It is true that there are a lot of good reviews about HG. If you are looking for a overselling model I think HG will be the best.
But personally, I would always avoid an overselling host.

Personally i do believe Quality matters. I dont think for running a website / forum you do need a lots of space, but what would matter for you is the quality ensurement, which certainly you can have from hostgator. Comparing with lots of other hosts, i do think HG got quality support and service. Limiting resources on shared server is a general idea, most of the shared hoster does the same thing to protect the server from overloading by one domain!

Most shared hosting plans oversell ... those that don't lose customers to those that do because the plans they offer don't "sound as good" for the price.

As shared hosting goes, Hostgator is OK. I have a few sites which have been there for 3 years - no major issues or problems.

Overselling is unsustainable. I have never used HostGator and they could well be as a few have said a good host. However I would not say that most shared hosts over sell.

Over selling guarantees more money for each server that is ran by the company but if things are not kept on top of things can go awry very quickly. All it takes is a few customers who try to get what they were actually advertised and the service can be bad for the rest of the customers.

1 thing however that is a lot worse than overselling is hosts that claim they have unlimited bandwidth or space. No host can offer such a service honestly as at the moment hard drives have a limited space and bandwidth is expensive. Bandwidth is 1 of the main cost of running a server so if you see a package that claims you can get a couple of hundred gig for a few $ then run a mile.

Personally, I won't go with a overselling host.

I would go for a host that offers what I need, not 10 or 100 times what I need. It is just plan truth that you cannot use the allowed disk space and BW completely.
So always think twice before you go with an overselling host.

But overselling can be controlled. It's the other thing.

Good but...
On the shared accounts, they limit the number of processes to about 25.

Over selling works on the knowledge that the majority of customers do not actually use their allocation. Hosts that over sell see this as waste and try to maximize profits by using this space/bandwidth.

Their is however a great potential that a few accounts would start using their allocation and cause serious problems for other customers. In this case the customers are doing nothing wrong, they are simply using what they pay for.

Well, I never did anything wrong, but did put about 60 domains on one account and lately been using more than 25 processes, about once a week. Then creates a problem that ALL my php apps get 500 errors until they reset it. Bummer... wish I had known these limits. I was told I should consider a reseller account. (which I also have but was just lazy to set up separate accounts)

And you don't know upto what level they are overselling. If you do a quick search, you will be able to see hosts offering TB's of disk space and unlimted BW for a few $$.
So how much we can expect from them? When you go for cheaper prices, you will have to compromise on something else and in many cases it can be reliability, quality and even server performance.

I have to say if you need huge space bandwidth you'd better think twice if you are ready for the huge package for bucks, which will be used for 100% by you.

I was only using about 5% of my quota for allocated disk space and 2% of my bandwidth. They just have the max 25 processes limit setting. I'm not saying they are bad.. was great for years until I added all those domains.

That's especially true since all that is given on the front page can be indirectly taken away in the Term of Service. You need to be very careful when choosing a massive overseller, because they will have a lot of restrictions in their server. And without those restrictions they cannot live.
So always it is "You will get for what you pay."
