What should happen to domains to bring their value to zero?

I would like to discuss the topic.

What must happen to domains and the market so that all those highly priced domains loose their value? Share your opinion please.

I can't imagine any happening that would be bad enough for the entire market to disappear... for some reason domains would have to be worthless and for that to happen the internet must also be worthless and in that case useless.. perhaps a time when the internet has passed its usefulness, so much so that no one uses it anymore because there is something better out there !? even then, i would say it is probably beyond anyone at this time to imagine a time when this could be the case.. sooner or later you can imagine technology will have moved so far that human implants will be used, but even then the net will surely still be in use.

Not even a total collapse of the net in a technical way would case a total market collapse, there would be plenty of demand for domains from people waiting for it to be restored..

Some sort of global event that caused a large % of the population to be wiped out would severly affect the market... even then though, i doubt you would have people with amazing names dumping them off for next to nothing.

What are your thoughts wasistdas ?

I was speaking to one person no longer than a week ago who had an idea that when names begin being taken up, URLs would take an image format rather than a text format. That way, you could copy/paste a company logo into the address bar and it would go straight there. If that happened, it would probably bring an end to domains forever.

Another would be the possible "netsplit" that has been mentioned in the Industry News section. There would either be identical domains for different zones pointing to different sites, or some zones may choose to do something completely different.

Computers move so fast these days it's hard to predict what they'll do with them next. I honestly believe there are better solutions to the internet and they can't be too far away from finding them. 10 years from now, we may all become obsolete.

I think the idea of pictures as URLs is impossible. There are several reasons for this:

- Technical reasons: The entire DNS system needs to be changed; what about email?
- Practical reasons: Mentioning a URL on TV, in ads, on cars or whereever would be impossible as you can't copy / paste from there. And how would you even aquire the logo of IBM without visiting ibm.com or a related site first? Potential chicken and egg problem here.

A (no, the) way to make a resource worthless is to up it's supply to infinity or bring down the demand to zero. Because of their unique nature right now domains are scarce resources, that's why they have a decent value.
I see the possibility of a switch to a more sophisticated DNS system, a system where domains lose their uniqueness. In such a system everybody could have the domain name he wants and different people could share the same domain name somehow thereby eliminating the scarcity of domain names.

Now don't ask me how that would work, that's something smarter people than me can come up with. A possibility I see is somehow working the location of servers into the DNS system or something.
