Things are definately headed in that direction with the increases in spyware and spam.

In order to salvage the internet, Kari said more pro-active measures are needed. Infrastructure and software need to be improved to prevent the effects of attacks. There is also a need to improve user identification.

Agreed! The spam issue especially has to be dealt with.

Nice article ! But 2006 is too early I think ...

I thought about another thing : is there anything that could stop domain business ?

Just think about what could occure if someone replaces domain names by something else... A new way to surf on the internet, without any address ... I don't know what but I'm sure this is not totally stupid... and imagine the consequences for all of us.

Grégoire.

I dont think so - but the spyware is surely getting out of hand. MS better get it together.

The internet will go on. With global corporations and money being no object it will go on.

I agree that the problem is there and getting worse everyday. But I also think that its a simple thing to solve, although it will take substantial international political will.

Because of tough anti-spam laws in the US, UK, and Germany, most spammers have moved their servers to spammer-friendly countries like China and Russia. What needs to be done is for the first world countries to restrict emails and traffic going to and coming from spam-haven countries in some way, such as:

- only registered emails will be allowed to go through
- each IP can send and receive only a few emails per day

In a sense, the solution can be similar to the way the war against money laundering is being fought:

- enact tough laws on the home front, and implement them
- demand similar tough laws and implementation from everyone else
- regulate the flow of $ (in this case email) to and from uncooperative countries
- have a mechanism for getting off the blacklist, as uncooperative countries enact and implement similar tough laws
- countries not on the blacklist enjoy relatively unrestricted access

My 2 cents.

2006 is way too early, correct we are headed that way but nothing like that could happen that fast. Think about how much money is put into the internet, it can't just come to an end that fast. Besides, the internet is so major, if the internet was to collapase by 2006 that I doubt there would be a world for it to be on by 2008.

I am also a little confused on how spam email will contribute to the collapse of the internet. It would have to be a virus. None of us like spam email but thats not going to cause a collappase of the internet.

What has it got to do with microsoft.

The only reason windows is targeted so much is due to the fact of the high percentage of people who use it. If Red Hat was the most used operating system exactly the same would happen.

Agree 100%

Spam email very feasibly could lead to the collapse of the Internet. Why? Servers have to process received mail.

I'll give you an example --
I used an email address as my primary means of communication from 1999 thru 2001 -- just two years. Today that email address receives a new spam about every minute. It gets so much spam that I can't even use that account anymore without sorting through all the spam and wasting my day.

Now imagine the domain of an ISP or email provider that is used by thousands of users' email addresses. How many emails will these accounts be receiving by 2006? How many messages per second will the servers have to process just to keep up?

In fact, I have one domain name I own right now that receives so much spam that the minute I try to host it on my own server, the server load hits 50+ and it brings the speed down to a crawl. I can't afford a powerful enough server to handle it.

Another server I run that is primarily used for parking domains is having a similar problem. These issues are just going to multiple for the next couple years as spam lists are sold and resold to other spammers.

Has anyone had an AOL email account that they used for any extended period of time? How much spam does it get? Multiply that by the number of users AOL has and imagine the hardware it takes to process all that. Most companies won't have the budget AOL does to take on the load presented by spam.

i have an aol accoutn i've had for 10 years now, for a while it got tons of spam, now i check it once every 2 months ( parents still have aol so i can' check that account when i want) and it only gets maybe 10 new messeages in that time

Anyone remember a program DOS, or some students and staff at MIT that had an idea, a concept, a dream.... a new method of communication, a new platform where the free and uncensored and unregulated exchange of thought and theory wouldnt be encumbered by politics or burdened by corporate greed and commercialism.
The invisable web lives! Those servers that function primarily to supply real answers to real questions.... no whistles or bells, no Ovt or Alexa or meta tags.... this is less than 20% of the web and the son's of ken will fry every google yahoo aol web beacon planting server out there before.....

The collapse of the internet because of spam.....

Regulate, restrict, impose, implement, enact, violate, disallow, make illegal,
more laws....... laws that the above mentioned will never have to obey, and you and I cant send invitations to our kids birthday party to everyone in your family because your over your quota for the day..... |= u ( k that!!!

