfortable and aware based off marketing that the content they are viewing related to a mobile app.

Plus the abilities to put pixel within the .app to track who clicks and their behavior and location allows us to build lookalikes where as referring people directly to App Store doesn’t give us that.

Any app developer would choose .app over .com for the first time ever as it makes the product so much more appealing to advertise.

As you see on social media people advertise their apps as “calm app” “airtime app” “uber app” “tinder app” it can now be put together with meaning. Consumers will see .app more than ever and any other tld when it comes to social media advertisements aswell
Consumers are clueless

Google was pretty good at isolating premium keywords, and even the plurals under them. With other gtlds $250+ renewal domains have proven to be a tough sell. The premium renewals was probably meant to ward of speculators, and offset some of that huge acquisition cost.

Well I have socialmedia.app, tix.app, ivf.app, maui.app that are a few that are $20. I had a list of tons more like tux.app, pho.app, deliveries.app, etc that were all $20.

Mommy.app, puppy.app, babies.app were all $50 I believe. Concerts.app, festivals.app, mma.app, baseball.app and more were $100. Tickets.app, events.app, ultrasound.app were $250. This is just off the top of my head but there were tons tons more at these prices if you dug deep. And I was only searching really the industries that I know.
