Questions from a rookie

I just started into domaining this week and I have a couple of questions. :hi:

1. Is it a rare occurrence to buy a domain and sell in a couple of days? I have read a couple of people buying and selling in a couple of days but I did not know if it was something that happens often.

2. I am selling on Sedo. Is it best to leave the prices blank with the 'Make an Offer' button or is it better to have a price with the 'Make an Offer' button.


3. How accurate is Sedo on their 'Free price suggestion'? If they offer a range (Example: $1000-$2000) is that something I should go by?


4. Is there any steps to converting Unique views into 'Clicks'? I have a lot of views but 0 clicks.

5. Are buying misspelled domains good for resale?

Well, welcome to NamePros:hi: Good to start asking questions and educating yourself right from the start. Too many see money others make and just jump in without a real good idea how it's being done, and then complain why they blew pocketbooks. NamePros is the perfect place for you to learn anything you want about domaining. Read forums, ask questions, and then read more, then ask more. And, along the way, hopefully have some fun and enjoy what to many is a hobby, and some make into nice business:blink:

1. Is it a rare occurance to buy a domain and sell in a couple of days? I have read a couple of people buying and selling in a couple of days but I did not know if it was something that happens often.

Very rare, unless you do a lot (again, a lot) of small-quality domains that you flip fast for very little profit. Decent profits on any one domain, and again that is rare. I once got a domain for $60 through a service that catches them the second they expire and are "available" again (called "drop catching" - a competative part of domaining, I don't recommend you jump into till you learn a good bit more) - $60 was the minimum price for the service, but I didn't want to hand (personally) register it, because I figured alot of others would try for it the second it was free (luckily was wrong). Ended-up selling it a week later for a little over $5k after fees. BUT, that is the VERY RARE EXCEPTION to the rule. I just happened to research and knew a company had used that term a lot on their site, but had to use a variation for their own domain because it was already registered. Basically went and sold them their own term (careful...trademark wasn't granted). Like said, those RARE (even making a decent % profit in a few days, much less a return like that if it ever happens)..So don't count on fast turn arounds. Most would advise you to save money, and as I stated, read...read..ask..ask..then find a niche` (specialty type of domains), go after those, and develop sites for them(at least partially),then work on seeing if you can sell them.

Setting a set-price tends to do better, because otherwise you end-up with one of two things: 1) A lot of offers way below what the domain is worth (called "low ball" offers)..or..2) You don't get many offers, because legit buyers might be afraid you'd want too much for the domain.

We have a section (http://www.namepros.com/domain-appraisals/) where other NamePros members will help you evaluate/appraise domains you own (don't post those you don't, especially if not registered, because someone might "snitch it from under you"). Why pay a service for what you can get for free from other domainers?:blink:As to Sedo's 'Free price suggestion', it is one of the better "automated" appraisal systems (they have the sales data to make it that way, as more sells through them than anywhere), but it is just that - an "automated system". Humans do alot better. And, in the end, domains (like a lot of things) are subjective. What a lot may not buy or find worth much, some may vary on opinion of. A domain is worth what the highest buyer will pay for it - and like love of another person, love of a domain is the same, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder (or, in the case of domains, the pocketbook of the buyer:P )

4. Is there any steps to converting Unique views into 'Clicks'? I have a lot of views but 0 clicks.

-- PPC (pay-per-click) and domain-parking are not my thing...I'll let others answer that one

5. Are buying misspelled domains good for resale?

-- Not my specialty either..Not something I ever figured how others did well at, but I know some do..I'll let them jump in on that one:blink:

1. not rare, but maybe just not reported as often.

about a month ago, a fellow domainer posted some "available to register" domains on a forum.
i scanned the list and registered one of the domains, then sold it the next day for small profit.

others may get a domain one day and sell the next week or month later.
though sometimes selling too quickly can leave regrets.

2. i tend to leave at make offer, though i have some listed with fixed price. others are listed as make offer, but i set a minimum.

i've sold domains on sedo that had "make offers" and with a "fixed price". but your negotiation skills will help or hinder you in getting the best roi.

3. i haven't use that to gage value for any of my domains

4. set your portfolio to "auto-optimize", but if you have poor keyworded domains, you may never get any clicks.

5. back in the day, i sold quite a few misspells, but many domainers now chase them for parking revenue, rather than to resell.

though if the parking rev is good, it can help should one choose to offer for sale.

there is big difference between tm typos and generic typos.
