My horror story with HostBig.net

First of all I would like to point, that I was looking for a hosting from few monthes because dedicated server was for me too much to pay and I didn’t use it. I started to use a reseller hosting from HostBig.net, which appeared a really bad mistake. Maybe the worst I’ve never made.

I went to their website and I read their information and I talked with the live support. The head of HostBig.net is Chris and in the same time he is the only worker of the company. I discussed with him about their refugee program and everything seemed to be okey. They helped me to transfer to their hosting and in a day everything was working. First week, okey. Everything went okey.

Well, then the problems started to come. The hosting started to lag very much. The owner kept blaming on me with the lag because I had few proxies. Yes, I heard what he said and I deleted the most big proxy and left few, which didn’t use even 20 gb of BW together. The proxies weren’t so active. The server kept lagging and it seemed to be that it had nothing to do with me. Then the owner said he had installed server optimization programs. 16 hours of downtime!!!! In their TOS there was written; 99.5 % uptime. Well, he gave me a free month for this problem. Few days passed with the lagging service and I tried to manage. Sometimes the server was so slow, that I couldn’t even access my sites.

After few days I caused again 10 hours downtime. When the owner came; “There wasn’t any downtime” My clients were blaming me because of this downtime and I had all the proofs it was down. He ignored me completely. I lost few clients as well. My proxy traffic dropped and it almost dead. I started to working with promoting and the traffic increased slowly again after that. 2 days after that.. down again, for 7 hours. Why? No-one can know that. Everytime it was down, I got answers like; “Theres problem with server, technicians are working with it”. The owner does not have any kind of experience how to run a hosting company. The server is managed by Layered Tech, which is very slow, because he can’t do anything without emailing them etc.

Ok, now comes the best part. Weeks passed like that, continous downtimes, problems, hitting my head to the wall etc. Now one day I asked the server admin, if it’s possible to get FreeType installed on the server. Yep, that’s what happened actually. He started to install it and he discompleted it. It turned to error and I don’t know how he did it but he made freetype installation to get the server files non-accessable for 36 hours! the server was so long down! Believe me, I lost amount of traffic with all my sites. I’ve got this time enough from this. The server was doing strange things on the sites. When accessing my websites it let you download some strange file. Now I turned my head, I had suffered too long for this very bad hosting. I were hosted for almost 2 monthes and I don’t remember even one day when there wasn’t some problem.

But NOW comes the best part. I said for the admin that I am going to move in new host because the problems because I had added him on my msn to get support previously. Now he started to say bad words for me and saying that I was wasting his time and that I am timewaster. He said I’m like shithead and etc stuff. He terminated my account without a one reason saying; “You were spamming”. The spamming came strangely after I said I was going to move in new hosting account. He disagreed to give me even my sites . I lost data worth of much money because I was hosting many sites on the server. I had to refund many of my clients and the most bad thing is that I lost traffic on my most of sites, so there isn’t revenue even to cover the payment. I moved on ServerRhino.com and now I’m trying that.
My suggestion is that you will beware this host. You don’t want to experience the all bad things I experienced.

Bad host + Bad client = Bad combination

I feel bad for your customers that trusted you with their sites. Imagine how they feel? I would be making a huge post about your incompetence as well.

Finding quality hosting is like finding a valuable domain that expired and fell through the cracks.. It happens, but very very rarely.

Get a dedicated server and eat the cost until you're clients/sites start paying for it... It sucks having to pay $xxx a month for a good server, with a good company, but nothing beats speed and reliability.

I spent 5 months bouncing between different hosts. Some were good, but my needs outgrew their offerings.. Some were absolutely horrible and caused me major downtime. In the end I went with a dedicated server that is far more than I need, but has been the best experience of my life (as far as hosting goes). Softlayer.com, highly recommended.

I will agree with the above posts, you said you had been looking for a while, you should have been able to find something better in the time you had.

On the flip side of that, the host let you down, it should not have happened. I would suggest just taking it as a lesson, like Broke-r said "Live and Learn".

I am sorry, but you should have also been more cautious.

Yep, well i'm currently hosted with a company that really has many workers and I hope everything will go fine. I will grow my business until it will cover the dedicated server and I will get one. Currently it's a bit problem because I am a student and I don't have few hundreds of bucks to spare every month for a dedi that doesn't cover the fees.

Yes, this has been very teachable lesson for me and I've learned about it a lot. I am also planning to start a webhost blog to share information about web hosts and their policies & etc later. I would say after this experience that paying for quality is better than paying for quantity. Thank you guys for your wise words.

why did u choose hostbig when there are many reliable cheap dedicated server providers

no offence, but why are you now using serverrhino? i've personally never heard of them, and after all the troubles you've come by, wouldn't it be a good idea to move to a bigger, more well-known host? i'm sure your clients wouldn't even mind spending a few extra bucks for reliability and support.

Well, it appeared in my eyes as a reliable company. The website convinced me to purchase the package and I found myself doing it. I found information about ServerRhino in WHT and i've heard only positive feedback about them.

Hi everyone,

I run hostbig.net and i do admit that we have had some downtime lately due to repositry errors and some accounts sending out spam (not mentioning those due to legal reasons), but our service is back up and fully operational now and if we have any other errors that cause downtime they are fixed straight away. I've employed a new technical team to deal with such matters so they do get sorted out straight away.

Regards,

Interesting situation. All have problems. But I have to say that that company is good when it can solve problems.

Hey Christopher,

I, personally, appreciate your response to this thread. It shows great responsibility from your part and that you take your business very seriously, otherwise you wouldn't even bother to make a post (some sort of declaration) like this! :tu: That's why I have now edited my previous post. ;)

Hope you and noner will manage to sort things out in an appropriate manner about this incident.

It seems the host takes care of its reputation!

I also went through many hosts before getting my own dedicated server, its much better now I can host as many sites as I like etc... Its also been a great experience as I wanted to keep to a budget so I never hired management services so I have slowly learned how to configure my own server and troubleshoot problems.

I don't want to say anything bad but if your going to play around with proxys then your going to have to play around with the same prob unless you own your own server.

BTW sorry for your data and client loss.

Looks like alls well ends well.
However it has ruined the reputation of Hostbig.net in my eyes.
The biggest problem with being a hoster is bad reputation.
Hosters must keep up all their guarentees and promises

Any reason why you did not move out at the first signs of problems?...
+ it is your DUTY to maintain a backup weekly.
