Hello all,

If you could start again what would you do differently and what would you now concentrate on given market conditions?

I look forward to your words of wisdom

I'll re-word the question to see if I can solicit any responses.

Being new to this I am trying to find out where the best chance of success might be. I am not looking for a short-cut, I don't mind putting the work in. I am just tyring to ascertain market conditions.

Advertising revenue is falling and there are many people flipping domains so these areas might not present the opportunity they once did. Site development on the back of a decent domain may represent the best opportunity.

I would welcome your thoughts and would appreciate any responses to the above.

Thanks.

I think re-wording the question to expect any answers is already a good start.May be you're right Theydon about Site development and its opportunities, i knew someone who had succeed in this, but i don't know if he is sill doing it now, because, apparently it is not that easy to deal with it.

Opportunities

Thanks Alan.

I can see how my initial question and the way it was worded could be taken negatively but be assured that is not how it was written so apologies if it caused anyone to think 'sod you'.

I would just welcome people's thoughts on where opportunities lie in the current market. My strong preference is not to go down the developing a site route and I am interested in people's thoughts on advertising revenue and buying and selling domains.

Is this market getting extremely difficult and would it be a huge challenge to someone just entering? Or with lots of reading and careful strategy can it still offer some decent returns?

Thanks.

If I were to start again, I would go for names that I myself could develop and use. The names that I can develop easily and could be used to sell something. In short, some kind of product names.

What would I have changed?

Nothing.

It was, and still is a great learning experience.

I would test my theory that a particular niche would be profitable. Early on I chose a niche where there was a lot of money but selling the domains to businesses was difficult/impossible. By the time I concluded this I already had a fairly large "portfolio". Most of it was simply abandoned as I moved into other more fluid niche markets. I had failed to take into account my ability to relate to and sell to the customer.

Therefore, my suggestion would be to choose a few names in a given market and then work on selling these. Do you have a high comfort level selling to the end users in this niche? If so then I believe you will be more successful. Repeat the process.

If you choose a buy and hold method then it will become more important to monitize your domains. It's nice to think of a particular name being worth much more in the future but you are continuously paying for holding your portfolio - 100 percent of your investment per year (if you hand regged the name). Work on the offsetting income to this expense. (In other words - limit your downside exposure)

I hope this helps you in your quest. :)
