============

In keeping with the spirit of IconPack's 150 Domaining Tips thread, I thought I'd make a thread where everyone can post their biggest pet peeves and annoyances with newbies. That way, new members can learn what not to do, or can at least be sent to this thread if they do something annoying.

Rules:
  • Keep it short.
  • Keep it NamePros forum specific.
  • Be nice. This isn't a thread to bash new members, it's a place to post advice.
  • Try not to duplicate other people's posts.

I'll start:

My biggest pet peeves are:

1) When someone argues with people replying to their appraisal request.
2) Misleading or ambiguous (vague) thread titles.
3) People begging for reputation points.

25) Thinking that PR will increase the value of a domain, where as when its bought and the content changes, the PR will be gone in days.

26) When a newb registers domains they see sell on afternic or sedo but they replace the o with a 0. i.e. reportspot.com -> rep0rtsp0t.com

27) When a newb registers 4 word domain names

28) When a newb thinks an ovt score without extension below 1000 is something important

29) When a newb posts in the "wanted" section a domain totally unrelated to what the buyer is asking

30) When a newbie thinks they know what they're talking about, when really they don't.

31) When they think there domains is worth thousands when in reality it's just junk.

32) When a newb posts an irrelevant reply.

33) When the only posts in a sales thread with 30 replies are from the thread starter and they all say, "Bump."

34) When someone replies to an appraisal of their names with "Oh wow, do you want to buy my name for xxx?"

Along the lines of 29)

35) When someone asks people to send PMs in the Domains Wanted section and people insist on posting their names.

36) When people crash other people's threads.

Example: "I don't know how much your name is worth, but I own domainnamesforsells.com, will people please valuate my name?"

 Maybe I should've made a minimum posts requirement.

37. Asking busy people about stuff via PM.
38. Requesting for free domain names
39. Posting low-ball offers on sedo, or bidding too high.

40. Post .info, .crap or .whatever domains in 'Domains wanted' section when it was clearly stated "ONLY com !" :|

40. Not checking the authoritative whois DB on newly registered domain names to confirm your ownership

Why you should do that:
Some registrars have glitches in their systems and will incorrectly report domains as successfully registered when they are not :!: So you get the confirmation E-mail and believe you've got the name, fine but the domain has NOT been registered actually.
It happened to me with 2 different registrars.

41. When a n00b places their backups in the dame directory as their main content, so when their main content gets deleted, their backups do too.
42. When n00bs dont back up at all, and their host dies. (Myself? 2 times. Google cache owns)

18) PM'ing everyone on the members list with your
[cough] "premium" domains or services, like WE were new!

I am bumping this one, since I will soon be sending a member here and I would like to make sure they get the point. When I say "Please do not send me any more sales offers via PM," I don't mean, "Please wait 3 weeks before spamming me again."

Next Number is 43)

8). using leapfish.com as an appraisal service, and comming on the forum talking about your 50k$ domain, but willing to sell it right now for $1k. [or actually believing the appraisal to being with!]
Mine is kind of similiar to that one except,

43) Uses leapfish.com as an appraisal service, and wants to sell at the price that is shown at leapfish.com (the $XXXX+ ones) :lala:

*actually experienced it* :!:

44) Still trying to backorder domains through Godaddy.

45) Trying to buy a domain for a "client" for $35 or less

46) Don't know what the abbreviations DNF or DS stands for

47) They own a hosting company, on which their user name is based.
48) Their hosting is "very stable, high speed, and has hundreds of clients"
49) They lie about their age
50) They say they "forgot" something, when in fact they didn't know it in the first place.
51) They lie on their whois information, and when asked what their name is on a non-domain related subject, it's totally different than on a domain related subject.

37) When you give up dashes just because someone said your domain will not have ANY value.

www.United-Americans.com (domain being auctioned as a fund raiser for our linguistic project) and www.best-e.biz might prove you wrong - how stupid would beste.biz look without a dash?

WWW.TONGUE-SWAP.ORG - It's not what you think!
We like dashes...

52. When you don't take the time to read the original posts and responses before posting something pretty irrellevant (like posting point 37 after point 51)

29) When a newb posts in the "wanted" section a domain totally unrelated to what the buyer is asking

I just found this thread and this was going to be what I would have posted. It's one thing to post something that's JUST outside of what someone was looking for, especially if it's a good name. But someone looking for something "short, made-up, brandable" is NOT looking for some 20 letter 3-word domain!

53) Posting in the Domain Wanted section and asking for three letter domains, but only offering 50% (or less) than current (wholesale) market pricing.

54) Replying to a thread in the Legal Issues area of the forum when the person has no legal experience or insight.

55) Posting large numbers of domains in the Domain Appraisal area.

9) When you fall for the appraisal scam

What is an appraisal scam? To elaborate, an appraisal scam is when a scammer "agrees" to buy one of your domains only if you (the seller) purchase a domain appraisal from a specific company they "recommend". This is to con you into paying for the appraisal. They could be pulling off the scam in tandem with that appraisal company, or the so-called company could be their own. If the specific company that they demand a appraisal from is not one of the larger companies (e.g. Sedo), then it is very likely a scam.

17) Making an offer in the Fixed Price forum, especially when the listing says "firm" or "no offers".

Not exactly true. I do it all the time. And I am surprised myself sometimes how one person's domain ends up selling for half the firm price. It's negotiation. The name of the entire game!

But I have a few of my own to add:

56) Asking what registrar the domain is registered in (which probably takes longer to post than quickly checking via whois.sc!)

57) Asking if their *keyword*-*keyword*.us domain is valuable because *keyword* *keyword* has like an overture of 50,000.

58) Overvalue their own domains, but undervalue others.

Here's a few others I got that somebody else posted elsewhere. This is what a newb would say:

59) Which parking company pays most/Is best ?

60) Which registrar is cheapest

61) Please appraise &#$@domain.$&#@extension (i.e. brandname.name)

62) How to find domains with traffic ?

63) Sedo/Trafficz/Domainsponsor/Fabulous is worst/best, because...

64) (some crappy words).mobi for sale only $999 time limited offer

65) I registered 200 random domains, parked it at xxx but it does not make any money - why ?

66) .mobi's/IDNs - rocks/sucks (1000 post long flamewars)

67) Domain liquidation (list of x00 crappy domains with $0 value)

68)
i received my ND payment today - thank you ED

thanks ED

thank you very much ED

thank you very many Eddie

love you Ed, just received my payment

ED ur the best, received my money
