Question about ethics from GoDaddy regarding their auctions

I have a question about a situation I encountered and whether the practices of Godaddy regarding their Auctions/moving/retrieving a domain to/from auctions are ethical or not.

My part:
I had a domain last year that passed the 30 day mark and was transferred to the auctions. It didn't appear in my account online after this so I spoke to multiple Godaddy reps in an attempt to pay whatever necessary associated fee to get my domain back. I was told that there was NOTHING that could be done and I would have to bid on the Godaddy Auction and win it to get my domain back, and nothing else could be done, and once the domain was in auction platform there was no way possible of putting it back in your account short of winning the Godaddy auction. I bid on the Auction and I lost the auction and lost the domain name.

Recent part:
I was recently intending to bid on an expiring auction this year so I placed a bid, so I was very surprised when I saw it closed days before it's scheduled completion and I got an e-mail saying the auction was cancelled because it was renewed by the owner.

I'm aware that in the past there were domainers that would get appraisals from bids and then renew. But I thought Godaddy made changes that put an end to this as they told me last year that nothing could be done to retrieve my domain once it goes to auctions.

My question is why did this occur? Does GoDaddy treat names that are likely to sell at auctions differently or if not why was I not allowed to renew once the domain hit the auction last year, whereas another user was allowed to this year?
