Im betting big bucks on VR domains have a great future and with the big boys buying up VR companies, mainstream is a stones throw away.....

Lots of VR+keyword.com taken years ago and I noticed this sale a week or so back -

VRTechnology.com $3688

This was a steel and I can soon see everything from VRPoker / VRCasinos / VRShopping / VRBrowsing / VRTours / VRWorlds / etc etc....having a high price tag even now at the start of VR hitting mainstream...

I have just paid $x,xxx for a name but will not be showcasing as the domain is in escrow at present....

Considering Zuckerberg quoted 10 years for VR to be totally mainstream, I feel you should be planning ahead for 5 years worth of renewals at a bare minimum. It's another good reason to focus on quality over quantity.

Personally, I try to think each domain costs me at least $50, and is likely to cost me more.

In 8 years, I would expect a market saturation level of over 70%. So I was not sure what he means by "mainstream'. But I think domain value will peak for the majority (bulk) of names in 5 years with mainly the many category killing names remaining to the high flyers.
The bulk of new start-ups should occur over the next 2-4 years.
At least, that is how my plans are plotted out by that timeline map.
Everyone should at least think about the implications of when those events will happen even if you disagree with my projections, they will happen sometime and have a effect on VR names.
Yes this will evolve and change and continue but nobody knows what those changes will be to buy for those niche's yet and they will not individually be as large.

Yeah I was but when they're told me they decided use another name (most likely they found an available name) I lost my luck :D

A lot of people have ideas including myself about what the future holds, which tech is going dominate supreme, what type domain syntax is going to win long term. But personally I don't care that Holo is going to be more massive than VR, I don't care that AR is going to be 100 billions times bigger than VR, I don't care that MR is going to be the new VR. All I care about is what is selling right now. Check NameBio.com, type in your tech of choice and count the number of sales. The tech that has the most amount of sales is what you should be focused on.

Also note this point that I feel a lot of people skip over. Just because a tech goes mainstream, it does not mean that domains with that tech in the name will sell like hotcakes. Yes, that is everyone's hope, but it's not a given.

VR in my opinion has been proven that it works in the domain name and there are numerous $$$$ sales plus 1000+ page VR thread to prove it.

I'm not saying that Holo/AR/MR domains won't sell, but if there isn't a buyout like there is with quality VR names right now. A company might come to you, offer $50 and when you say no, they will register another name for regfee.

Well said. You also have to remember that opinions are just that. I've actually stopped posting appraisal threads here on NP. A common fallacy I've found is that many domainers claim to be experts in niches they really know nothing about. I've had many a name valued at reg fee, or, described as a tough sell. Some of them they were right, others I sold via inbound inquiries. Sure they didn't make me rich but I got a nice ROI.

I've also sold a VR+keyword+keyword for high xxx. In that instance the name was more specific to that niche instead of the single keyword.

Do your homework, if you're confident there's a market for a specific name, then reg away. Sometimes very sellable names aren't so obvious, even to a trained and experienced eye. Research pays off big time in this industry.

I was laughed at by a few old timers on chat here on NP for grabbing Urban+"v++++r". I've had no less than 8 inbound leads on it, split 50/50 between resellers and end users. One prospect is due to return to me and I'm confident I'll sell at some point in the not so distant future.

Visit OculusVR.com. I suspect some will opt to go with or without, and with both. Most companies I've seen offering VR related services seem to be using VR in their domain.
