GoDaddy Auctions -- Discussion, Acquisitions, and Sales

I searched the forum and could not find a thread dedicated solely to Godaddy auctions, which seem to be heating up lately.

I envision this thread as a place for discussion regarding YOUR sales and acquisitions, and general discussion about the auction venue itself, and, perhaps, some domain oddities that are popping up on the auction site, for example, high-priced domains that should be regfee.

:)

One caveat, though: for your own good, PLEASE do not reveal your auction win (or anyone else's, for that matter) until the domain has landed in your account because the original owner still has the option to renew it, and I know how vexing that can be. In other words, don't count your chickens until they're hatched.

On the other hand, if you're having second thoughts about your auction win, by all means tell us all about it.

I suppose that if an auction win is high profile, it's already out there, but, still...

Anyway, I'll start with three comments:

1. I won my first (and maybe last) intentional typo, and it's getting clicks (no $ so far, though): Forwx.com. I could not find a live TM on this term, but one never knows. I have mixed feelings about this one.

2. I accidentally clicked on a BIN that I didn't want (I wanted the one above it), but I decided to honor the bid anyway. Grrr..., so be careful before hitting the submit button. It's not in my account yet, so I can't really reveal it right now.

3. Currently, there's a weird .co domain at over $9,000, with three bidders duking it out. Again, I don't want to reveal what it is, but if you go to the most active auctions, it's number 1 (as of this posting).

Mods, I hope this thread is okay.

:)

No, they don't charge automatically. As far as I know it is $10. Can someone confirm this?

I recently had an auction win slip past my things to do list. I wanted to pay for it, but things got busy and I was happy to see that Godaddy charged my credit card automatically after a short delay.

I would hope that non paying bidders get more than a petty $10 fine.

I also just won an auction by default thanks to a non paying bidder. I wonder if it was you.

did you get it a price just above the 3rd place bidder, or just below the 1st place bidder's fake bid?

@Fonzie,
"If you made some nickle and dime purchase and for whatever reason flaked out on paying, expect to receive the fee. Again, IIRC, it's something like $10 for the first time, then it goes up drastically should you pull the same bullshit again and try to reinstate your account."
First time was about 3 years ago, didn't access my godaddy account for a long time (about one year) and they charged me $10 after one year from the auction end time. Recently happen to bid accidentally in an other domain (simple domain auction) and noticed the bid just a few minutes before the auction finished. I contacted the support and they said I have to pay a fee of $10. I replied to them, that I want to confirm the paying fee of $10. Without any reason the fee went up to $50. They cancelled the auction, so I could not pay for the domain anymore and the insist in paying the $50 fee. And what is ridiculous, the support can not explain why it is $50. Also I was charged to pay a tax fee of 24% for a normal auction domain (the same auction with the wrong bid), I asked them what is this fee about and same wired situation, support can not explain it properly. The auction value was low $xx.

Thank you for your reply.
@m-i-k-e, I guess that's a joke, There are thousands of auctioned domains at godaddy and would be impossible to pick the same domain. The domain I am talking about had nothing special, just a bid at the wrong domain.

It is quite easy to place an unintentional bid, which is why one should proceed with caution.

Recently, I tried to place a bulk list on watch; instead, I got the "Buy this domain" message on each domain.

So I deleted the list instead.

I hadn't gotten to the actual commitment part yet (whew!)

But I would have called my rep had things gotten to that point.

Also, if you have lost an auction, you need to check your "won" list regularly; occasionally, the winner is a non-payer and the domain is then awarded to the next highest bidder, minus all the non-payer's bids. I learned this lesson the hard way and lost a great domain for cheap. More than that, I was worried about my reputation as a potential non-payer.

Fortunately, I wasn't penalized; I simply explained the situation to my rep, and it was taken care of.

Godaddy automatically gave it to me at the price just above what the 3rd highest bidder had bid which was shortly before I joined the auction. I paid about $150 less than what the non-paying bidder had won the name at.

I just thinking about this strategy.
1. When I found good domain, I just add it to watch list instead of bidding it directly.
because if we bidding it directly:
a. the previous owner can get the notifications, and have long time to think about renewing/ reactivating it.
b. other bidder can start bidding and increase the price
and other
and also we can (have enough time) think about the domain is really good or not.
2. when the time almost finish/ last day I will bid it.
3. but if the domain is not so good/ just ok. I will wait for close out price (can save little bit).
and this also can train us, to value domain. if the domain is good the closeout price will be $10-11. but if the domain not so good the price can go up to $5.

what do you think ?
Thanks

Sounds logical.

Usually, the higher the cost, the most likely a domain will get renewed.

But I recently won a $5.00 closeout, and it still got renewed at $80.00 (not transfered out).

It wasn't that great of a domain, so I was definitely puzzled.

I don't want to double post this, but this weird situation is relevant to this thread as well:

I also see it. but i did not count how much.
maybe somebody want to have some control on LLLL ?
and they think it is valuable/ gamble on this area ?
for 10 + it still good ideas
example buy 1000 domain

If this is one person placing backorders, then that is about $31,500 in backorders alone.

D-:

I suspect that this person will not get into a bidding war with anyone, but simply pick up domains that go for $10.00 and allow the rest to go to others.

I'm guessing that the bidder is a deep pocket organization or a total noob.

There are now some $5 LLLL closeouts; I'm not sure why the bidder hasn't pursued these. With coupons, these turn out to be cheaper than backorders.

I see many discussion is about buying at auctions.

I did not see enough discussion about selling domain at GD auctions.
1. what is best strategy to sell at GD auctions ?
2. how we can increase the chance of selling higher price beside the premium listing ?
3. any other strategy ?

Thanks

GD Auctions for non-expired domains is really weird in my opinion. Not really an auction.

The expiring names get alot of attention because they are bid only (instead of the offer/counter offer or buy it now names)

Does anyone else think you should be able to specify start time, reserve price etc, starting bid price and just let it run more like ebay. Odd to me that for non-expiring domains its more of an aftermarket than an auction... I dont know.

Yeah, I've experimented with different listing methods. I've never received offers, even at lower opening prices than what they ended up selling for when I changed them to buy-nows later.

The whole things seems now centric on fixed pricing and that's what they've been trying to encourage.

With that said, of the different listings I have had more success with the premium listings so I'm willing to stomach the 30% commission. Just adjust your pricing accordingly, to end up with an amount you'd be happy with.
