ICANN is getting ready to deliver a resounding blow to domain crime, by changing the domain transfer process, once again.

Any change to a domain’s contact info would be considered an update that requires the domain registrar to lock it down for 60 days.

Beginning on December 1st, registrars are required to send emails to the registrant to confirm changes whenever they are made; once confirmed, these changes would cause domains to be nontransferable for the following two months.

It appears that pushing domains between accounts would also lock down the domain, if the source and destination WHOIS info differs in as much as one letter!

Do read this !! (as far as I presume transfer out after a FREE PUSH/MOVE wouldn't be possible for 60 days ; but after a transfer or free PUSH / MOVE , another free PUSH / MOVE wouldn't be locked down for 60 days, but transfers would (or am I wrong) ?

Godaddy applies this (60 days lock for transfer out, after MOVES/PUSHES already for several months).
Lots of other registrars wait till the 1st of december. And a lot of registrars and domainers don't know this yet.
So : If you want to change something -(other then at Godaddy) => Hurry : only 12 days left !
Point is that only regisrars profit from this : you won't be able to transfer out to another registrar because of a transferpromotion after a FREE PUSH, and this for 60 days

I've always thought that privacy meant that the registrar was holding the domain in his own name as agent of the registrant. If this is so, then removing privacy is effectively a change of registrant.

Basically, if you buy a domain and it gets pushed to you (within the same registrar), you won't be able to change it for 2 months? Well, that's going to be annoying sometimes. But, nevertheless, it might actually help improve the quality of the domain trade if it limits everyone from flipping domains within 2 months.

The only main time I find this to be a nuissance is if there's less than 60 days (or slightly more) of registration left on a name you buy from someone as it forces a renewal at that registrar. Some registrar renewals being around $20 or so which you might try to avoid..

Other than that, the new buyer just needs to be notified to move it out after 60 days...

From what I understand you can still push the name to another user within the same registrar, but the new owner would have a fresh 60 day registrar lock

(I found already the 60 transfer lock after simply registerring and transferrring in, so ridiculous, and with no valid reason). But the new policy is MUCH MUCH WURSE, if they don't change this back again soon after 1st december.

(And don't you know : Godaddy is already applying this partly for a very long while now => after PUSH in any case 60 day transfer out lock. Don't know if after push, new push also will have to be 60 days. but information about this seems to suggest this Not all extentions would be affected ; f.i. the cctlds wouldn't). It's one mumbo jumbo.
But the info I get about this gets more and more disastrous. Emails from several registrars are coming to tell about this in my emailbox.

BUT I HOPE THAT THEY WILL CHANGE THAT VERY SOON BACK AGAIN AFTER THEY INTRODUCE IT ON THE 1ST OF DECEMBER.

As it's not running yet fully =>By the end of the year and certainly in the beginning of next year lots of people will be surprised, and then I think they'll see the consequences and I hope a VERY BIG PROTEST to ICANN ABOUT this ridiculous new policy will come.. .

I contacted Fasthosts after your post to get some clarification.. this is what they answered

I prefaced by saying that I wanted details on the new Dec 1, 2016 rules that are going to come in effect.

Then I said DEC 2 2016, I buy a name, I can transfer to another fasthosts account 2 days later? (to eliminate any confusion)

You are absolutely right, Obama is the one to blame here, he's also responsible for that ugly graffiti at your district and smell of urine right next to it, nevermind the broken windows. But as soon as Trump is in the Office, we will change that and make domains transfers great again!

This is a crazy rule. I'm sure it's made with the best intentions with regards to security. It should be an optional rule for those who know they won't be selling their domain.
