So if you were making a website from a .com would you buy the other major extensions if they were available (ie. .net .info .org etc) and would other things such a money or how much effort you were to be putting in to the site effect your decision.

I used to do that, but no longer think it is worth it. If your anticipated traffic will be coming via search the tld doesn't matter much. If they will be typing it in, the dot com is the natural one to use.

If I'm developing a website I always get the .com .net .org. I forward the .net and .org to the .com.

This prevents people from buying the other extensions and competing with you and helps protect your name.

For a major project, yes, if they were available. For a small project (mini-site, blog), no.
