Kyle Tully posted on X that he paid $140 to transfer his .ai domain name to Spaceship. The name moved over, he paid $140 but even though the checkout showed (including one year renewal). Spaceship replied Hey there! We use this template for all transfers, regardless โ€ฆ

If it was renewed at current register within 30 days before transfer-out a year would not be added when moved-out. Not, sure if that's your issue but keep that in mind.

No I don't think that was what happened but @Kyle Tully can comment on that. Spaceship said that years are not added when it comes to .ai. It seems like it's a .ai thing.

That ridiculous transfer fee set by the registry will allow registrars to easily raise their renewal prices to some extent. It stifles competition.

.AI renewals are 2 years minimum, btw.

Here's more info about the specifics of .ai transfers on the GoDaddy website.

"Incoming transfers do not extend the expiry date. Any extensions of the expiry date will require a renewal."

It's a shame that the .ai registry website lacks good info on all this.

Besides, the registrars need to communicate this much better.

It would have to be a domain taken in 50+ extensions for me to invest in .ai. Unless you know what, you're doing .ai is not worth it, and transfer-out is really silly because renewal not included.

This is how it should be presented at checkout (not my domain, just used as an example).

It would be even better if .ai registrations, renewals, and transfers were more in line with the practices of most other TLD registries.

I tweeted about this several months ago when I transferred an AI domain with the assumption I would get 2 years added to the renewal. It was a waste of money, and I was pissed to say the least.

I would request a refund and reverse the transfer over it. You should be able to do so within 48 hours after paying at most registers. Also, another issue if you sell one and buyer moves it out, they might blame you for non-renewal.

ICANN does not oversee ccTLDs.

Everyone should request a refund.

This seems to fall under Arizona statute 13-2202 - Deceptive business practices:

A. A person commits deceptive business practices if in the course of engaging in a business, occupation or profession such person recklessly:

1. Uses or possesses for use a false weight or measure or any other device for falsely determining or recording any quality or quantity; or

2. Sells, offers or exposes for sale or delivers less than the represented quantity of any commodity or service; or

3. Takes or attempts to take more than the represented quantity of any goods or service when as buyer such person furnishes the weight or measure; or

4. Sells, offers or exposes for sale adulterated goods or services; or

5. Sells, offers or exposes for sale mislabeled goods or services.

B. Deceptive business practices is a class 1 misdemeanor.

To me the main issue is why charge for 2 years renewal to transfer a domain if you do not get any extension?

It should be 1 year renewal for transfer, MINIMUM!

That is not the case here.
