If one knew where significant things often start, often come from - with seeming insignificant things - then one might understand the intelligence in such a comment.

You can often find those seeming insignificant things in the back pages of news sources - a little note made on them. The ones that recognize the value of such and run with them, can make their fortune.

There's also a thing called 'harvesting' a new idea - extracting any potentially significant points in the idea, to be possibly used elsewhere - even if the overall idea itself seems less than significant. That can be useful in helping improve/solve some things.
