Keyword "Domainers" - Opinions?

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
Services like DomainersEdge and DomainersMagazine are making the keyword "Domainers" more and more commonplace in our industry. The keyword makes since and seems to fit the title of what we do.

My question is will the term Domainers become standard? Will it gain in value over the next year? I found myself registering what I considered to be solid domain names containing the word "Domainers" Ive also found many of the ones that I was unable to register were recently registered by others. (Jan-Feb registrations).

What is your take on this new "buzz" word? (if it can be considered that at all).

Personally, I think the name is as, if not more, appropriate than any other used. "Domain Reseller, Domain Investor, Domain Speculator, et al.," just don't work for me. Makes perfect sense that "domainers" is catching on being it's a simplified, memorable moniker that suitably describes what many of us do--think Broker, Seller, etc. and the name works.

But almost completely unknown outside of the industry... even other "tech industry" publications just stick with "Domain Name Speculator" or "Cybersquatter ;) " .

Not to say don't invest, but just tempering expectations.

I think domainers is stronger, but I bought these 2 a while ago as I liked the ring and was going to develop them along with the 50 other ideas of mine that never happened.

Don't miss the fact that I'm already registering "take-offs" of "domainer", so my opinion that it's not common in the vernacular outside of the industry doesn't mean it doesn't have value/use.

This raises an interesting point about the potential of the term "domainers" to increase the legitimacy of the industry in the public's eye. Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic, but I think the launch of "Domainer's Magazine" carries the strongest hope of circulating the name and diminishing the use of the other, less than adulatory, terms. Although not aware of their distribution plans, I can imagine people standing in line at Staples or CompUSA and noticing the magazine with its prominent use of the term. Cybersquatter isn't leaving us anytime soon--it's a name that has an immediate ring to it and is attractive to the press for its attention grabbing and nefarious character. But, the more "domainers" is circulated, the better IMHO. :)

I suppose the more insteresting question is will the term "Domainers" ever take over as the predominant title for what we do? Will the public always refer to us as squaters or will the term Domainers become like the title "Realtor".

I have a sinking suspicion that as the general public is made more aware of what we do our industry will become more and more legitimate. But the question is, will "Domainer" become the optimum term?

I dont know, but I am not going to miss out on this oppertunity should it materialize.

within our industry, it is safe to say it has become the defualt for 'what we do'.

I dont think it will be too long before it is used outside of our circle.

Seeker - with the domains I just picked up, Im hoping so! I think picking them up now you are staying ahead of the curve, which is what Ive been trying to do since Ive been in this industry. Im hoping by the end of this year, Domainers will have a stronger hold as the definition of what we do.

I do wish someone would submit a Wikipedia article about the meaning.

Like I said in my appraisal thread that you commented in, I think the Myspace guy (who now owns Enom and probably a nice portfolio), is going to bring more attention and legitimacy to the industry. I think its a long way off before it's known/accepted by the mass public, but it will definitely be benefitting from a new wave of "legitimate" investors in the coming years. Anything with the stigma that domaining has, will require some well known business people's involvement before it gains any air of legitimacy in the eyes of the public IMO. I do think it will be a hot area though, as more and more people realize that dwindling supply of quality domains, more people will be introduced to the idea of domaining.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

DOMAINING is the business of buying, selling, developing, and monetizing Internet domain names. Domain names are the addresses of the web and come in a wide variety of extensions (.com being the most popular).

DOMAINERS are the professionals who deal in domain names. Domainers buy, sell, and develop domain names in a manner similar to real estate investors. Domainers generate revenue via domain parking, web-site development, and resale of domain names. Domainers are also sometimes referred to as domain investors, web site developers, domain registrants and commercial registrants.

As of December 2006 there are an estimated 8,000 to 10,000 individuals globally who make buying and selling domain names a part of their business. USA today reported that many Domainers prefer to remain anonymous due to the highly competitive nature of their business
