O.K. I am a total newb at this and have yet to flip a domain. I have 22 cheap domains. Some I bought off ebay and some I registered myself. I don't think any of them are very good. I put a couple up on ebay and a couple on Flippa but they are getting no activity so I decided to stop buying domains based on what I thought sounded cool and actually buy some based off of research. lol.

My question is, Would it be better to buy cheap domains off ebay and try to resell them or spend some extra cash and buy some premium domains off Godaddy and the various other auction sites and research them and try to flip those? I found a bunch of decent domains in the hundred to five hundred dollar range.

I also was wondering what domain value estimator is the best. I checked a domain I found for sale at 100 dollars off Godaddy's buy it now section and I ran it thru Siteprice, Estibot and Valuator and they gave me a price of $8454.00, $800.00, and $175.00 respectively. What is up with that ? That is a huge difference between the three and it makes it hard for a newbie like me to figure out a domains value.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to NP

Don't buy names off Ebay, rather research a certain niche/industry and try and buy a decent name on the aftermarket, you will find most names you want are already taken, rather email buyers of existing names and try and find a bargain

Check these 2 sites to get an idea of what sells

namebio.com
dnjournal.com

1st Rule Of Domaining: Never use automated appraisal sites

Just post the name in the appraisal section on here and you will get a much better idea

Welcome to the forum. As you yourself have admitted, you need to stop buying names, at least for a few weeks or months and increase your research about the value of domains. The most important skill you can get in the domain business is to recognize what is valuable and what is worthless.

Once you know that (which may take time), things will become crystal clear in terms of which way to go with the little or large investment you are trying to make.

Domaining.com
NameBio.com
DNJournal.com
NamePros.com of course
DomainSherpa.com

And so on...

Hello & Welcome,
I think it would be best for you right now to take couple of days reading forums & watching interviews as suggested above.
Then,
1. Do you have budget, the one that you do not require in short run, neither you get disturbed by not getting any penny as return on investment.
If Yes,
Then,
2. Go for couple of good Dot Coms, as per your budget, currently LLLL.com are liquid, study the market, plan your investment.
3. It will be good to keep your domain investments to a few domains, say 5 to 20. Try to sell it, Good things Sell, even for a cheaper price, but if something is good, it will sell. It depends on you how much you can wait or how much do you want to sell.
As above, namepros, namebio, dnjournal, domainsherpa are some of the best resources for anyone in this venture.
4. Do not just rely on domain estimators, but it is good to take a look at what estibot is telling. The best thing is if you work hard in this business, you will develop a sense for valuing domain names.

Best of Luck.

Appreciate the tips. Is Estibot the most accurate of the three I mentioned. I have a little cash I can spend without worrying about a quick return. I can start this venture with about a grand so I am figuring if I can learn how best to judge a domains value that I can use that wisely and get a good domain as opposed to all the cheap ones I have been grabbing up.

I will just watch some Godaddy auctions for a few days and see what everyone is bidding on to get a feel for how it all works. Namejet also looks to be a good place to browse. Why is everyone going crazy over the LLLL domains ? I have 3 five letter domains that I got cheap off ebay, are they worth anything. They are all pronounceable words.

as people have mentioned its not worth putting too much store on estibot values but they can be used to give you a very general idea of where the value is sitting if you're unsure. the best way to value domains is by learning yourself what is worth something and what is not - also keep an eye of current trends as these can tell you what is popular and may sell well at the time. i think you are doing the right thing in keeping an eye on the auctions to get an idea of what is selling too as you will get a good idea from that. with the 5 letters ones you have it does depend on what they are tbh - i know its not a great answer sorry but thats how it is in this game from what I understand. short brandable .coms are pretty hot now so if they fit in with that try brandbucket to see if they like them

Hi

i think you should re-read what @gilescoley said in first reply:

1st Rule Of Domaining
: Never use automated appraisal sites

then read all the domains wanted threads going back to 5 years
then read all the domains for sale threads going back 10 years

if you do that, you can get a grip without leaving the forum.

imo...
