Hi guys, I recently signed up to NP (yesterday) and just wanted to introduced myself and ask a couple of things.

I have been looking into domaining over the last couple of weeks and have found the NP forum and members here unbelievably helpful.

There are a couple of things I am unsure on so any help would be great;

1) For beginners like myself, what is the most optimal number of domains to hold in my portfolio should I start small with like 2 or 3 or spread myself across many avenues?
2) Backlinks - could somebody explain this a bit further to me. I had a look but could not find exact answers. IE when purchasing a domain is it better if the BL low and not high or the other way round?

Sorry for the noooobie questions.

Thanks,

Hey buddy

Welcome to NP, hope you njoy ur stay here and all the best with ur domaining ventures.

With regards to your q's:

1) For beginners like myself, what is the most optimal number of domains to hold in my portfolio should I start small with like 2 or 3 or spread myself across many avenues?

I suggest before you even spend any money on buying domains. READ, read, read and then read some more. :) Learn as much as you can from the Beginner section of this forum. How many domains you want to hold in your portfolio will depend entirely on your own personal financial situation. I would suggest not investing money that you need to make back QUICKLY and urgently.

2) Backlinks - could somebody explain this a bit further to me. I had a look but could not find exact answers. IE when purchasing a domain is it better if the BL low and not high or the other way round?

Backlinks going to a domain should never me measured by quantity. Whats of more importance is the quality of these back links. Better to have a handful of HIGH quality back links that 1000 low quality back links. I wouldn't stress to much about back links just yet though. Rather learn more about market trends and brand-ability...

Hi deez007, many thanks for your detailed response, very helpful.

I have been reading solidly for the past couple of weeks but the impatient side of me wants to jump right in and get started but I appreciate that doing that isn't the best idea.

Thanks again

First of all, you are most welcomed to NP ..

As for your questions, try to focus on quality not quantity .. start with .com since its leading the market ,, focus on keywords and other languages .. don't stuck only with english spelling! (I don't mean internationalized domain name (IDN)). Don't waste your money just to full up your portfolio!
Read and Read and try to follow news that related to this industry! and the most important thing is to save your domains and keep them out of Children reach :)

Good luck buddy

Reading will help, but it will take a long time to learn that way.

What you really need is to learn what sells and what does not (and this has only little so see with appraisals).

I'd suggest you start with a fictitious portfolio and concentrate on what should be sold quickly. Look at expired domains or auctions and pick up some domains without spending any money. Then look if this domain has been bought quickly and at what price. It works only if the domain you choose is well visible (there are still a few good domains that are not very visible and stay expired for quite a while)

I'd forget about backlinks unless you have a real knowledge of SEO. Some domains are bought and sold for the sole purpose of improving ranking. Usually, they are called PBN (private blog network). There is a market for domains that are 'very suitable for PBN' (aka: with some excellent quality backlinks). For PBN, the domain name is usually of little importance versus backlinks/reputation/seo factors. Overall namepros is not really a good place to learn and discuss them.

Hello and Welcome to NP.
You should first read more and more articles here and learn about domains. When you think you had sufficient knowledge try to build a portfolio of very few domains but they should be good and only hand registered them, don't even try to buy from flippa or any other website(if you think the domain is more than good and you eagerly wants to buy it, buy it for low price don't spend too much).
For your second question, research more and more on backlinks, you can find your answer yourself.

A good indication if your names are valuable enough would be to submit them to Namejet, Brandbucket. Besides, you can always sell your names to a targeted audience. Know who your potential buyer(s) will be (as in an individual or business) before you buy any.
