Hostgator has just shut off my site because it was taking up to much of the servers resources. I don't get it, it only gets about a 1,000 visitors a day, yesterday when they shut it off it had 1,500.

Anyway, I don't want to upgrade to a fully dedicated server just yet, should I go with a virtual server? Any thoughts or recomendations?

1,000 visitors a day is not much, what plan were you using?

HostGator oversells, anything that uses too much server resources will get kicked off their servers.

Virtual servers are a good recomendation. What is your budget? Most VPS's have the same benefits as a Dedicated server.

You should either switch to another plan or to another host. As I understand, hostgator always do such things with sites which are grown out their plans. I think it would be better to switch to another host.

how many sites are you hosting? are all of them 1000 visitors? you might be consuming more than 25% of system resource for 90 secs.

They won't close that just to close. Anyway you can ask them about size of the sources you have used to be aware and updated for the further search

Some shared web hosts offer additional CPU resources upgrade. So if your site need more resources than you don't need to move to VPS or dedicated server but you only pay for increasing the CPU usage allowance.

Contact hostgator and ask for recommendations
try to get your site live again

Refund?

If you got a refund from Hostgator just take the money and move away to another company. There are plenty of virtual server providers who can offe you a better deal. Check out the offers here on Namepros. try to find someone who has been doing it for several months (six plus) at least.

Most likely the best option.

If they shut off your site for resource over using then the best option for you is VPS. When you look for a VPS see how much they take to upgrade RAM and stuff when or If you want too.

Agreed Vps, probably with burst RAM would really be great for your sites. I also support refund idea, surely if that is possible. If that is not - I think you should continue using them while seeking and migrating to the new host or plan, in order to make your site stay online and save your visitors.

I can recommend you VPS deals from santrex.net - they have really wide selection of plans and I believe you'll find something for your needs there. All of them are burst RAM.

I recommend you get out the reason. Then make a decision. And i think that refund that is not good idea, because all such issues should be described in the TOS and if you agreed on that and I'm sure that you did you'd better forget about that.

Take it as the sign to upgrade to the higher solution. I'm sure that they limit you with their yes closed.
Good luck

First of all you need to leave HG. The second you need to find another web host. Do not switch to the VPS or something like that. Go for shared acc. I'm sure that webhostingbuzz.com or lypha.com are quite good alternatives for you and you will be able to host your stuff there without any troubles

I'm pretty happy with MediaTemple for large sites.
