If you guys had $100,000 and were able to spend it on domains, what would you do, knowing everything that you do? What mistakes would you avoid, and what moves would you make now based on your experiences?

I'd love to know what people with a lot of years behind them would do if they had had some cash to start, instead of bootstrapping... what are your thoughts on this?

Oooh really good question. I'd like to hear veterans' answers to this, myself.

I would try to buy "on.com"
(although It may be hard to purchase for that price now, it was sold to the current owner for about 1/2 a mil!

I would stick with only premium names, like spend only $10,000+ per name. Some names I would probably target are solid LLL.coms, LLL.net words, and solid LL.net and LL.org. I would go after mostly .com, though if I found a great deal in .net or .org or a truly top name in .info or .us, I would jump on it. At the very least, I would have a long term investment and would only have minimal renewal fees, if any. I'm confident of my abilities to find great deals however...I would probably suggest other people to find fairly good names with great traffic/revenue and buy revenue names.

Another possibility would be to buy just one REALLY good name with 1/4 - 1/2 the money and spend the rest on development of that name. I'm sure a lot of people would do that. My only problem is that I thus far have had really poor luck getting programmers to finish what they start and so development has not been kind to me at all. That's why I would probably go more toward the investing in domains angle vs. development.

I'd invest in LLL.coms and NNN.coms - as they seem to be speeding up in value pretty nicely :) Plus many LLLL.coms, as I find them awesome :P

Heh, that was one of my total favorite names ever too, though it actually sold to the current owner for $900,000. I would give my left nut to own that name!

First thing I would do is soundproof my study so that I can work with less disturbance!

Then I would think what I would do if I had $1million to start in this business.

Without a doubt I would invest in premium dot com domain names, probably in the 5-10k range each. I would develop several of them, or atleast put minisites on all of them. Hold and manage that portfolio - market the sites directly to the end-users.

Me too :hehe: Bora Bora here I come

If I HAD TO spend it on domains I would take 50% and spend it slowly in the drops, mostly on one & two keyword domains and a few brandables if/when good ones come along.

The other 50% would be kept on standby for renewals, developing a few names and also to take advantage of when the really good ones drop and there's not many of the usual major buyers present.

Would I try and outbid aaaaaaaaaaaaa, Bonkers, Saggydimes etc - NOPE ! I'd spend it on the good ones they miss.

(Assuming Domains being the only Route to go with the cash) I'd probably suggest the same as Nametrader above ;) Proven income makers in .com , Can't go wrong there.

$40K on aftermarket .coms (good two-word generics)

$40K on aftermarket non .coms (strong one word generics in .info, .us, .mobi....in that order)

$20K for renewals for next few years.

I have idea how to create script which will search for good dropping domains, but I don't know how to write it. So I would spend $10000 to hire a good programmer and I would use rest of money to register this domains :)

I would do like the smart people above, but I would hold back 10,000 to come here and blow some newbie away by buying afff7h.com for 10K just to watch you all have canniption fits.

Why dont you try to contact a developer and see what they would charge you.... If youve got a plausable idea that works, it probably would be worth it.

I would invest it all in www.MonsterMotors.com

But if it has to be for domains, I would buy one or two really brandable names and put the rest into development.
