You want to speak to smart people?

Now if you would just listen and learn from those smart people, then you might become one, one day too!

Good luck to you my friend :)

I think you gTLD hypesters need to listen and learn.

The MOST successful gTLD domainer that has come forth is @kohsamui. He does this FULL TIME with a portfolio consisting of only 50% gTLDs and he barely makes a living of it in THAILAND (KohSamui please correct any misconceptions I might have).

Many of us live in places with much higher living costs and could not make it of 2K per month and hence invest in other more liquid and profitable sectors.

Now if this does not speak volumes, I dont know what does.

In future this and that might happen, but do not delude yourself. Currently gTLDs are just not liquid. Fine if you are looking for a lottery ticket that might be drawn in 10 years, some people can afford that. But you will struggle to make a profit today.

Maybe better you ask me before guessing. D-:

My monthly expenses are actually higher than it was when I lived in Sweden, 13 years ago. They are currently far more than 2K USD per month.

I thought hookers are cheap there.

To be fair I was not guessing. All that info is taken from what you have made public. Although earning per month, was estimated by another member on the basis of your year to date earnings. If I remember correctly you mentioned you had a wife carrying some of the living costs?

I did also ask you to clarify. Care to?

I think the conversation you're looking for is this:

Going back to the profits you made this year with the new TLDs: An average profit of $11.5K per year comes down to less than $1K profit per month though. For me personally $1K profit a month wouldn't definitely not be enough to live (for someone doing this full-time).

Yes, true.

Fortunately, one of my favorite domain investment is .COM. I also make some passive income from my travel websites and have a hard working wife.

Oh. So it was more like 1K from new gTLDs..

I am not mocking you @kohsamui , you have my respect. You for one seem to be dedicated to treating these gTLDs as the volatile investments they are. But it is poignant that even with your smarts and time dedication, and even above average success rates, this is the best example we can find of a domainer having success in the gTLD sphere.

To turn the coin around, few .COM domainers make a profit. but I am convinced that it is a much safer bet even so.

  • A car here is often 2-3 more expensive than in the US and in Europe.
  • Electricity is often more expensive here than is the US and Europe.
  • Internet is often more expensive here than in the US and Europe.
  • Imported foods and drinks are often more expensive here than in the US and Europe.
  • Memberships at good gyms / fitness centers are often more expensive here than in US and Europe.
  • Electronics and computers are often more expensive than in US and in Europe.
  • Motorbikes 250 cc + are often more expensive than in the US and in Europe.
Cheap or rather cheap in Thailand:
  • Local food and beer
  • Accommodation
  • Non-brand clothing
  • Traveling with bus and some flights
  • Scooters / motorbikes with small engines
It's kind of funny when people presupposes that all expats in Thailand live in huts, rents a scooter, drinks local beer and eat mostly rice and chicken.

I do not do that. I personally know 3 smaller companies that moved from Denmark to Thailand to take advantage of lower living costs. They import their labour force from Denmark and set them up in Thailand.

It is significantly cheaper to do so. Even with the added costs to technology and added infrastructure costs to lay in fiber optics and power. I myself spent 4 months in Thailand and have somewhat of a realistic view of what the cost of living is. Its cheap.

EDIT
Also my friend that has very little spare income, bought a luxury apartment to rent out in Pattaya. I do not know of any other place he would be able to afford anything similar.

Nice, I hope you had a good vacation. I have been here about 16 years altogether and have been a co-owner of a Thai company since 2003. I have some clues too.

Ok, I just mentioned that accommodation is cheap here. Pattaya is much cheaper than most other tourist areas in Thailand, but you can also buy this house for 2,3 million dollars: http://www.real-samui-properties.com/detail.php?id=871

Ok, this is getting crazy off topic. Enough about Thailand from me.

.

I am sure you have more of an idea of what it costs to live in Thailand than I do. Likewise I am sure I have more of an idea of what it costs to live in Europe today than you do.

In Denmark a person working at the cash register in a supermarket makes 18K DKK => 2700 USD per month. They do not have a luxurious lifestyle. Not even close. You need double that to live in a house and have a family. Triple that to live in somewhat luxury.

Anyway. You are right, it is getting of-topic.

You: just dropped all .com-s, going for new gtld-s.
But personally I'm holding all my .coms (50% of porfoglio) and I'm holding all my new gTLDs (50% of portfoglio)
We have 2 different strategies: who knows what is the better strategy... ;)
Maybe both strategies are good... ;)

I am dropping about 20% of my new gTLDs and 20% of my .COM and 75% of my .ORG (mostly "chips"). At the same time I am buying new (and hopefully) better names.

about 1% of Alexa top 1 million are nGTLDs. Depending on your point of view you might interpret this as a negative/positive sign. I don't think these are exciting numbers after 2+ years but it's still relatively early.

"Randomly found", that's my point. I was pointing out that no one actually knows of a .live website without searching for it.
So next time someone asks @kn65 about .live websites... He now actually KNOWS of at least 10 .live sites "without searching for it" !
See, new gTLD awareness is spreading fast

After I saw "Randomly found" I didn't bother to read the list. Sorry ;)
