.IM Discussion

Spaceship Spaceship
Watch
I have seen quite a few registered lately, has anyone got any comments on these names. What if there was a good keyword name, is it worth grabbing.

I believe its the Isle Of Man, but are people possibly going to use the "Instant Messaging" acronym for these domains??

Thanks for any advice??

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
The local market is very limited.
As a vanity TLD it competes with quite a few other extensions
.cc .ws .me etc
I don't buy the instant messaging hype ;)

I would focus on premium generic keywords strictly, no hacks. There has been a sale or two on Sedo I believe, they are rare but they were in the low $$$$ range if I remember well.

The local market is pretty much nil. As sdsinc said, this is probably similar to .cc, but maybe not even that good.

Who knows about the IM hype...either way, I was just able to hand reg Emoticon//IM. Low risk methinks!

Do you remember which ones sold and for how much ?

Marketplace TLD over saturation already. However for a small price I guess a High keyword may yield at least your initial return if not higher.

Limited market and niche I believe but for $5 worth a shot if you find a domain strong enough to mass develop, mini-site or paid affiliate. I can't imagine anybody making money "parking" any .im's, but who knows? Some keywords you only need a single click to cover the price of admission.

I do like the fact of the free subdomains too. I picked up Conference.im and I threw up some sub domains (so far) - ie Video.Conference.im, Chat.Conference.im

I think it has potential in the right environment.

like the lotto commerical goes ... $5 bucks won't change your life except ...

ccTLD as an abbreviation for "something else" has been tried and tried and tried...

.TV, .WS (it stands for "Website!"), .FM, etc, etc, etc.

If you all believe that .IM has some sort of future, then I would suggest going over the drop lists and regularly seeing other vanity TLD keywords- worth $xxx, xxx in .com- not being taken for reg.

These are domainers domains.

I believe these great keyword domains such as FREE.IM will raise in value later this year, and I believe seling them so soon after the drop is a mistake.

I sold Sports.im it was the only one I regged when .im became available to reg. It was sold in 2007.

With the 4.99 price I took a leap for 20 bucks and grabbed a few domains as well. I guess we'll see how they handle the renewal prices next year.

I took

Average.im
Random.im
Eighteen.im
inlove.im

Can't beat the $4.99 price.
So I took a little leap and we will see what happens.
I regged the following:

condo.im
common.im
saudiarabia.im
arabia.im
addict.im
chemical.im
petrol.im
cellularphone.im
preciousmetals.im
employ.im
buddhism.im

For $4.99 definitely worth $25 pick 5 and have some fun. I think first names are cool actually, mine is taken but something like Ronald.IM makes a demonstrative statement Ronald I AM. Now you cannot go crazy with these IMO limited resell, but I think if you got $25 you could find a cool personal one if your name is still available and make a mini site with Noomle or Why Park for a couple. Again IMO

steel.im
matrimonial.im
matrimony.im

just got my last .im :)

Some of you keep telling that .im has no future but, including the names posted by lincolndsp, I can see a decent number of sales for a new and almost unknown TLD. Furthermore 'juegos', which is not even an English word, has been sold for a good price. This strengthen what I stated earlier in this thread that premium keywords always have some value, at least the highest ones.

i personally think its going to do good, with such a small investment no one has chances to lose. wish some of the words i got who knows i might want to even renew them next yr as some are long term

That's the point! I've regged just 2 .im's and have no intention of registering others. In the worst case I will have lost 10$ for the registration fee.

I see no point in .im, you wouldn't brand a company "keyword im" or "keywordim" offline so I don't see why you would do it online. From a development perspective, it would hurt your SEO because Google would think it's an Isle of Man site and mark it down on relevance elsewhere. Getting to the top of Google is extremely tricky so you shouldn't hobble yourself with a meaningless ccTLD for the sake of a generic keyword that people don't search for anyway. Compare .im to .pro; with .pro you get brandability, businesses call themselves "keyword pro" or "keywordpro" offline, plus it's a gTLD so you don't get geo penalised by Google. The new wave of gTLD's coming out will wipe away ccTLD rubbish that domainers speculate on, if the domain doesn't add natural offline brandability and have SEO geo neutrality, you are in deep trouble.
