Often wonder this questions, when I see very valuable lll.com's drop, only real reason anyone would let them drop, other than forgetting would be the fact they passed away. I never thought about this till now, what would happen to your domains, who else knows your account logins, and knowledge to access the domains. hmmmmm

In my case, I just put all relevant information in my will. My family is well aware that my domains are a meaningful asset and they will have to deal with their disposal somewhat rapidly, when I sail off.

my mom has all my logins which is good because my younger brother and sister still live there so some help for her as my brother is real good with computers as well, I have everything in a list as well like long term hold/sell so if something were to happen she knows which ones to keep and which ones not to worry about/drop, good idea to school a brother, sister, mom, dad etc... just in case something were to happen, I prefer to stick with blood relatives instead of a gf in case you get caught doing something bad they don't break up with you plus have a domain fire sale while your sleeping. :hehe:

Good point, hadn't really thought about this prior to a short while ago.

Originally, all my domains were owned by myself. This changed when I co-founded F5 Domains, 90% of the domains became the property of the company, which has staff to manage this kind of thing (and the 5,300 other domains under management since we started up). Basically my will has provisions for the allotment of shares in the company and I'd hope the staff would continue to plug along and provide ongoing financial security to those I've left my assets to.

I have decided to donate my domains to Godaddy as im sure they need the business.....OK, just kidding.

I have a plan, yes, and a big part of that plan is to keep all my domains at the one registry.

The rest of the plan is between family members.

One by one they will expire. Giving your login details to your family is one thing. Them being able to sell the domains is something entirely different. This isn't like cashing stocks out or taking an old lamp down to the antique store.

Was thinking of doing something like a info page and put it in the locker.
My wife think I am not spending my time wisely and don't want to listen to this stuff.
(just need to tell my nephew's to sell all and give the money to my kids)

I have a file that describes what to do in the event I am not around, along with value estimates for the domains and passwords. The file is encrypted. Among other things, the file contains contact information for friends in the industry that would help and not sell cheap.

I also have registered some of the most valuable domains far into the future... just in case.

I have 3 cats: Daddy, Monik and Dyna - you know why ;). Every cat has a microchip under the skin, with all my logins and passwords (everyone has different). My family members know it.
New technologies, you know :)

I have an excel spreadsheet on my external hard drive that has al of my domains and account passwords and logins. My wife knows where to find it if she ever had to.

Good topic never thought much about it - never mind death my brother was in a motorcycle accident a few years ago he has no recollection of the following 4 months of his life and was not out of the hospital for 6 months. I think it is worthwhile to set your domain prizes to auto-renewal - you never can tell whats around the corner.

Some inevitably would, but personally speaking, I keep fairly detailed records- including with my own scaled valuations- best case scenario, average resale price contingent on traffic/earnings, fire sale price. I also have every name categorized on a 1-5 scale.
5's are the best of the best.
4's are the great ones.
3's are solid
1's and 2's are usually speculative plays on PPC or end-user flips where I'm playing straight risk/reward. I let a lot of these go myself, every renewal cycle.
Basically, they can look at a sheet and determine what's worth keeping and that isn't. Worst case scenario, even if they dropped 1-3 and only kept 4's and 5's, I'd be OK with that. The value of my portfolio is very topheavy anyway.

My family is smart enough to know better than to let "ourhometown.org" drop, or "CityJustToTheSouthOfUs.com" sail off into a snapnames auction over an $8 bill.

I've shared enough of what I'm doing with my brother that if I were to pass I hope he would take over what I've started, or at least try to sell everything.

Well I wanted to add to this conversation and to relay some information on the same note. I have thought about this exact situation since day one and have been developing a business that will be around the first/second quarter of 2010. I have spent the better part of 10 months developing a game plan to protect domainers and there family should they pass away.

I have collected all the necessary information from the major registars on there policies and procedures. I have also organized the paperwork and steps to deliver into the proper hands the precious domains we have worked so hard to collect. I am working on rolling out the concept but need desperate feedback on this as well.

The business I plan to roll out will be 2 parts and each will contribute to the other. I have 2 distinct business models that I plan to open up for discussion and opinions in the not so distant future. I was encouraged by a fellow member to present the fact that soon there will be an option and a business to help you make sure you or your loved ones never miss out on your hard work and dedication to this great business.

The 2 business models will be under the same flagship but one will be the actual will and legal information. Also there will be information and options of what is the best course of action to keep your property safe and out of others hands. The other model will be an educational tool for your family members/ loved ones to use to weave there way through this business and not sell a domain for fire sale prices.

Future Business Addresses will be :

Model 1: DotLegacy.com

Model 2: InheritingDomains.com

Now right now they are parked because I want to collect some opinions on what type of services would you be comfortable with and what would you expect out of a service. Trust would be of top priority of course but what features and information would you like to be provided. I will be posting a new thread about this very soon but please if you have questions or comments post them here or pm me anytime about this matter.

The whole reason behind this venture is simple to protect our investments and to take care of our family and loved ones.

Look forward to hearing from each of you and your opinions!

Blake A. Worthington

Hmm. This is really a tough question to be thought of. But telling the secrets to others may be moe dangdrous sometimes but we can share with someone upon whom we rely totally.