When was the last time you found what you were looking for on the first page of a search engine. Man you type in airplanes you go through 3 pages of submarines. And why?.. because of.... do I dare say it?
No.
You dont like spam, quit spamming... you dont like spyware, quit tagging... Stop imposing greed.

Install better software, raise filter levels, send a little something back to spammers if you know how, but do not let them make any more laws... because brothers and sisters those laws will never hurt anyone but us.

This was the LAST shot at true free expression... a Joni Mitchell tune come to mind... anyone remember her? At the time she was singing about Mazatlan, Mexico. God I miss that place.

RJ, Armstrong, CJ, do what you have to, but you know.

(sorry ken, we blew it)
Peace, kp

Not new laws, but better technology and standards on the Internet. Right now it's just too easy for spamming and email address spoofing. The source of every email should be trackable and those that abuse email should be turned off. Email marketing can be very useful, but its being abused more than it rightfully should be.

I don't agree with daily limits. Yes, I might want to send a newsletter to my subscribers someday. Also I don't want to get grouped with spammers when I do so, so a standard that could verify that my mail is coming from where it claims to be would be ideal.

Good luck with the spyware, I just spent three hours cleaning it all off a family member's computer. There were programs on there that could turn the machine into a drone ready to act at the whim of some hacker that wants to run a dos attack on a website they don't like.

Top problems on the Internet today:
#1 Spam
#2 Spyware/Adware
#4 Trojans/Viruses

You are right new protocols better technology and it can be done and during the Industrial Revolution naysayers thought industry would halt in 10 years, and there was nothing to patent after 1890. THis area will endure it will have growing pains and it needs constant contribution from the likes of the smart people on here (not me) THere will be away to determine if spam comes from Other countries that do not have any regs. No daily limits, just better technology. Better Software filters, registering your email address like a phone number. just my thoughts you guys are far wiser in these areas than me.

Nice topic.

Everyone is complaining about spam sure its a huge problem but there are many ways around it.

1. Use accounts like Gmail and dont use domain related emails and if you do never post it on a website.

spyware and virus'/trojans

if you dont take the time to protect yourself from these annoyances then yes you will suffer. There is many free firewalls available as well as hardware firewalls, Large companies are now getting into the game of pop up blockers. ect

But isnt the internet just a big virtual game?

one person develops popup software, another develops anti popup software
one person develops trojans, another develops anti trojan software

its like a vicious circle some of the best tools available will never see the light of day because of money. The big companies that are at this time running the internet dont want the average Joe to see these products... Why you ask? because these products would cut into their profit margins.

When they state that the internet will crash in 2006 I think what should also be read into this is that there is people out there working together to take down alot of these big corporations that now run the internet the way they want.

Wasnt it just a few months ago that some pissed off dudes that coded linux via the internet FOR FREE decided to shut them down???

Wasnt Microsoft a victim of something similar not to long ago??? There is alot of very smart people that eventually get together via the internet and put a plan in motion and execute it perfectly.... As a matter of fact I think the 250,000.00 bounty is still up for grabs from microsoft.... Why? Because some people are just to damn smart for these so called experts that work at these big companies.

I predict that in the coming months that we will see the mother of all backlashes at on of these major companies and again they will put up their bounties and for what? free advertising because they were stupid???

But what will hapen the Vicious circle will just start all over again.... Welcome to the game.

IMHO, Internet fraud, and fraudulent business, sellers, buyers, etc are also going to greatly contribute to a downfall of the internet. And that's awful :(

The internet is not going anywhere. Very poor article in my opinion. Spam is not a big deal. Servers can drop requests from IPs and use little processing and bandwidth when dealing with requests. Just comb the access or mail logs. See which ip has spammed you and block it at the firewall level. With linux, this can be done with iptables. The Internet might become more privatized but it isn't going away. I have no problem with spam. I've been using Mailblocks.com for almost a year now and I receive virtually no spam (it's blocked over 26,000 emails) and I don't care if a few important messages get lost in the human filter. Losing a few important messages to save countless hours of filtering through spam is worth it!
