The biggest hype behind the iPhone is...surprise! Apple.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19377034/
Consumers, industry eagerly await iPhone
Hype around new Apple product; but its historical mark less evident

"The fact that it will be using a slower 2.5-generation network instead of a 3-G network might also hamper the experience of data transfers or Web access, though Gartenberg noted that itโ€™s not just the bandwidth that matters, but how well the handsetโ€™s software is designed to optimize the use of the bandwidth.

San Francisco network administrator Scott Buzzard, 31, says heโ€™s not tempted to trade in his Motorola Q โ€” a smart phone that the iPhone will be competing with โ€” anytime soon. He says the iPhoneโ€™s price is too high, and Apple is inexperienced in the cellular market. His biggest worry is the touch screen and the software that underpins it.

โ€œIt looks cool and Apple has historically made great products, but the iPhone sounds too robust for its capacity โ€” theyโ€™re packing too much into a phone,โ€ Buzzard said while shopping at the CompUSA store in San Francisco. โ€œI donโ€™t want to be the early adopter on an untested product.โ€

The concensus seems to be:

1. It looks cool
2. It looks cool
3. It looks cool

Give me $500 to spend at Macy's, and I can look really cool! Ever seen a polar bear dressed to the nines?

One of the best and most practical phones I have seen is one I just saw in wired magazine. It may be a Nokia Blackberry, it is marketed by Verizon, and...it is International. Price for the phone...$199.99

To me the global plans and International ready phones are going to be one hell of a market.

But, again, for a fraction of the price of an iPhone, another I am looking at is the Helio Ocean. It has features and capabilties far above the iPhone, imo.

The iPhone is an iPod on Steroids. It combines both a phone and an iPod. Plus, in order to activate the phone you have to subscribe to Apple iTunes, as if the $500 and $600 models and the 2 year AT&T plan was not enough.

I think people are just fascinated with the touch screen. Once that gets dropped repeatedly, scratched, cracked...good luck. Better buy the warranty replacement plan for about another $400.

I agree that the fragility of the phone is going to be an issue. Still looks very cool. The touchscreens will be used more and more, but as someone on this board pointed out, most likely the machines that will be used the heaviest will be those that have both touchscreen and hard buttons.

They need hard buttons on this because from what I've heard the keys are so small that a lot of errors are made trying to key things in.

Unless you've got super tiny fingers of course.

Plus, of all things, the keyboard does not work in landscape mode from what I read on one site.

And forget about the sticky fingers.

It's not like I'm hoping that this thing doesn't work. Quite the contrary, I would want the keyboard to work well for peeps to key in .mobi's, which will be more practical to view on here than regular .coms.

The iphone giroscope thing helped make up my mind. ie When you turn the phone from portrait to landscape the screen adjusts by itself. It seems so different to everything else and therefore the price is not such a big issue. I agree that they look very easy to damage.

I just saw that "watered down internet" commercial again, for the 100th time. Man, they're really trying to hammer that home. It better work well or they are going to have major egg on their face.

Seriously, take at look at this demo of the helio.

http://www.helio.com/#devices_ocean

Very Very nice, great for scrolling, gyro also, this is one versitile little toy. No keypads visible.

I do like the iPhone in concept. But I am kinda like that tech guy in CA. who reviewed it. I think I'd rather wait for iPhone 2.5 or 3.0.

That's more like it. I like the idea of having a real keyboard. If only the Screen was a bit bigger.

Looks smart. I've got to get that too. :)

They must have done some subliminal advertising on the iphone because it's so desirable yet probably not as good as the Helio. I have to admit that the iphone 2MP camera is poor.

To bad it's on AT&T. I love the Sprint network better here in Houston and I've tried them all. I hope iPhone 2.0, is on all the other networks.

To the people that get one. Hope it's everything you want.

For the money you have to shell out, I certainly hope so.

As for AT&T... a joke here. I purchased two phones and plans through their web site, said service was available.

Get phones, charge them up. No signal. Spent hours on the phone (landline) trying to figure things out. Opening phones, reading numbers on cards, reprogramming, new numbers...about 2 hours and four people later, "Ah, sir? We don't have towers in your area. We just lost our lease as of June first." (2006). Cingular had very poor reception here.

So, it's Verizon here. Flawless reception.

Whatever I choose will most likely ultimately be a Verizon product. Perhaps the new International Phone they now have. Take it all over the world. Ideal for travelers.

I think this is where all telecommunication companies are heading. Instead of competing, I think you are going to see a flat rate fee for all services and sharing bandwidth.
