Is .info dead..

I never see any sites really anymore that utilize this extensions. Is there a significance of potential profit in .info's.

IMHO, I was never really a fan of the .info extension, never really saw a point in it. Most of the .infos i seen are parked pages. I think out of the hundred of domains i owned i only owned 2 .infos

I am just curious to know because I really dont here much correspondance on them. I might regg one for the h*ll of it. (wasting money)

Deciding on a Domain Name for your planned or existing website can often be a harrowing and expensive proposition. Often the only gTLD or domain extension considered is a .com. There are several compelling reasons why a .info can be a better or equally valid choice.

Current Market value
Because of various promotions this year, and occasional specials, .info's value is now deemed to be less than some other gTLDS.
This doesn't mean they are worthless.
If the retail price was the same as other gTLDs would people still buy it?
Yes of course , retail prices for .info's at most Domain Name Registration sites are the same prices than .com domains

Suitability
.Info means information ,and is what most of the internet is all about. Imparting information about products and services a company is selling.
Information about your family ,business,neighbourhood, diseases or whatever else. Isn't that exactly why you have a website ?
www.minisite.info is a more descriptive url for minisite information than www.barefoottech.net/minisite/index.html

Availability
Because of the mindset of some people , "Free" or "Cheap" means "Valueless" , therefore they don't use the gTLD .info for their web-sites.
Other people have the flawed idea that .info can't be a "Real" tld, therefore they don't get them for investment purposes.
Therefore good keyword and search friendly names are often still available at the above "Bargain Prices" and are very suitable for use.
Even more suitable than choosing a less than search friendly name just because it is available as a .COM.

Acceptability
Most users of the internet, i.e. the average websurfer, will use .info sites.
You remember them, the ones the websites is being created for, utilise search engines and media listings to find a Website URL's. They than use the relevant URL regardless of the .gTLD.

Major websites, including several government agencies use .info for their advertised URL's.
(e.g. NSW Countrylink Rail http://Countrylink.info )

Conclusions
Yes .Info are worth something.Value for money often (not always,but neither is all .com's)
Good names in .info can be worth a lot more than a lousy .com

Everyone should investigate all gTLD's and get rid of their ill informed prejudices.info is not the "Devils TLD" which is the attitude of some people

Think not "cheap" ,think instead "Incredibly Great Value"

The .info gTLD is heavily subsidised and this makes it very cheap. Without those subsidies and special offers, I think that the extension would fall back to .biz levels. However the .info gTLD is a fourth choice gTLD for many Europeans. With around 5 million .info domains registered, it is very far from dead.

Do you guys see this happening when icann allow business to register extenstions.. surely the market with saturate, but will it be the end of many extensions like .info

I'm guessing quality will survive but it perhaps it can't be good for the weaker .infos.

If you were going to make a new extension, .info would be up there, I would be thinking. I can see people becoming more open to non .com options with new extensions, and this could actually help .info.

We have a guild site at EveningReign.info

It was the only ext available and very cheap. Fits it's use perfectly.

I have one .info domain that does quite well with the search engines. They are so cheap to register though, in most cases you must have a gem or developed site in order to sell this extension.

They should raise the price for .info and then, it won't be all that used for spam anymore...

I wonder why they don't want to raise the price....even the price of .biz is way up.
