I thought all the LLLL.com's were gone?

I thought I had read here and elsewhere that all of the possible 456,976 possible 4-letter combination dot com domain names (LLLL.com) were registered quite some time ago. But I got the newest issue of Inc Magazine today and in it is an article entitled "Where Have All The Words Gone? Domainers Picked Them, Every One." and in the article it states that exactly 3,293 4-letter dot com domains are still available for purchase (and sites Go Daddy as the source for the info).

So, which is it? They all gone or are there still some available for reg fee?

I believe they were all gone, last year or something
but now they seem to be dropping.

The artcile isn't right though they can be hand registered daily. The buyout is failing so give it a couple of months and the article may be correct.

some are worth less than reg fee

They were gone, but the LLLL.com buyout was the absolute apex of 'domainia'.
When rumors started to circulate that they were selling out, people wanted them.
When they finally sold out, people wanted them even more. No one bothered to stop and consider whether there was any inherent value there or not- other people were buying, the supply was fixed which meant that there was an endless stream of "next bigger idiots" to pass off the hot potato for more money.

It was classic, classic, CLASSIC tulipmania 101.
Many people predicted that it wouldn't hold, those people were right.

The jury is still out on this one...... The buyout currently is holding, but people are speculating it will fail soon... I disagree, I predict that the buyout will hold, and any drops will continue to be regged within 24 hours of being available.... Currently they are regged within minutes or an hour or 2 of being available....

I've selectively purchased a few and I believe that there can be value in them (especially if you can get a decent acronym from 3 of the 4 letters), but so many are just completely useless and awful.

I have to agree with that.
Also some of the pronounceable ones may have value.

I've seen quite a few on the drops lately but unless they pronounce anything I just let them fall through the sifter.

Yeah i'm confused why people pay reg fee for bad llll's when they're not even selling for near that on places like ebay.

That article is wrong. All LLLL.coms are still registered. A few have been droping each day lately and registered usually after a few minutes.

LLLL.com's have been droping and being auctioned by sites like Snapnames and Namejet for many years. In fact, the number of daily drops now is lower than in previous years.

Every day drop some and all were picked up by domainners. Maybe this is not a good news for us.

i still dont see the point of random 4Ls. although they may increase in value significantly over the years. pronounceables are really expensive. i still believe there are some out there that have not yet been registered, or dropped.

IMHO LLLL will have real value in no less than 2 or 3 years, so it's important to keep the best few (triple premium and pronunceable double premium).

I can't even snap up a LLLL.com on GoDaddy backorder. Sure, LLLL.com is nowhere compared to yesteryears but it'll pick up again soon. I'm sure of that.

Even though it took a few eccentric rich dudes, the LLL.mobi buyout is back in effect. If LLLL.om ever fails to hold, it'll be bought out again.

I agree... LLLL.coms are one of the best long term investments in domaining.. I wish I had more than the 20 or so that I have.....

I agree.

One time "bad letter" (or 'random' letter) LLL.com domains were seen as useless investments. They are now worth $5k! Not a bad ROI on $50-$80's worth of reg fees.

*All* domain prices have fallen recently, and registrations (and drop catches) have fallen too. This is due to the recession, but this is changing.

I have about 50 LLLL.coms, about 10 of those are $xxx (and one is $x,xxx) - I am still convinced they are a worthwhile investment. But just not in the short term. ;)

I can recall a thread made about 4-5 years ago (maybe 6) that had a vast list of LLL.net for... around $65 each. And even these days they hit late $xxx at the least, it seems. I plan to invest in a lot of LLLL.com once I have more funds to do so.

I only have one but it's a good one, I think: EYCC.com 12 years old :) Considering selling it if the right price comes around.

Hmm, I remember that thread too actually. Pretty funny stuff :)

Yes, I plan on investing more in LLLL.coms too. I'm happy enough with what I have now, although I do think that their value will soar in future years.

Yes, their value is low now. And the buyout is no-more. But that's due to the recession. The fundamental principle behind short domains becoming more popular is still true, IMO.
