I know a guy who publishes a local print directory. The name of his directory is "Eagle Rock York Valley". He just recently told me he made a website. So I asked him is it EagleRockYorkValley.com ? And he says oh no that is too long. He chose another name that is different. So do you think a domain name can be too long?

if your gunning for the term "Eagle Rock York Valley" then EagleRockYorkValley.com would be a good choice. Too long would be TheBestEagleRockYorkValley.com lol

12 letters the most or acrynom is best. He could've use his original but he may wanted to be more discriptive in his business. Something like EagleRockMovers(dot)com or something of that nature.

that name is a bit long. Try to type it fast and you will likely make at least one error.

It can be no longer then 63 characters. Other thing: how do you think such domain name can be memorable?

Four words would definitely be pushing it. I'd argue anything around 20 letters is also pushing it.

On the other hand, the length of the full URL doesn't mean much to end users, because they're going to come to you mostly by way of search engine and bookmarks. You'd be shocked how many end users never type anything into the address bar. For that matter, you'd be shocked how many end users are unaaware of what the address bar is.

If you think a domain is the best to SEO for what you're doing, don't get too worked up about it.

SEO is more important than the domain lenght, you can find a website in the top 10 results even if the domain doesn't match with the contents, or if it's too long, or if it's a nosense acronym.

But it has value if your company works mostly on the web. For local companies, the domain should be short and memorable, strictly related to the company name and/or activity.

I do not like long domain name. It does not matter what is your domain name but if you do proper SEO then you can achieve good ranking. People can easily remember the short domain name.

I would definitely get the long one if that's the known market name. No reason they can't BOTH be utilized.

If he has a specifc niche and location of an actual business then i dont think its long. It might actaully help him with SE's. Now if you were to buy a generic long domain, then i wouldnt recommend anything more than say, 10 letters

For his specific purpose I think it's a reasonable domain.

When buying a house, people keep telling you "location, location and location". You may try to find thousand reason you should buy some cheap houses at undesirable locations and learn the lessons yourself. The same reason someone with experience at virtual property would tell you to buy a "good" domain to develop.

That's a business not a house.

And for some businesses like a pig farm the location requirements are going to be greatly different.

He probably meant the name is too long to type and too long to remember IMO. I wouldn't use that domain name either lol.

Best "rule of thumb" for most domain-related issues is common sense. Longer domain names are fine if they make sense.

If that's the name of his publication, that's how people familiar with it will try to find it online. Depending on the domain he chose, a shorter name could actually make it harder for people to initially find the site. The shorter name would need to be something intuitive ... like EagleRock[something].
