Now that .APP is rolling out I thought I'd share a little of our position in .APP domains. I'd love to know what others are doing.

We budgeted just shy of $100k for .APP domain registrations. Several we've already acquired and several we've missed. I'll update our pickups as I can without giving away our position. So far I will share that we picked up:
  • Wedding.app

Trademark Claim
I do have a domain that we registered that has to pass their trademark claim process... it is very generic, not sure who decided to try to call it a trademark, we shall see.

Our Why
To sum it up, Google is our why. I became a domainer back in 2000, when the domain really mattered in SEO. My hunch is that Google won't be able to resist giving some type of preference to quality .APP domain.

Even a small advantage in the SERs or even the Play App Search results, make generic .APP domains valuable.

Gotcha. I'm pretty sure Godaddy is auction which is why I got a few confirms and the others are all still pending. Like I said the 1api.net ones all show pending but the winner in my state so unless there's someone else that lives in my state and happened to register the same names and beat me so be it.

I got 50% of my pre-regs with name.com. None of them went to auction. I believe it is first-come, first-served basis.
This is GA phase.
Auctions are allowed only during Landrush.

Unless that's a .app thing you're wrong. I got a bunch of gtlds including mba.mba in a GA auction for GTlds

I don’t ever remember going to auction at name, enom yes thru NameJet. Name was first come first serve.

I'm never pre-reg again. Though I did pre-reg some .ARAB ones. I think the middle east is going to eat those up. I'll just try to stick to .COM. The money is there. Unfortunatley you'll probably need tons of money to get the money domains.

Godaddy, after all registrars got their domain will start getting. I pre reg a good one and didn't get (somebody else got it). Hand reg another 1 and didn't get(it's available but they never assign me even after 20mins of reg).

So i went to uniregistry and reg 3 there, including those of GD which were still available.

Disappointed with GD really.

Here is explained...
Were no auctions even during Landrush (EAP), just various fixed prices.

Where do you see anything about no auctions? My rep at Godaddy said they do auctions if two or more people register during the same period so not sure if Google is saying something different.

This is stated by Google officially at https://www.registry.google - no any auctions, fixed/Tier prices and that's all.
If GoDaddy is running some auctions for the domains they got - this is their own "scam".

I saw yesterday at goodaddy that if their were multiple pre reg it would go to an auction

Godaddy has always done that with multiple pre-reg, Some auctions have gone well over what it would have cost in the previous day's EAP... that is why the EAP pay to play system is in place. It is a huge cash cow, pure profit, and high margin for both parties.

Enom used to send multiple pre-reg to namejet auctions.

Name was first come first serve, unless it was landrush, then it was namejet auction.

Godaddy had a glitch about a week or two ago where any domain was available to register. I typed in a bunch of LLL.com's and it showed them as available for $11.00. I was able to put it in my cart but of course, I couldn't check out, but damn did I try. They would have been sold within 15 minutes too. I'm not greedy.

What a lot of people aren’t realizing is with this .app extension it will make a lot of consumers feel more comfortable and aware based off marketing that the content they are viewing related to a mobile app.

Plus the abilities to put pixel within the .app to track who clicks and their behavior and location allows us to build lookalikes where as referring people directly to App Store doesn’t give us that.

Any app developer would choose .app over .com for the first time ever as it makes the product so much more appealing to advertise.

As you see on social media people advertise their apps as “calm app” “airtime app” “uber app” “tinder app” it can now be put together with meaning. Consumers will see .app more than ever and any other tld when it comes to social media advertisements aswell

I'm sure there will be some nice aftermarket sales for the really super premium ones like crypto, casino, office, bet, cam, blockchain, coin, etc .app, but there can be some danger with 2000 renewal fees, however, the persons who purchased those high-priced domains probably don't worry about high renewal fees.

I imagine we'll see a high flip within 2 weeks --- ____app purchased for 9500 USD and sold for 55000 USD.
But I don't foresee hundreds of flips like these . We'll see.

One cannot oversee a critical point. Today Android controls almost 80% of the smartphone market share. Effectively, Android controls almost 80% of the apps market. Since .app and Andriod is controlled by Google, I am confident they would take steps to ensure they mutually benefit and, .app leads the developer market.

This is the one big difference between .app TLD and other TLDs

Interesting thought about the premium renewal domains. I haven't seen it possible to let a potential buyer know what the premium renewal fee is on domains listed on auction websites. Is it possible? Or will it just be a surprise to whoever buys a premium priced name like crypto.app?

It would be a real shame if someone flipped it for a good price and then the buyer was surprised at the mad yearly renewal fee if it's not disclosed to them at auction.

It sounds like something that would need to be written into law to force sellers to reveal the renewal price to prevent people from getting stung.

Google wants to remain very fair and have allowed Apple to register over 70+ domains during sunrise to ensure collaboration on both counterparts for the app world. Very exciting times.

the cheapest registration for .app
OVH UK: Confusing with France lang and many failed reg: $10.32 USD
1&1 if you like them $12 usd
The one I used was Porkbun for $13.88 with free WHOIS privacy and the same for renewal (other than 1&1)

You can simple check the renewal fee at another registrar. The price you have to pay to transfer-in to new registrar = the renewal fee.
