Is .info dead..

I never see any sites really anymore that utilize this extensions. Is there a significance of potential profit in .info's.

IMHO, I was never really a fan of the .info extension, never really saw a point in it. Most of the .infos i seen are parked pages. I think out of the hundred of domains i owned i only owned 2 .infos

I am just curious to know because I really dont here much correspondance on them. I might regg one for the h*ll of it. (wasting money)

I have .info minisites that make RENEWAL fee income monthly.
@99c or $2.99 You only need 1 $3 Click in 12 months to pay for name
Or 2 $3 clicks per month to pay for Name + renewal + a BFT Minisite

DO you earn enough from 1 click to pay for your .com's?

sorry but what's a BFT minisite?

(I have rather a lot of .info domains so very interested in anything that can make sites , not too trashy , quickly)

*IF* all these new extentions were going to be available at normal registration fees and in reach of everyday people I may agree but at the price suggested, I doubt they will have much if any impact on extentions including .info.

I have followed the drop names for .info for a while now and I can say that yes much crap is dropped daily but fewer and fewer one word, geos, good two words etc drop now and if they do, much more difficult to pick up.

totally agree - been registering dropping .infos for over a year and can see many more being backordered, snapnamed, pooled and fewer good ones dropping. Although a definite increase in 'mediocre' ones dropping.

i really like the .info ext makes more since than .com to me!
being that is what most web sites are used for is info!
i just hate that the have no value or respect!
they are cheap to purchase but 6x the price or more to renew so most get use for junk with no long term plans or just drop!
and i kinda blame the penny sales of .info on the low value or reselling them domain or site!

I try to think of them as $20 domains now (first 3 years) before regging any .infos

just wish I had done that earlier ..

.info are good for small, quick profits if you are starting without any money. It's not that hard to pick up names for 99 cents that you can flip for $3-5.

Don't wait until they are about to expire before you try and sell them, though. Decide within the first couple months whether you want to renew or sell.

A sheriff's car pulled up at my local gas station last night and it had DCsheriff.info in huge letters on the bumper.

It really made sense when I thought about it.

.info are cheap and can be bought with long names for it to redirect to your main domain, it can also be used for a informative site or a about us domain. Info still has SOME good in it, it isn't dead, it just isnt used as much as .com .net .org and other TLDs

some prime one word .infos are very sensible

science.info sold for $3200 in 05 and sold for $30,000 last year. (Sadly my bid wasn't the winning bid in 05)

city/state/country/geo - one words are appealing to me in the .info (dallas.info, madagascar.info...)

Info is not dead, it's just unique.

The ICANN gTLD expansion is a threat to the whole domain industry but new alternatives will make increasingly less impact to the point where it won't be financially viable to launch them. More established heavily regged and traded alternatives like .info will continue to make progress.

One of the strengths of .info is that information sites are relatively easy to develop technically, easy to maintain because you don't need logins, memberships and customer support, and success is determined more by the quality of information than branding, promotion and cutting edge multimedia web design so they are more accessible for hobbyist developers.

The domain extension hierarchy is like a pyramid, .com is on top, next down is .net and .org, top country ccTLD's, established alternatives, other country ccTLD's, other newer alternatives. ICANN's new gTLD's will be right at the bottom of a very broad based triangle, it will be the registries who launch these new extensions and the new domainers who speculate on them who will be the biggest losers because they will be right at the bottom of the pile and crowded out.

.info has got 5m registrations on the board and that will be virtually impossible for new extensions to mimic, new extensions will struggle to get more than 10,000 registrations because people will only bother with the usual suspect keywords and people wanting sites to develop are going to have plenty of affordable alternatives higher up the extension pyramid.

People have always knocked .info, it's cheap and cheerful and there to be shot at. $1 reg fees was inspired marketing by Afilias and differentiated .info from other alternatives. Obviously the downside is spam but if you a developing a genuine information site why do you need to send emails out in the first place? The appeal to me of .info is I can put together my information offline, I don't have to reply to customer emails and worry about branding and marketing, all I have to do is update information and fine tune my affiliate ads and SEO.

Finding information is one of the main driving forces for people using the Internet so .info has a very clear remit. What is .net's remit apart from being the poor man's .com? What is .biz's remit? What will .mobi do when everybody recognises that all you need to with a mobile site is sniff somebody's browser and screen resolution and deliver the appropriate content from a .com? People will always need information online, it will need updating, there will be new types of information so .info will be in business for quite some time.

I've been buying .info's for 2 years and I've noticed a definite rise in breadth of appeal among domainers in that period. You still get "Is Info dead?" threads but there are more people ready to admit they like .info now. When I bought BankAccounts.info for $625 in Feb 08 there were 25 separate bids on DNF. That's alot of interest for a 2 word .info.

I've bought 2 premium .infos this year; Savings.info for $4,000 in Jan and Coupons.info for $7,000 earlier this month. Uncertainty over the ICANN gTLD expansion, general economic concerns, and the easing of domain speculation after 3-4 strong years will continue to create buying opportunities.

I don't know what topic starter meant but I see more and more .info developed domains. I have 2-3 .info end-user $xxx offers each month for the names that I registered just this year. Today I got 300$ offer for allauto . info, but when I started to search it I found that I decided not to renew it and it went to another person :( I had to cancel negotiations.

Dot info is self-descriptive, looks balanced, and fits to majority site's aim to provide information to their visitors, and .info doesn't contradict to selling products and services like .org

And now question. What other registrars offer cheap .info domains? GoDaddy now offers infos for $2.19 including ICANN fee. But it's SlowDaddy :(

One key I've noticed to ranking is registering your .info for more than 1 year.

If anyone knows any .infos showing up in Google SERPs with only one year between registration and expiration, I'd like to know.

info lives!

My own experience with info has been good!

It's so cheap to reg that that you can make a profit on parking with a good domain.

You can also afford to make lots of mistakes!

It's a very specific niche market - two sales for me:
miamirestaurants.info - $200
fashiontrend.info - $210

Is this the new "official info thread"?

Thanks,

Danto
